Polo & Virtus now available with beats Audio package in Brazil

August 14, 2018 0

Turn up the volume: here come the New Polo and Virtus equipped with the Beats premium sound system

It sounds better than good: Volkswagen shows its musical side. Beginning this month, the New Polo and the Virtus can be equipped with the Beats premium sound system. The novelty, which is already arriving at the dealerships for the Comfortline and Highline versions, carries all the technology of one of the most reputable brands of the professional audio market, as well as exclusive visual items.

The Beats package was developed jointly with the BeatsAudio sound specialists. Its premium sound system has 300 watts and 8-channel digital amplifier. The high-fidelity sound is provided by four loudspeakers, two tweeters and one subwoofer with special adjusts.

The New Polo Beats and Virtus Beats arrive as part of the 2019 lineup, aligned with the Beats brand proposition, targeting the public of aspirational customers, mostly young, who does not give up  status and look always for products that are a reference in the technology market. These are the first Volkswagen models to offer the sound premium brand in the national  market.

Both are equipped exclusively with the 200TSI engine, with up to 128 cv and automatic six-speed transmission. The Beats lineup will be available in four different body colors (Sirius Silver, Platinum Gray, Crystal White and Ninja Black) with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Sound and visual exclusivity

The Beats lineup adds up a series of exclusive items for the Comfortline and Highline versions of the New Polo and Virtus. Externally, the New Polo equipped with the Beats sound system shows the version badge on the front fenders and has the mirrors painted in Tornado Red - in all body colors.

Internally, the highlight is the New Polo Beats dashboard finish, with the same color (Tornado Red) of the external rear view mirrors. Also red are the seats stitches and the front floor mats.  The exclusive door sills complete the set. The Virtus and New Polo equipped with the Beats package exhibit the sound brand logo in the A pillar (close to the windscreen), right over the tweeters.

Global success

The New Polo and Virtus are global products that arrived in the national market offering new references in style, technology and handling. The New Polo, for instance, has an exclusive design, different from other markets, inspired in polls consulting Brazilian customers and focusing on the regionalization of Volkswagen products. The result is an exclusive style, with strong character lines.  The Virtus, by its side, had its world debut in Brazil, and is already obtaining success in other markets.

The Comfortline and Highline versions of the New Polo and the Virtus are offered exclusively with the 200 TSI engine, with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission allows manual Tiptronic sequential changes, operated through the gear level or the shift paddles at the steering wheel.  The driver counts also with the sport mode option (position 'S'), which changes the gear change moment to higher engine speeds, providing a faster acceleration, for an even more dynamic vehicle behavior.

With three cylinders and displacement of 999 cm³, the 200 TSI is part of the EA211 family - which is characterized also by the modularity. A Total Flex, this engine is able to ride on gasoline, ethanol or a mix of both fuels in any proportion.  This engines maximum output is 128 cv (94 kW) using ethanol and 115 cv (85 kW) with gasoline at 5,500 rpm, with a 200 Nm maximum torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm, both with gasoline or ethanol.

Excellent cost-benefit ratio

All New Polo and Virtus versions carry standard electric-assisted steering, air-conditioned, power windows in the four doors (the front windows with 'one touch' function for closing and opening), electric lock, dual parabolic headlights and folding key with remote control.

The Comfortline version is equipped with split folding rear seat, adjustable steering column (height and distance), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), fog lights with 'cornering lights', Composition Touch infotainment system with 6.5" touch screen, 15" light alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, power external mirrors, front arm rest with object holder, darkened rear lights and multifunctional steering wheel, among other items.

The Highline version adds to the Comfortline option the "Kessy" keyless door-opening system and engine starting through a button in the central console, cruise control, 'Climatronic' air-conditioning, folding front-passenger seat and two USB ports for charging, cooled glove compartment, fog lights with static 'cornering lights', LED daylight running lights (DRL), 16" light alloy wheels, floor mats and leather covered multifunctional steering wheel with shift paddles and glossy black fittings in the cabin.

Among the benefits of the MQB Modular Strategy is the possibility of adopting luxury-class technologies in large-scale models. Thus, the New Polo and the Virtus can offer in the Highline version the second generation of the Active Info Display, the Discover Media system with 8-inch touchscreen and smartphone appearance, as well as two 2-ampere USB ports, among other items. Only the lights/icons in the display’s lower edge are installed as hardware. Navigation information can be displayed in 2D or 3D on a 10.25-inch screen, the size of a tablet. Its 1,440 x 540 pixels resolution allows showing extremely precise and high-quality graphics. The navigation mode, for instance: in this case, the speedometer and tachometer are displaced to the sides to create more space for the map.

Maximum gradings in security

All New Polo and Virtus versions are equipped with four airbags - two frontal and two lateral. Also part of the standard items list, the ISOFIX ® and top-tether systems provide more safety and easy-fixing for child seats.

The Volkswagen New Polo and the Virtus achieved the maximum classification in the tests performed by Latin NCAP, which evaluates new cars sold in Latin America and Caribbean. This way, both models figure among the safest automobiles sold in Brazil, with five stars for adult and child protection. The Latin NCAP tests include an analysis of frontal impact - at 64 km/h against a deformable small overlap barrier (40%) -, side impact (against a deformable barrier mounted on a trolley crashing at 50 km/h against the vehicle) and side impact against a pole - the vehicle is launched sideways at 29 km/h into a pole. The child's protection classification is performed through the evaluation of the dynamic behavior of the children retention systems (child seats) in frontal and side tests, as well as the safety and practicability of installation for these dispositives.

The Latin NCAP has also granted the New Polo and Virtus the Advanced Award, conceded to vehicles that comply with pedestrian protection criteria - the Volkswagen's models were the first vehicles sold in Brazil to receive this prize. The evaluation is based on tests simulating accident situations involving pedestrians, according to standards established by European legislation.

Lowest repairability indexes

Volkswagen is the brand with the best repairability indexes in the country, according to the Car Group 2018 ranking of CESVI Brasil (Centro de Experimentação e Segurança Viária - Experimentation and Road Safety Center). The New Polo and Virtus show this: both have the best repairability index among all participating vehicles, with grade 10, the same obtained by the up! and cross up!.

The lower the grade (in a scale going from 10 to 60), the better will be the vehicle's repair time and cost. Therefore, the New Polo keeps not only the best classification in its category, but also among all vehicles from different segments evaluated by CESVI Brasil (as at June 2018).

The new T-Cross – “more than one thing”

July 03, 2018 0

  • T-Cross will expand the SUV program underneath the T-Roc
  • Innovative spacious passenger compartment offers maximum flexibility
  • Thanks to MQB: A range of assistance systems available in higher vehicle classes to enter the small vehicle segment

The T-Cross1 is set to launch a new form of SUV from the Volkswagen brand. Presented in 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show as a much-anticipated study, the series version is now making its way in the direction of actual production. With the T-Cross, Volkswagen is expanding the spectrum of Sport Utility Vehicles to include a small model. “I am more than one thing” – that is the claim with the introduction of the T-Cross. “More” is thus to be understood as a program: offering more, but nevertheless not costing more. The world première of the new T-Cross will take place in the autumn. Until then, Volkswagen will shorten the waiting time with a first look at the future SUV in the small vehicle class.

T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg will now be the five SUV formats of the brand in Europe. But, the new T-Cross will enrich the SUV range in China and South America, as well. The 4,107-mm-long Volkswagen is designed with charisma, always front-driven, functionally conceptualised, and cleverly constructed. At home in the city, and ready for the small and large adventures both inside and outside the urban jungle.

The modular transverse matrix (MQB) creates a surprising amount of room. For example, the back seat can be adjusted lengthwise – for more knee room or more room for luggage. The positive influence of the modular transverse matrix affects all areas. Thus, the T-Cross is entering the market as one of the safest vehicles of its class, guaranteed through excellent crash properties and a large spectrum of assistance systems. Standard on board: the “Front Assist” (ambient traffic monitoring system) and “Lane Assist” (lane departure warning system). “I am more than one thing” – the new T-Cross.

Volkswagen T-Cross - Spied Testing in Sweden

December 16, 2017 0

The all new MQB A0 SUV to be called the T-Cross has been spied testing in Sweden undergoing cold weather evaluation.

From what auto media are reporting, we can gather that the T-Cross will share the same wheelbase as its closely related sibling the SEAT Arona of 2566mm and drivetrain range. With the engine range similar to Polo, from the 3 cylinder 1.0L MPI to the 4 cylinder 1.5L evo TSI petrol engines and diesels 1.6L TDI in various horsepower guises.

The T-Cross much like the concept and SEAT Arona may only be available in front wheel drive format only. Time will tell as to whether other markets adapt Haldex 4Motion into the T-Cross like some rivals do in this class.

Expect all the usual Volkswagen Group technologies - Blind Spot Detection, Front Assist with Active Cruise Control, Rear Traffic Alert, Multi-Collision Brake, beats Audio, Volkswagen's Modular Infotainment System and much more.

T-Cross will be manufactured for Europe and ROW markets in the Pamplona plant in Spain along side the Polo. Brazil (for South America) and China will build and develop their own versions for their respective markets.

T-Cross may be revealed as early as March at the Geneva Motor Show or later in the year (September) at Paris Motor Show.

Volkswagen's strategic realignment is delivering

November 30, 2017 0

  • Brand gives positive interim assessment after one year of "TRANSFORM 2025+"
  • Successful start to largest model offensive in the history of Volkswagen
  • Improvement in competitiveness and financial figures
  • Target corridor of 4.0 – 5.0 percent defined for return on sales in 2020
  • Brand CEO Diess: "We have taken the first step - but we still face tremendous challenges."

Dr. Arno Antlitz, Member of the Board of the Volkswagen brand responsible for Finance, brand CEO Dr. Herbert Diess, Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the board responsible for Sales and Marketing.
The Volkswagen brand is moving ahead with the transformation initiated under its TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy a year ago. Implementation is running at full speed and the core brand of the Volkswagen Group has made progress in all the key action areas over the past 12 months.

"We have initiated the fundamental realignment of the brand with our strategy. This is the milestone plan which Volkswagen will use to steer through the extremely demanding phase in our industry which is ahead of us. Our goal is to make Volkswagen the world's leading volume manufacturer and to ensure that we make optimum preparations for the future of the automobile," said Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.

Thanks to the successful SUV offensive among other factors, the brand is back on track for growth and is heading for a sales record in 2017. In line with its goals, the brand is increasingly regaining the lead in the volume segment. At the same time, Volkswagen is consistently forging ahead with the expansion of e-mobility and the sustained transformation of its powertrain portfolio.

The fact that the realignment is taking effect is also confirmed by the profitability of the brand. For 2017 as a whole, Volkswagen expects an operating return on sales slightly above the original target corridor of 2.5 to 3.5 percent. This year, the brand is therefore already approaching the target of about 4.0 percent set for 2020. On this basis, the Volkswagen brand has defined a target corridor for 2020 of an operating return on sales between 4.0 percent and 5.0 percent.

Implementation of TRANSFORM 2025+ successfully started

In November 2016, Volkswagen had initiated the fundamental strategic realignment of its core brand with the TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy. In the first phase, up to 2020, core business is to be strengthened and the brand is to be positioned as a leading, profitable volume manufacturer before taking the lead in e-mobility. In this first phase, the brand is pursuing five key action areas.

SUV offensive taking effect

In the course of the model offensive, Volkswagen has been able to significantly increase the number of vehicles delivered in the course of the year. In October, Volkswagen set a new record for monthly deliveries, with a total of 550,900 vehicles handed over to customers throughout the world. After 10 months, deliveries have reached a cumulative figure of 5.04 million vehicles, which is more than 3 percent above the prior-year period – and sales have recently gained momentum. For the year as a whole, the brand expects to set a new sales record.

This year, Volkswagen will have launched 10 new models, including five entirely new models without predecessors. The main focus of the model offensive is on the SUV segment, with new models including the Tiguan Allspace, Atlas and T-Roc. By 2020, Volkswagen intends to expand its global SUV range to 20 models. By then, about 40 percent of the Volkswagens sold are to be SUVs.

Brand positioning strengthened

With its model offensive, the brand is pursuing the goal of positioning itself as the most attractive volume brand in all major regions of the world by 2020. In order to achieve this objective, Volkswagen has strengthened the organization of the major regions and given them greater responsibility in the course of its regionalization strategy; this also applies to the product portfolio. The new Volkswagen models are tailored to meet the wishes of customers in the regions even more closely. The regions throughout the world are linked by the brand's claim to a leading position for quality and technology in the volume segment.

"Volkswagen is back on the offensive in all its core markets. We have achieved a turnaround with attractive models and are winning market shares," said Jürgen Stackmann, Board Member of the brand responsible for Sales. "And we have only just started with our model offensive. Our product pipeline for the next few years is jam-packed – with many more strong vehicles precisely tailored to specific preferences in the various regions."

Turnaround initiated in regions

On the key US market, Volkswagen is pursuing the goal of becoming a relevant volume brand. In North America alone, four new SUVs are planned by 2020. In South America, Volkswagen has renewed its model range and aims to regain market leadership, e.g. with the Virtus model which was recently presented. In China, the brand intends to safeguard its position as a market leader with more than 10 new SUVs up to 2020 and to assume a leading position in the key global market for e-mobility. For this purpose, Volkswagen will be launching more than 10 new electric models in China by 2020.

The first positive impact of the realignment in the regions is already evident in the sales figures. For example, deliveries to customers in China rose by about 4 percent in January to October compared with the corresponding prior-year period. In the USA, the rise was almost 10 percent and in Brazil more than 20 percent. In Russia, the brand already reached the financial break-even point, with growth of 17 percent in deliveries – significantly earlier than planned.

Improved competitiveness

Despite its worldwide model offensive and the associated expansion of the product range, Volkswagen has succeeded in keeping overall fixed costs stable.

The pact for the future agreed a year ago is contributing to improved competitiveness. The pact provides for savings and efficiency improvements in all areas and at all locations with a positive impact on the result of €3.7 billion per year by 2020, including €3.0 billion in Germany. Since the pact was launched a year ago, improvements totaling €1.9 billion have already been achieved. Other specific measures are currently being implemented.

The pact for the future also provides for the socially compatible loss of 23,000 jobs by 2020 in Germany – at the same time as the creation of 9,000 jobs in future-oriented areas. Here too, Volkswagen is making progress. In 2017, 3,800 jobs have been cut to date. 2,000 of these job losses have compensated for by expected recruitment of apprentices upon the completion of their training and approved structural changes. In total, about 1,800 jobs have therefore been lost in 2017. The total target of 9,200 partial early retirement contracts signed, which are to take effect step-by-step up to 2020, will probably be reached by the end of the year.

To a large extent, the agreed targets for productivity improvements at the German plants have also been reached. The Wolfsburg (Tiguan and Touran), Salzgitter and Kassel plants have already made improvements above the target of 7.5 percent set for 2017. Productivity improvements at the Wolfsburg (Golf), Emden, Zwickau and Brunswick plants are still slightly below this figure.

Board Member for Finance Arno Antlitz said: "With our TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy and the pact for the future as a key element, we have already strengthened the earnings power of the Volkswagen brand over the past 12 months. We will pursue this path consistently with a view to expanding and sustainably safeguarding our return, even though the cost of meeting more stringent CO2 targets and expenditure for future-oriented investments will grow considerably over the next few years."

In Europe, a CO2 target of 95 grams per kilometer has been set for 2020. After 2020, the requirements will become even more stringent. The EU plans a voluntary electric car quota of 15% for 2025 and there will be new, demanding targets for fleet emissions. This means that e-mobility will become the key factor in meeting statutory requirements and mastering the associated financial challenges. It will be crucial to create a financial basis for shouldering the tasks ahead of us – and shaping e-mobility in a profitable way.

Development of new skills

In order to safeguard its future viability, Volkswagen is developing new skills – especially in the fields of digitalization and e-mobility. All in all, 9,000 new jobs in future-oriented areas are to be created over the next few years. In addition, comprehensive training programs have started to prepare the workforce for the upcoming challenges.

Volkswagen is also expanding the direct contact with customers which is necessary for a continuous digital customer experience. The Future Sales Model defines cooperation with dealers throughout the world and lays the organizational foundation for the mobility services of the future.

Only a few days ago, Volkswagen reached a milestone in the digitalization of the brand in Germany: the new customer portal "Volkswagen We" is available with immediate effect. Among other functions, this allows customers to book servicing appointments directly using a smart phone for the first time. The platform gives Volkswagen the possibility of maintaining continuous direct contact with customers and offering them personalized content and convenient services.

Outlook: acceleration of realignment

Up to 2020, Volkswagen will be launching more than 10 new models per year, including many SUVs. At the same time, the brand will continue to step up its efforts to make determined progress with the key future topics of the automotive world. This applies not only to e-mobility but also to digitalization and autonomous driving.

In order to accelerate the strategic realignment, Volkswagen recently adapted its investment plans to the TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy. Over the next five years, the brand will be investing about €4 billion in the new MEB electric architecture at its plants around the world. An additional amount of about €2 billion is to be invested in development. The Zwickau plant is to be developed into the largest European e-mobility center. Initially, the series production of all vehicles based on the new modular electric drive kit (MEB) will be concentrated at the plant. The first vehicle in the new generation of electric cars is to be the I.D.*, which will be launched in 2020.

The foundations for these developments will already be laid in 2018. The technical architecture of the MEB is to be finalized and preparations are to be made for production. Preparations are also to start for the production of the I.D. and market introduction will be planned. Next year, contracts for the supply of key components for the I.D. Crozz* will also be awarded, with series production due to start in 2020.

"The Volkswagen brand has started with the successful implementation of its TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy – the strategic realignment is delivering and we have taken the first step. But this is only the beginning. We have completed the first five kilometers of a marathon. And are all aware of the challenges that lie ahead of us. This is why we will accelerate the realignment of Volkswagen, continue our worldwide model and electric offensive and work hard on our costs," said brand CEO Diess.

Volkswagen Virtus - Full Press Release

November 17, 2017 0

New sedan offers the latest in design, innovation, interior space and high performance in the premium sedan segment

  • Virtus debuts global style language of the Volkswagen brand for new sedans
  • Virtus will be the first car in Latin America to use artificial intelligence to help drivers
  • With an average sedan size and one of the largest trunk of the category, Virtus was developed with a focus on Latin America
  • Modular Strategy MQB offers unprecedented features in the segment, such as Active Info Display digital panel, 8-inch Discover Media infotainment system and 3 USB inputs
  • 128-hp TSI engine and 200 Nm of torque and automatic transmission combine low fuel consumption and high performance; Virtus makes 0 to 100 km / h in less than 10 seconds
  • Virtus arrives at Brazilian dealerships in January 2018

São Bernardo do Campo - Volkswagen presents Virtus, a global car, unprecedented and arriving with new interpretations in style, innovation, high performance and safety. First sedan built on the MQB Modular Strategy in the Country, the model arrives in the Brazilian market in January 2018 with new design references, use of space and comfort in the category of premium sedans. In addition, the model will be the first car in Latin America to use artificial intelligence to help drivers on a daily basis.

"We are advancing rapidly in our product offensive with the revelation of the Virtus sedan just 60 days after the launch of the Novo Polo. It is another step towards gaining a relevant position in the Latin America region. Virtus is already born with the stamp of innovation: it is a pioneer in the use of artificial intelligence, to help the owner to better know and enjoy Virtus in daily use, "says Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen South America and Brazil .

Virtus has trim levels that follow the most stringent quality standards of Volkswagen sedans in the world. It will have engine and transmission options that will be offered according to the particularities of each market. In Brazil, the main highlight for the Virtus will be the mechanical assembly of the TSI engine up to 128 hp and six-speed automatic transmission.

Strong design from all angles

Virtus brings the unique visual language, developed based on customer research and focused on the regionalization of Volkswagen products. It has its own personality - following the shape and function of a sedan - and presents an unprecedented style. The result is a dynamic design, with fast lines - especially in the "C" column (after the rear doors) and connected, giving the sedan a very elongated silhouette, thanks to the flexibility of the MQB Modular Strategy.

FrontThe highlight of the front is the crease that edges the air intake and cuts the space between the main optical assembly and the fog lights. In Virtus, the large surfaces of the fog lights and direction indicators draw attention to the side of the car. They end at angles with three-dimensional contours. Between them are two air intakes: one in the shape of a "V" in the middle and a second narrow inlet that extends across the entire width. The result is that the Virtus visually has a very wide "mouth" thanks to the contour of the lower bumper grid.

SideThe Virtus adopts the double arrow line on the side. From the "B" (that between the doors) back, the model brings even more elongated and fluid traits. At 4.48 meters in length, Virtus is one of the largest of its direct competitors. As a basis for comparison, it is 42.5 inches longer than the New Polo, also developed on the MQB Modular Strategy. This completely changes the perspective of the side of the vehicle.

Rear with double lanterns and striking visual identityVirtus brings big flashlights. They connect the mudguards with the trunk lid and have a reverse angle, similar to the Jetta. Another highlight is the baffle in the upper region of the lid, evidencing the sporty look. The board sits well in the center of the trunk lid, between the lanterns, creating a harmonious layout. The bumper features a one frame at the bottom, which runs across the rear.

Large interior and excellent use of space

Reference in the segment, the wheelbase in the Virtus is 2.65 meters (exactly the same as the current Jetta), that is: 8.5 cm more than the Novo Polo (which already has one of the largest cabins of the segment). With this, the Virtus establishes a new reference in comfort and use of space in its category. One more benefit of the flexibility of the MQB Modular Strategy. The height of the Virtus is 1,468 millimeters (4 mm more than that of the Novo Polo) and the width is the same: 1,751 mm.

With enough space to accommodate three adults in the back with comfort worthy of the best mid-size sedans, the Virtus has board access facilitated by the wide opening angle of the rear doors, which are larger than the Novo Polo's.

More than the capacity to accommodate five adults, the Volkswagen sedan can carry large objects. Not for less: there are 521 liters capacity in the trunk, one of the largest in the category and enough to store a large amount of luggage.

Panel focusing on technology and connectivity

The focus of cab development has been on the continued growth of dial-up scanning as well as connectivity. With horizontal orientation, the panel promotes interaction between the all-digital Active Info Display panel and infotainment systems.

With this, Virtus brings the second generation of Active Info Display (feature unprecedented in this category), Discover Media system with 8-inch touch screen and smartphone appearance, plus three USB inputs, among other items. Discover Media enables the mirroring of smartphones through the Mirrorlink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto platforms. In the Active Info Display, instruments are implemented virtually via software. Navigation information can be displayed in 2D or 3D on a 10.25-inch screen, the size of a tablet, with extremely accurate and high-quality graphics.

Exemplary handling and excellent performance

Virtus suspension set-up contributes to excellent handling and comfort in road conditions on the streets and roads of Latin America. Depending on the market, the Virtus can be equipped with 200 TSI engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission offers the Tiptronic sequential manual shift option, operated via the shift lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The maximum power of this engine is 128 hp (94 kW) with ethanol and 115 hp (85 kW) with gasoline at 5,500 rpm, with a maximum torque of 200 Nm (20.4 kgfm), with gasoline or ethanol, from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. Equipped with this engine, the Virtus accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.9 seconds and reaches top speed of 194 km / h (data with ethanol).

Safety Reference

With the MQB Modular Strategy, Volkswagen manages to reduce the total weight of the vehicle while building Virtus so that it is one of the safest models in its segment. Most of Virtus' body structure is made up of special high and ultra high strength steels with hot shaped parts.

When equipped with the 200 TSI engine, the Virtus is fitted as standard with ESC - Electronic Stability Control. This system recognizes an early stage of a critical shooting situation to happen. Compares the driver's commands with the reactions of the vehicle to this command. If necessary, the system reduces engine torque and brakes one or more wheels until it reaches the stability condition.

The ESC includes a number of other electronic assistance features: HHC (Hill Hold Control) or Ramp Start Assist Control, HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist System) or BAS, XDS + or Electronic Differential Lock, BSW (Bremsscheibewischer - RKA + (Monitoring of tire pressure), among others.

Cognitive Manual

Volkswagen Virtus will be Brazil's first automobile to bring unprecedented connectivity and scanning capabilities. The sedan will offer the "cognitive manual" - which uses IBM Watson to respond to drivers questions about the vehicle, including information contained in the car manual. This solution allows a new way of interacting with the vehicle and offers a new technological experience.

Any questions about the car can be answered by this smart assistant, simply and quickly. The My Volkswagen application has Watson technology to answer questions in Portuguese and Spanish.

Like Internet search engines, the Volkswagen app will have typing fields and a microphone so the user can ask their questions orally - the language can be natural, as in an informal conversation. The system recognizes accents and is able to learn the more you interact with it. It is a totally new and interactive way to launch Virtus, a model that will revolutionize the Brazilian market.

Volkswagen provides further impetus for South America strategy with compact model Virtus

November 16, 2017 0

World premiere in Sao Paulo: Virtus to regain market shares with innovative MQB technology

  • Superior package with generous space crossing segment boundaries, emotional design and the latest connectivity features
  • Largest Volkswagen model offensive in Brazil launched: 20 new models by 2020, investments of €1.8 billion
  • Board Member for Sales Stackmann: "The Virtus sets standards in innovation and technology."

The Volkswagen brand is setting a further milestone in its South America strategy. With the world premiere of the entirely newly developed compact sedan Virtus in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Volkswagen is forging ahead with the realignment of the brand in South America. The new model, developed especially for the South American market, offers the latest features based on innovative MQB technology and is among the most spacious cars in its segment.

The Virtus is part of the brand's largest model offensive in Brazil. By 2020, 20 new models are to be launched, of which 13 will be produced at Volkswagen's Brazilian plants. Volkswagen is extending its range in Brazil in key segments. For this purpose, the Group will be investing a total of about €1.8 billion in Brazil. Last week, the company already announced investments of about €560 million for a new SUV model in Argentina, which is to roll off the production lines from 2020.

"With our Transform 2025+ strategy, we have set ourselves a clear target: in all the key regions, Volkswagen intends to become the most attractive volume brand. The Virtus shows how we are reinforcing the positioning of the brand in the regions. The new Volkswagen models, which will be precisely tailored to customers' wishes, will be quality and technology leaders in the volume segment," said Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand responsible for Sales. "Over the next few years, we will be doing everything in our power to take Volkswagen back to the lead in the largest South American automobile market" added the Board Member for Sales.

With its Virtus compact sedan, Volkswagen is stepping up its product offensive on the growing Brazilian market. The fastback, with a length of 4.48 m, sets standards in its class in terms of technology, conductivity, comfort, spaciousness and performance. The Virtus is the first Volkswagen model and the first car in South America to feature assistance systems using artificial intelligence to support the driver. This web-based function is the first result of cooperation between Volkswagen and the IBM IT group.

The Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) also brings benefits in terms of interior design. With its wheelbase of 2.65 m, the Virtus offers space for five adults as well as one of the largest cargo spaces in its class, with a capacity of 521 liters.

"We are advancing in South America – and are renewing our model range in Brazil step-by-step. Following the presentation of the new Volkswagen Polo a few weeks ago, the Virtus is a further key element in our drive to take Volkswagen back to the lead in the region," said Pablo Di Si, President and CEO Volkswagen South America Region and Brazil, at the world premiere of the new model.
Following the Golf and the new Polo, the new Virtus is the third model in Volkswagen's Brazilian model offensive based on MQB technology. By 2020, they are to be followed by an entirely renewed pick-up model range and further locally produced SUV's. Volkswagen has invested about €660 million in the modernization of the Anchieta plant, about 20 km to the south of Sao Paulo, for the production of the Virtus and the Polo.

Within the framework of its Transform 2025+ strategy for the future, Volkswagen is taking action to successfully reposition its business on world markets. Increasingly, the brand is transferring to the regions responsibilities which have previously been exercised centrally from Wolfsburg. The regions hold comprehensive responsibility for the entire spectrum of business – up to and including decisions on the model range. In addition to South America, responsibilities are being transferred to North America, China and the sub-Saharan region in Africa.
