The new T-Cross – "I am cool": Volkswagen designers survey the world of compact SUVs

August 31, 2018 0

The countdown for the launch of the new T-Cross has started: The world première of the most compact Volkswagen SUV ever will be celebrated in autumn. The slogan "I am more" will accompany the launch in spring 2019.
It stands for the four property fields "I am practical", "I am cool", "I am intuitive" and "I am safe". With a trailer for "I am cool", Volkswagen is now showing how the T-Cross designers have surveyed the world again and developed a new, urban generation of the Sport Utility Vehicle.

Exterior example: the T-Cross has a deliberately charismatic and masculine design. The front end, with its bonnet and headlights integrated outside the wide radiator grille, is a dominant design feature. At the side, a sharply cut character line divides the areas. It forms a powerful shoulder section and merges into a new design element at the rear: the reflector strip running across and bordered by black trim.

Colour and trim example: two-colour dash pads link the fresh, sporty style of the interior and the twelve colours of the exterior. The new T-Cross will also be available in different bi-colour paintwork versions as an option when it is launched next year.

Interior example: at an early stage of development, the designers immersed themselves in the spacious interior – virtually using augmented reality. They tested the ergonomics as well as the ambience and experienced the T-Cross of tomorrow live today in order to perfect it further. At the same time, they got a feeling for what it will be like for the first customers when their songs from the smartphone media library or streaming services resound through the interior of the new SUV via the "beats" sound system.

World premiere: New Grand California debuts in two vehicle body versions at the Caravan Salon

August 25, 2018 0

  • Cutting edge Grand California campervan launches with fully fitted washroom and large rear sleeping area
  • Crafter-based Grand California market introduction in early 2019 with two wheelbase options
  • Grand California 600 with sideways-on rear bed and children's bed in the roof space
  • Grand California 680 with 80 centimetres longer wheelbase and lengthways rear double bed

Hannover, 23 August 2018 – The California family is growing: making its world premiere with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (24 August to 2 September 2018) is the Grand California. The campervan with a refreshingly clear design is based on the new Crafter. It will launch in two versions with different wheelbases. Ideal for families: the Grand California 600 – a 6-metre version with sleeping area in the back and an additional children's bed in the redesigned camper roof space. An even larger sleeping and storage space in the back is provided by the 6.8-metre long Grand California 680. Thought through down to the tiniest detail, the layout of the avant-garde interior of both versions also includes a fully fitted washroom, spacious kitchen and bright, modern living area.

The new Grand California will be in showrooms from early 2019, enriching the globetrotters' world through the addition of one of the most modern motorhomes of our time. For Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles it represents a further upgrade to the existing California range. For all customers who want to use a compact campervan not just for holidays but as their everyday vehicle too, the familiar Bulli based California remains the favourite. In the size category above this iconic camper, however, the Grand California opens up a new spectrum of possibilities. These will be available from a starting price of under €55,000 (Germany) for the Grand California 600 (130 kW front-wheel drive with 8-speed automatic transmission).

Euro 6 TDI, optional all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission

The new campervan is powered by four-cylinder turbo-diesel direct injection (TDI) engines. The most powerful version of the highly fuel efficient Euro 6 engines delivers 130 kW / 177 PS1; this TDI will launch with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In addition, the 177 PSTDI can be combined with (4MOTION) all-wheel drive, as an alternative to front-wheel drive.

Campervan interior with the feel of a luxury yacht

With the Crafter-based Grand California, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has once again come up with a contemporary, young and charismatically designed campervan. Incorporated into its development was the great experience accumulated over three decades of the Bulli being used as a camper. For example, the interior: it impresses with its clear styling, bright colour scheme and carefully thought-out details. This impression is reinforced by the white cabinets and the elegant floor covering in the style of a ship's wooden deck. The combination of modern, stylish interior design and bright colour scheme forms a central feature of the excellently equipped Grand California.

The Grand California is fitted with swivel seats at the front and a double bench seat in the living area. Families with small children will appreciate the ISOFIX anchor points in the rear bench seat. A large dining table provides ample room for four people to sit down to eat together. The kitchen fittings include a 70-litre pull-out fridge with freezer compartment, a twin-hob gas cooker and a sink. The work surface in the kitchen can be extended to the left and right.

A key feature of the Grand California that differentiates it from the California based on the T6 is the fully fitted washroom. In addition to toilet and shower, the room has a fold-away wash basin, shelves
with fixings for toiletries and a cabinet. The main and mirror lighting systems are in this case switched on automatically by a standard motion detector.

Further standard features of the Grand California include practical details such as an outside light above the sliding door and the connection for an outside shower (with adjustable water
temperature), including hose and shower head in the back. An electrically powered step, which moves out in front of the sliding door, makes getting in and out easier, while mosquito nets in the sliding door and prop-open camper windows are also part of the standard specification. The Grand California is fitted as standard with the Composition Audio radio system.

Six USB interfaces ensure that smart phones and tablets are always supplied with sufficient power. Electrical devices of every kind can be operated from a total of four 230-volt sockets. Diverse direct and indirect sources of light keep the interior well lit in the evening. Most of the key motorhome functions can be controlled via a digital central display in the living area.

Being offered as optional extras for the Grand California are features such as a roof-mounted air-conditioning unit (for use on camp sites), a solar panel system, a satellite dish, a Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth loudspeakers that can be directly used via smart phone. On request, a DC/AC converter ensures that 230-volt devices can be supplied with power, regardless of there being any external electricity supply. The classic camping specification can, if desired, be supplemented with details such as a large awning on the passenger side, two California folding camp chairs and a camping table for outdoor use.

The Grand California will be available with the Crafter's leading edge driver assistance systems. These include Hill Start Assist, Front Assist (with collision warning) including City Emergency Braking function, Lane Assist, Side Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, sensor-activated side protection, automatic Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, reversing camera and Trailer Assist.

Volkswagen confirms T-Roc Cabriolet as firms first SUV Cabriolet

February 23, 2018 0

Volkswagen brand's first SUV cabriolet: Supervisory Board confirms cabriolet version of T-Roc

  • SUV cabriolet to be produced at Osnabrück from 2020
  • Volkswagen to invest €80 million in production
  • Cabriolet success story at Osnabrück is continued
  • New model safeguards capacity utilization and employment

Green light for a new cabriolet based on the T-Roc: within the framework of its major model offensive, the Volkswagen brand is launching its first convertible SUV. The new model is to be produced from the first half of 2020. At its meeting held today, the Volkswagen Group Supervisory Board confirmed the investment of more than €80 million in the Osnabrück plant which is required for this purpose. With this decision, the brand will be continuing the cabriolet success story of the Osnabrück team and safeguarding employment at the plant.

Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, says: "Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand. The T-Roc is already setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range. I am especially pleased to note that we can count on the Osnabrück team's decades of experience with convertibles. The Osnabrück plant now has bright prospects for the future."

SUVs are currently making a key contribution to the growth of the Volkswagen Group's core brand. With 720,000 Tiguan vehicles delivered, this car is among the 10 best-selling models in the world and the top three SUV's. By 2020, the brand intends to expand its SUV range throughout the world to 20 models. By then, about 40 percent of the vehicles sold by Volkswagen are to be SUV's. With the new cabriolet based on the T-Roc, Volkswagen will further reinforce its presence in the compact SUV segment, one of the fastest-growing segments in global automobile markets.

The investment of more than €80 million in the production of the new cabriolet will allow the comprehensive modernization of production technology, assembly and logistics at the Osnabrück plant. Following the run-up phase, a production volume of up to 20,000 vehicles per year is planned.

With the new cabriolet based on the T-Roc, Volkswagen is bringing this body style into the currently particularly strong growing SUV segment. This model continues Volkswagen's cabriolet tradition, which dates back almost 70 years. The original version of the T-Roc was successfully launched on European markets at the end of 2017. To date, more than 40,000 orders have been taken for the model.

Volkswagen Osnabr GmbH currently has about 2,300 employees. In 2017, the plant assembled more than 76,000 units on three production lines. Currently, Volkswagen Osnabrück assembles the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Porsche Cayman. In addition, the plant is responsible for part of the painting work needed for the ŠKODA Fabia. Since Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH was founded in 2011, more than 280,000 vehicles have rolled off the assembly lines.

Volkswagen T-Cross - Spied Testing in Sweden

December 16, 2017 0

The all new MQB A0 SUV to be called the T-Cross has been spied testing in Sweden undergoing cold weather evaluation.

From what auto media are reporting, we can gather that the T-Cross will share the same wheelbase as its closely related sibling the SEAT Arona of 2566mm and drivetrain range. With the engine range similar to Polo, from the 3 cylinder 1.0L MPI to the 4 cylinder 1.5L evo TSI petrol engines and diesels 1.6L TDI in various horsepower guises.

The T-Cross much like the concept and SEAT Arona may only be available in front wheel drive format only. Time will tell as to whether other markets adapt Haldex 4Motion into the T-Cross like some rivals do in this class.

Expect all the usual Volkswagen Group technologies - Blind Spot Detection, Front Assist with Active Cruise Control, Rear Traffic Alert, Multi-Collision Brake, beats Audio, Volkswagen's Modular Infotainment System and much more.

T-Cross will be manufactured for Europe and ROW markets in the Pamplona plant in Spain along side the Polo. Brazil (for South America) and China will build and develop their own versions for their respective markets.

T-Cross may be revealed as early as March at the Geneva Motor Show or later in the year (September) at Paris Motor Show.

Golf Sportsvan update to debut at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt

August 21, 2017 0

Premiere at the IAA: update of the Golf Sportsvan1, featuring Traffic Jam Assist, gesture control and new TSI offering

  • Traffic Jam Assist steers and brakes automatically in stop-and-go traffic
  • Infotainment system with glass display overlay and gesture control
  • Efficient TSI and TDI engines

Since mid-2014, the Golf Sportsvan has been the vehicle of choice for those who swear by the Golf yet are looking for extra seat height, flexibility and space. Volkswagen has now refreshed its compact van with an update, which will be seen for the first time at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main (12 – 24 September). As for technology, the new Golf Sportsvan features items such as three new TSI petrol engines, an expanded range of assistance systems, a new generation of infotainment systems (top system with gesture control) as well as more features in the standard equipment line-up. In terms of appearance, the Golf Sportsvan now makes its mark with its precision-sharpened design.

Following the Golf, Volkswagen is now modernizing the Golf Sportsvan as well with an extensive update. Not only that, the Golf Sportsvan now boasts a more powerful design thanks to new styling refinements. Changes include the newly designed bumpers, new halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, full-LED headlights in place of xenon headlights, and standard LED tail lights on all versions. Five new alloy wheel types (16, 17, and 18-inch) and colours such as the new Cranberry Red shade of paint round out the updates to the exterior. The interior is enhanced with new decorative trim, fabrics, and leather seats.
It is above all technical innovations that define the Golf Sportsvan's update. Particularly noteworthy in this regard is the Discover Pro radio navigation system with 9.2-inch display and gesture control which is new in the Golf Sportsvan. Conventional buttons and controls are a thing of the past with the Discover Pro; manual control is performed solely via the touchscreen and five capacitive touch buttons along the left border of the new infotainment system.

In addition, Volkswagen is offering an interface to the infotainment system for tablets (and smartphones) in the form of the Media Control app. The app can be used to conveniently control many of the functions of the infotainment system from a tablet – regardless of where the user is sitting in the vehicle. Passengers simply connect their tablet to the Discover Media or Discover Pro infotainment system using the WiFi hotspot.

Volkswagen is additionally also offering the 'Security & Service' package in the Golf Sportsvan. It gives the driver access to assistance in a wide range of situations. Highlights include services such as 'Automatic accident notification', 'Roadside service' and 'Service scheduling' (scheduling service with the service garage).

Features providing greater safety and comfort in the Golf Sportsvan include new driver assistance systems, such as Pedestrian Monitoring (part of Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System), Traffic Jam Assist (semi-automated stop-and-go driving up to 60 km/h), Emergency Assist, the latest generations of Park Assist and the proactive occupant protection system, as well as Trailer Assist (including Park Assist), which makes reversing easier when towing.

Three high-tech TSI petrol engines as well as two efficient TDI diesel engines complete the planned drive system line-up. Both powerful TSI engines also come with Active Cylinder Management which deactivates two of the four cylinders in defined operating phases to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Advance sales of the updated Golf Sportsvan begin this autumn for Germany.
