Volkswagen Debuts 2018 Enthusiast Vehicle Fleet at SOWO: The European Experience in Savannah, Georgia

May 18, 2018 0

Herndon, VA (May 18, 2018) — With the summer enthusiast season just around the corner, Volkswagen of America, Inc. will unveil its enthusiast show concept fleet for 2018 at SOWO: The European Experience on Hutchinson Island, Savannah, Georgia, between May 17 and 20. Featuring five models from the brand lineup, these specially prepared show vehicles are inspired by the diverse design tastes of Volkswagen enthusiasts. Four of the concepts share a central fluorescent yellow theme to help them stand out.

2018 Golf R Abstract concept

Using a unique camouflage print wrap, the Abstract concept highlights the recently released 2018 Golf R with DCC and Navigation. The car rides on 20-inch FR design wheels in Mystic Black from ABT Sportsline and uses an H&R Springs Sport Spring system that lowers the vehicle by an inch. ABT Sportsline also outfitted the Golf R with side skirts and an uprated stainless steel performance quad-exhaust system with matte black chrome 4-inch exhaust tips, which gives the powerful Golf R concept an even more dynamic sound. The steering wheel has been upgraded to a BAK Performance Mk 7 custom carbon fiber wheel complete with Golf R blue stitching. The camo design takes cues from the robust urban street art of the Wynwood Art District in Miami, FL, where the North American office of ABT Sportsline is located.

2019 Jetta R-Line SoCal concept

In celebration of the launch of the seventh-generation Jetta, which lands in dealers this month, Volkswagen has been looking back on its predecessors for inspiration. The SoCal concept is a heritage-based design with modern accents. Taking inspiration from the Mk2 Jetta, the body graphics give a nod to the past while drawing attention to the strong vehicle design. Other visual highlights include fluorescent yellow mirror caps, a gloss black roof with geodesic fluorescent yellow design, and body-color wheels with yellow accents. SoCal-based wheel and automotive design company fifteen52 developed the overall concept, giving the car clean lines but with an aggressive stance.  KW automotive developed a prototype ST XTA Coil Over system with adjustable top mounts to lower the ride height 3 inches to properly showcase the fifteen52 Formula GT 19- x 8.5-inch wheels. Additional design elements will be added later in the season.

2018 Tiguan R-Line Aero concept

The Volkswagen R-Line brand badging was the inspiration for the camouflage that wraps the Aero concept.  Air Lift Performance installed its 3P Air Management System with Performance Series front and rear struts, lowering the vehicle ride height up to 4.8 inches, giving this Tiguan concept the most aggressive attitude of the show fleet lineup.  Powder-coated, matte black Rotiform 20-inch Monoblock CCV wheels help balance the busy nature of the livery.  A Thule Motion XT Alpine rooftop carrier, wrapped with the same design scheme, rides on a Thule AeroBlade Edge roof rack system.

2019 Arteon R-Line Highlight concept

The 2019 Arteon lands in the United States later this year. The European enthusiast community has already recognized the potential of the sleek, coupe-like design and wide, planted stance to make a statement on the show field.  Vossen Wheels has clad the Arteon R-Line Highlight concept with its latest release, the Hybrid Forged HF-2, measuring 20 x 9.5 inches front and rear, while a prototype set of Ultra Low Coil Overs from H&R Springs drops the ride height by almost three inches. The Arteon concept has an ultra-fluorescent yellow wrap that accentuates its gloss black and chrome R-Line accents.

2018 Atlas Tanner Foust SEMA concept

“Overlanding has risen in popularity in the past couple of years,” said Tanner Foust. “People are looking for ways to get outdoors and go on adventure trips with the whole family. The Atlas is perfect for off-pavement trips, and I wanted this concept to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities while still maintaining its utility and VW DNA.”

Large tires and off-road wheels compliment the extended fenders and lower body panel cladding to give the vehicle an extreme off-road look. The bumper design raises the approach angle to help provide underbody protection. Light bars inset into the bumper and mounted on the roof illuminate the night for backcountry camping trips, while the roof rack with access ladder make sure there’s even more room inside for the whole family. Minimal changes to the interior include plaid inserts in the seats that are reminiscent of Volkswagen GTI heritage and also reflect on Tanner’s childhood in Scotland.

The Volkswagen enthusiast concept fleet will be making stops at events around the country. To catch a glimpse of these cars in person, be sure to visit one of the following enthusiast shows:

Volkswagen reveals Atlas Tanoak pickup Concept at NYIAS 2018

March 28, 2018 0

Double premiere in New York: Volkswagen presents the Atlas Cross Sport and Atlas Tanoak concept cars

  • Atlas Cross Sport: five-seat Atlas concept car in dynamic coupé style offers a tangible preview of a new Volkswagen SUV for the American market
  • Atlas Tanoak: the concept car being shown in New York is the first pickup to be based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB)
  • Future Atlas range: these two show cars show the potential of a possible family of Atlas vehicles

Volkswagen is igniting the next stage of its global SUV campaign. After recently presenting the new Touareg in China, Volkswagen is now presenting – at the New York International Auto Show (March 28 to April 08) – two new versions of the Atlas developed for the USA: the Atlas Cross Sport and the Atlas Tanoak. The two concept cars illustrate how the Atlas range could be expanded into a model family. With its hybrid drive and a coupé-like rear body design, the five-seat, near-production Atlas Cross Sport was developed for use in metropolitan areas like New York or San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Atlas Tanoak pickup – with its innovative cargo system – is an ideal choice for driving across America’s expansive landscapes. Both Atlas concept cars feature extensively digitalized interiors.

The Atlas is a successful newcomer in the SUV market in the USA. More than 36,000 units have already been sold since it was launched on the market last year. This success confirms that Volkswagen has developed precisely the right car for this important segment with the Atlas. In Manhattan, Volkswagen is now demonstrating – with the show cars it is presenting there – how the Atlas model series will not stop with just one model.

Volkswagen is presenting a pickup whose technical DNA follows the modular transverse matrix (MQB) for the first time: the all-wheel drive Atlas Tanoak. The pickup is named after a species of tree that is home to the Pacific Coast and grows up to 45 meters in height. At a length of 5,438 mm, the Tanoak is considered a mid-size pickup in the USA. The concept car is 2,030 mm wide and 1,844 mm tall. The Atlas Tanoak has been designed as a five-seater with a dual cab. Behind the dual cab is a cargo box measuring 1,627 mm in length, 1,450 in width and 530 mm in height.

The cargo box has been designed to transport bikes, boards and smaller boats. Take the example of boats: there is a newly developed cargo bracket on the cargo bed, which can be released from its parked position near the rear window of the dual cab and be moved to the side walls of the cargo box. This produces a carrier system that can be used to transport canoes, for example, by easily and securely fastening them to fixed mounting points at the cargo bracket and on the roof of the Atlas Tanoak.

Propulsive power for the pickup comes from a 3.6-liter V6 FSI engine of the Atlas model series with an output of 206 kW / 280 PS. It transfers its power and a maximum torque of 350 Nm variably to the two axles via a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Volkswagen SUV campaign
Volkswagen will be strengthening its position in the important SUV segment systematically as part of its TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy. This also applies specifically to the North American market. In upcoming years, two more models will be launched there: the production version of the Atlas Sport Cross and the all-electric I.D. CROZZ announced for 2020. In the USA, the share of SUVs has grown to more than 50 percent of total Volkswagen sales due to the successful Atlas and the new 2017 Tiguan.

Volkswagen Debuts Atlas Cross Sport Concept at the New York Intermational Auto Show

March 28, 2018 0

  • Concept previews a five-seater Atlas SUV built off the MQB platform
  • Production of the five-seater Atlas will start in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2019
  • Atlas Cross Sport concept is 7.5 inches (19cm) shorter than the Atlas, retains same wheelbase
  • The concept uses a plug-in hybrid drive system, with two electric motors, a V6 gasoline engine, and 355 horsepower
  • A conventional mild hybrid drive system would produce 310 horsepower (230kW)
  • Atlas five-seater shows that Volkswagen has a serious SUV strategy

Wolfsburg / New York (March 27, 2018) Volkswagen is about to ignite the next stage of its global SUV strategy. After recently showing the new Touareg in Europe and China, Volkswagen is now debuting a new version of the Atlas SUV at the New York International Auto Show: the Atlas Cross Sport concept.

The new Atlas Cross Sport concept is a five-seat version of the midsize SUV that went on sale in the U.S. in 2017 as a seven-seater. The near-production concept car features a coupe-like profile, an even sportier stance, and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with 355 horsepower (265kW) and an anticipated 26 miles EPA (70km NEDC) of all-electric range. Its high-performance battery can be charged either externally or while driving.

A second version of the Atlas Cross Sport has a conventional hybrid drive without an external battery charging function (HEV). This version can also be driven temporarily in an all-electric mode (electric range approx. 2.5 kilometers or 1.5 miles).

Both models have all-wheel drive (4MOTION with electric propshaft). The actual production vehicle is scheduled to be launched in the U.S. market starting in 2019, and will be built alongside the seven-passenger Atlas and the Passat sedan in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

An innovative range of SUVs is an important element in Volkswagen’s growth strategy for the U.S. market, alongside new products such as the 2019 Jetta.  The latest sales figures show the importance of the new SUV models: In February, 54 percent of Volkswagen’s American customers chose a Tiguan or an Atlas. Volkswagen of America will further increase the market share of its SUV fleet with new models such as the production version of the Atlas Cross Sport concept and the all-electric I.D. CROZZ that has been announced for 2020.

Design
The concept vehicle is 190.8 inches (4846mm) long, 68.3 inches (1734mm) tall and 79.9 inches (2029mm) wide. The powerful exterior is marked at the front by a two-bar grille instead of the three bars on the seven-passenger Atlas. In both vehicles, the LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) are an integral part of the radiator grille and a key feature of the new midsize Volkswagen SUV family. Unlike the Atlas seven-seater, the grille crossbars are also illuminated in white and operate as LED DRLs.

The profile of the Atlas Cross Sport concept combines powerful proportions with sleekly raked C-pillars, as well as short front and rear overhangs. The roof spoiler, which has black side fins, is another distinctive element. The way that the character line transitions directly into the wide, flared wheelarches serves to emphasize its power and presence.

The rear wheelarch on the driver's side features the ‘filler cap’ for connecting the charging plug for the lithium-ion battery; the one on the other side houses an actual fuel filler neck. The 22-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, which are shod with 285/40 tires, have high-gloss polished spokes for a truly premium look.

After flowing through the wheelarches, the character line transitions into an aluminum accent at the rear of the vehicle. LED taillights are positioned above this trim line. The horizontal design motif continues with an aluminum trim piece that extends laterally across the bumper, and into exaggerated tailpipe surrounds, which mirror the taillights above. The vehicle features a low sill height of 33.3 inches for ease of loading.

Interior
Inside the Atlas Sport Cross concept, the horizontal design remains dominant, emphasized by the instrument panel and infotainment screens. The infotainment system touchscreen is located high on the instrument panel and is seamlessly integrated. The driver and front passenger can manage all infotainment functions and the basic vehicle configuration via a 10.1-inch touchscreen with proximity sensors and gesture control. The layout of the graphics changes depending on which driving profile is selected— ‘Snow,’ ‘Sport,’ ‘On-road’ or ‘Off-road’.

Navigation data can be displayed in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional form. In the 3D view, the user has the option of configuring an individual display layout, which can be done on three or more levels that hover above one another in virtual space. Each level shows the map and position of the vehicle, but with different information. On the top level, the driver can configure the Points-of-Interest (POI); the middle level has geographic information such as the current elevation above sea level; the lower ‘Car’ level shows the route and the position of the vehicle.

The 12.3-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit has a resolution of 1,440 x 540 pixels, enabling sophisticated and interactive graphics. These graphics change according to the selected drive mode—for instance, if you are in ‘E-Mode,’ driving on electric power. The Digital Cockpit display can be reconfigured to show information on driving, navigation and assistance functions as necessary. The driver can also transfer data shown on the touchscreen, such as telephone contact images or CD covers, to the display.

The area below the infotainment system and the Digital Cockpit is upgraded by a horizontal trim strip made of brushed aluminum, which runs across the whole width of the interior. As with the infotainment system, a touchscreen is used for climate control settings, including those for the seat heating and ventilation.

On the left-hand side of the center console, the selector lever for the 6-speed DSG® automatic transmission has shift-by-wire functionality. It is always in a central position. Short clicks activate the ‘R,’ ‘N’ and ‘D’ settings. A separate button integrated in the selector lever is used to switch to the ‘P’ position.

Behind the DSG shift lever is the 4MOTION® Active Control that offers ‘On-road,’ ‘Off-road,’ ‘Sport’ and ‘Snow’ driving profiles. This selector has a high-tech design with an HD display and transparent ‘light pipe’ elements that conduct LED light. Between the DSG selector lever, driving profile selector and cupholders are the black hard keys for ‘ESC,’ ‘E-Mode’ and ‘GTE-Mode’ and the aluminum ‘Start/stop engine’ button. Two cupholders are positioned to the right of the DSG selector lever where they are easily accessible.

There is one more functional console in the front of the cabin. In the roofline area, there are touch buttons that control the panoramic glass sunroof, a matching sunshade and interior light functions.

Powertrain
Since the Atlas is based on Volkswagen's modular transverse matrix (MQB), it can be built with all manner of drive systems, including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The Atlas Cross Sport concept uses the same 3.6-liter V6 FSI® engine as the Atlas, making 276 horsepower (206kW) and 266 pound-feet (360Nm) of torque. In the Cross Sport concept, this engine is boosted by two electric motors. The front motor develops 54hp (40kW) and 162 lb-ft (220Nm), and the rear motor makes 114hp (85kW) and 199 lb-ft (269Nm).

Energy for the motors is supplied by a compact 18.0 kWh lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel. The drive system's total power amounts to 355 hp, which potentially enables the Cross Sport concept to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. The top speed is 130 mph.

The Atlas Cross Sport concept could also feature a mild hybrid powertrain. Using the same V6 engine and electric motors, but with a smaller 2.0 kWh battery, the mild hybrid version would produce 310 horsepower and give 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 6.5 seconds. The top speed would remain at 130 mph.

The Atlas Cross Sport PHEV concept can be driven in any of five modes: ‘E-Mode’, ‘Hybrid’, ‘GTE,’  ‘Off-road’ or ‘Battery Hold / Battery Charge’.
  • ‘E-Mode’. The Atlas Cross Sport concept always starts out in the all-electric ‘E-Mode’ provided that the battery is sufficiently charged. The all-electric driving range is up to 26 miles. In E-Mode, the vehicle’s drive power is exclusively supplied by the 114 hp electric motor at the rear axle. In all-electric mode, the gasoline engine is decoupled from the drivetrain by disengaging the clutch, and it is shut off. As soon as the V6 needs to be engaged again, it is coupled to the drivetrain in a nearly imperceptible process. A power electronics unit manages the flow of high-voltage energy from and to the battery and to the electric motors. The 12-volt vehicle electrical system is supplied by a DC/DC converter. The battery is charged via external power sources or while driving.
  • ‘Hybrid’. As soon as the battery’s voltage drops below a certain charge, the Atlas Cross Sport concept switches to ‘Hybrid’ mode. The hybrid version would always start in this mode. Depending on the driving situation, it automatically engages the V6 and/or the rear electric motor. If the driver removes his or her foot from the accelerator or brakes when the battery is not sufficiently charged, both electric motors operate as generators and feed energy recovered from braking into the lithium-ion battery. When the gasoline engine alone is powering the vehicle, the concept car is exclusively a front-wheel drive vehicle. However, the rear axle is rapidly engaged again as soon as the driving situation demands it.
  • ‘GTE’. The driver uses the GTE button to switch to GTE mode, which makes the throttle map, gearshifts and steering even sportier. In addition, the V6 and the electric motors work together in ‘GTE Mode’ during ‘boosting’ to access the full system output and the maximum system torque of 494 pound-feet.
  • ‘Off-road’. As soon as the driver activates the ‘Off-road’ mode, the Atlas Cross Sport concept becomes an all-wheel drive vehicle. In this case, and when the battery's state of charge is low, the front electric motor—now supplied with energy by the V6 gasoline engine—is employed exclusively as a generator and is the energy source for the electric motor on the rear axle. Because the energy for driving the rear wheels is transferred ‘by wire’ and not mechanically, it is referred to as an ‘electric propshaft’. Due to the fact that, in Off-road mode, the gasoline engine drives the rear electric motor via electrical energy from the front electric motor, this all-wheel drive configuration is even available if the battery has a low state of charge. This gives the plug-in hybrid SUV very impressive off-road ability.
  • ‘Battery Hold / Battery Charge’. The dual mode ‘Battery Hold’ (energy content of the battery stays constant) and ‘Battery Charge’ (battery is charged while driving) is activated from a menu in the infotainment system. It might be used, for example, to intentionally prepare for driving in the all-electric mode (‘E-Mode’), which could be required in a city of the future.
In addition to all the above modes, the 4MOTION Active Control offers seven different driving profiles in the Atlas Cross Sport concept: ‘On-road’ (‘Comfort’ and ‘Eco’ modes), ‘Off-road’ (‘Rocks,’ ‘Sludge & Sand’ and ‘Gravel’ modes), ‘Sport’ and ‘Snow’.

March 19, 2018 0

Based off Volkswagen’s award-winning MQB platform, a concept version will be unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Volkswagen of America, Inc., announced today that it will be building a new five-passenger SUV at its Chattanooga factory.
Based off Volkswagen’s award-winning MQB platform, the new Volkswagen SUV will be a variant of the seven-passenger Atlas and, like its sibling, will be designed and engineered for the American market.

“The Atlas has built strong momentum for Volkswagen in the SUV segment, and we are excited to grow our SUV portfolio with this new, Chattanooga-assembled five-passenger SUV,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We are not only committed to this market, we are committed to our U.S. manufacturing home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.”

Woebcken made the announcement in Chattanooga today with Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.
“During my time as Governor, I’ve watched Volkswagen Chattanooga flourish from a single vehicle producer, starting with the Passat, into what it is today—a thriving U.S. manufacturing operation that can produce three models, and counting,” said Governor Haslam. “We value Volkswagen as a committed partner, whose investments in the state have not only created new jobs, but have helped us build a skilled Tennessee workforce. I look forward to watching as VW continues to grow in Tennessee.”

Volkswagen will invest approximately $340 million to bring the vehicle to market, in addition to approximately $900 million already invested to expand the plant for Atlas production. The five-passenger Atlas variant will mark the third Volkswagen model assembled at the Chattanooga factory. Volkswagen Chattanooga also manufactures the Passat, which went on sale in 2011, and the Atlas, which started sales in 2017.

A concept version of the five-passenger SUV will be officially unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Volkswagen is reinforcing its SUV campaign in the USA by adding another model

  • Five-seat version of the Atlas extends its SUV range
  • World premiere of the near-production concept car on
28 March 2018 at the New York International Auto Show
  • New Atlas version will also be produced in Chattanooga

After the successful market launch of the Atlas on the American market, Volkswagen is extending its model range with another SUV. This new SUV is based on the Atlas, has five seats and sports a coupé-like roof line. Already offering a preview of the new model is a near-production concept car that will be presented at the New York International Auto Show next week. Like the seven-seat Atlas, this new five-seat version will also be produced at Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and it was specially designed and developed for the American market.

The SUV campaign is part of Volkswagen's TRANSFORM 2025+ strategy, because SUVs are experiencing increasingly strong customer demand which makes them an important growth driver for Volkswagen. That is why the brand is significantly extending its product range. One of seven Volkswagen cars sold globally is already an SUV. By 2020, 19 SUV models will be offered internationally – from small vehicles in Polo format to large models like the Atlas. These strong products are responsible for a significant upward sales trend in all global regions. Consequently, in 2017 the core brand of the Group achieved sales growth that was multiple times better than the automotive market trend.

The new Atlas shows just how successful the new Volkswagen SUVs are. Since it was launched last year, more than 36,000 vehicles have already been sold. It has made a significant contribution toward boosting the SUV share to over 50 percent in the USA.

Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, Inc. emphasizes this point as well: "The Atlas is providing a strong impetus to Volkswagen, and we are very pleased to add this new five-seat SUV, produced in Chattanooga, to our SUV lineup."

Volkswagen will invest around 340 million US dollars in the vehicle's market launch, in addition to investments of around 900 million US dollars already made to expand the plant for Atlas production. The five-seat version of the Atlas will then already be the third Volkswagen model to be built at the Chattanooga plant. This plant has been producing the US-version of the Passat since 2011 and the Atlas SUV since 2017.

Volkswagen is kicking off the next stage of a global SUV campaign, and at the New York Auto Show (28 March to 8 April) it is presenting a new version of the Atlas developed for North America. The concept car is a five-seat version of the Atlas mid-size SUV that was introduced in the USA in 2017 as a seven-seater, and it illustrates the potential for further versions in this model.

Like the seven-seat Atlas, the new five-seater is also based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). When it comes to design aspects, the near-production concept car impresses with a sporty, compact rear body in coupé style. The side profile combines powerful proportions with a confident presence. A special dynamism is conveyed by the C-pillars, which are angled much lower in the style of a coupé compared to the seven-seater.

The five-seater that is based on the seven-seat Atlas will also be a very attractive product for customers. Advanced engines, an 8-speed automatic transmission, 4MOTION all-wheel drive and comfortable suspension will be offered, as will a comprehensive line-up of driver assistance systems and the latest technologies such as the Active Info Display, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), collision warning and emergency brake assist (Front Assist), Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Blind Spot Monitor, lane keeping system (Lane Assist) and parking steering assistance (Park Assist).

What's In A Name? The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SE

February 08, 2018 0
Front 3/4 view of 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas.
The Volkswagen model name list is filled with exotic sounds---Scirocco, Touraeg, Tiguan.  And now there's Atlas.  Sounds big and familiar, doesn't it?  That's fitting, because for the first time, VW has built a full-size SUV that requires no adjustment in thinking for buyers of American SUVs.

Rear view of 2018 Volkswagen Atlas
2018 Volkswagen Atlas.
A decade ago, the then-new Touareg felt like what it was---a thoroughly German machine and a close cousin to Audi.  But the Atlas is an absolutely American-inspired vehicle, a seven-seater focused on lots of space for people and things. Basically, Volkswagen here is following the path to success blazed by the Honda Pilot.

The premium pricing of a decade ago has been put aside as well, in favor of a Costco mindset---look how much you can get for how little.  The base price of the base Atlas is $30,750.   That one comes with a two-liter turbo four-cylinder engine.  Stepping up to a V6 S model takes the price to $32,150.  Past that, there are another ten variations from which to choose, topping out with the V6 SEL Premium with 4Motion, which begins at $48,740.

Interior view of 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SE
2018 Volkswagen Atlas SE interior.
Our test vehicle was the V6 SE with Tech and 4Motion.

For a base price of $39,140, you get a 276-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, leatherette interior with heated front seats (10-way power driver, four-way manual passenger), 4Motion all-wheel drive, a Climatronic three-zone automatic temperature control system, Front Assist with adaptive cruise control and pedestrian monitoring, stainless steel window trim, a remote opening and closing tailgate, silver roof rails, drive mode selection, power heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a start-stop system, LED headlights and daytime running lights, halogen reflector foglamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear carpeted floormats, tilt-telescoping steering column, a premium color multifunction display, remote start, electric parking brake, self-dimming interior rear-view mirror,  six reading lights, 17 cupholders, VW's Car-Net app system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, a rear camera, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert,  four USB ports (data up front, charging only in the rear) and an eight-speaker audio system.

Which, as we said at the beginning, is a major value proposition.  And the driving experience is a very good one.  A solid, quality, German feel with big American room.  The V6 will cost you at the gas pump, with an EPA average of 17 city/23 highway, which is a shade under the Honda Pilot's 19/26, but still in the same range.  And, as always, your mileage may vary.

At its core, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a smart move for VW.  It should be a contender for anyone shopping for a three-row SUV.

Successful product campaign in 2017: Volkswagen on course for the future

December 28, 2017 0

  • New Polo augments the world of city specialists
  • Update raises the Golf to a new, technical level
  • New model campaign in Brazil begins with the compact Virtus
  • SUV campaign with T-Roc, Tiguan Allspace and Atlas/Teramont
  • Arteon shines as new Grand Turismo of the business class
  • up! GTI and new Touareg to open 2018
  • I.D. Family accelerating electric mobility's breakthrough from 2020

Volkswagen launched one of the most successful product campaigns in the company's history. It saw the debuts of new models such as the compact T-Roc SUV, the sixth-generation Polo, the avant-garde Arteon and the Atlas (USA) / Teramont (China) large SUV model series. One of the most important cars on the world market, the Golf, was also raised in all versions to a new, technical level. Meanwhile in Brazil a totally new compact saloon was launched: the Virtus. This transcontinental product campaign contributed to Volkswagen Passenger Cars being able to increase its number of vehicles supplied in the first eleven months of the year to 5,417,900, up 4.0 per cent. In addition, Volkswagen firmed up in 2017 the time frame for the introduction of the all-electric models of the new I.D. Family. The Volkswagen highlights of the year in a nutshell:

Polo. Volkswagen has completely redesigned the Polo. With an armada of driver assistance systems, digital instruments, glass-encased infotainment systems, a high degree of connectivity and innovative drive systems such as the natural gas 1.0 TGI (66 kW / 90 PS1) turbo engine, which depending on source is practically CO2-neutral, and the 2.0 TSI (147 kW / 200 PS2) engine of the GTI, in 2017 this Polo catapulted itself right to the front in terms of engineering and technology.

Golf, Golf Variant, Golf Sportsvan. In 1974, the first Golf came onto the market. Well over 34 million of the best-selling car have since been produced (as at 30 September). In 2017, Volkswagen developed a technical and visual update for all versions of the Golf, Golf Variant and Golf Sportsvan. New on the drive system front: efficient 1.5 TSI engines with Active Cylinder Management. The new petrol micro hybrid 1.5 TSI ACT BlueMotion (96 kW / 130 PS3/4/5/6) with temporary complete engine
shut-off works here in a particularly sustainable manner. Innovative engines of this kind suit the Golf well: no other car in the world is – as it is – simultaneously offered as a petrol, diesel, natural gas, plug-in hybrid and electric version.

Virtus. In November the new Virtus had its world premiere in Sao Paolo. The compact saloon is based – like, for example, the current Polo and Golf – on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). With a length of 4.48 metres the fastback model can be seen as fitting in between the Golf and Golf Variant. The new Virtus is part of a product campaign begun in Brazil in 2017, with twenty new Volkswagen models due to be launched there by 2020.

T-Roc, Tiguan Allspace and Atlas/Teramont. The SUV range has been considerably expanded this year. This campaign was launched back in 2016 with the debut of the second-generation Tiguan. In 2017, Volkswagen broadened the spectrum of this highly successful model with the addition of the longer, five- and seven-seat Tiguan Allspace (USA: "all-new" Tiguan / China: "All New" Tiguan L). Below the Tiguan, meanwhile, the new T-Roc took centre stage – a charismatic compact SUV for the urban world. Above the Tiguan another newly developed SUV has also been impressing since 2017: the Atlas (USA) and the sibling Teramont model created for China; in each case with up to seven seats.

Arteon. Between the Passat, which is offered in various versions around the world, and the Phideon developed specifically for China, a new Gran Turismo took off in 2017: the Arteon. The five-seat saloon combines the design elements of a sports car with the elegance and space of a fastback. Thanks to extensively interconnected driver assistance systems, the Arteon facilitates some initial partly automated driving functions. These include Traffic Jam Assist, using which the five-door car moves through stop-and-go traffic automatically (at up to 60 km/h and within system limits).

up! GTI, Touareg. We will be continuing full steam ahead in 2018. To begin with Volkswagen will be bringing new dynamism to the small car market with the launch of the 85 kW / 115 PS7 up! GTI, for which advance orders are already being taken.

The spring will then be dominated by the third-generation Touareg8, which has been redesigned right down to the very last LED.

I.D., I.D. CROZZ, I.D. BUZZ. Furthermore, Volkswagen has set the course for the future of electric mobility. Speaking at IAA 2017, Dr Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Brand Board of Management, firmed up on the debut year for the first Volkswagen zero-emission SUV: the I.D. CROZZ8 will arrive on the market by late 2020 – and thus in the same year as the compact I.D. 8 is launched. In California, meanwhile, Dr Diess and Dr Eckhard Scholz, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, announced in August that the zero-emission I.D. BUZZ8 MPV – the reinterpretation of the Bulli – will be the product highlight of 2022. Electrifying prospects…

2018 FAW Volkswagen Compact SUV spotted (Interior Revealed)

December 24, 2017 0
One of two Compact SUV made for China

Volkswagen Group China is poised in 2018 to reveal two compact SUVs for Chinese consumption only. The two joint venture partners SAIC and FAW will share similar dimensions and positioning in the market with the Compact SUV.

With current Volkswagen SUV overall lengths: SAIC Volkswagen T-Cross 4.1m (expected), FAW Volkswagen T-Roc 4.3m (LWB), Tiguan 4.4m, SAIC Volkswagen Tiguan (Allspace) 4.7m,  Touareg (7P) 4.8m and SAIC Volkswagen Teramont / (Atlas) 5.0m.

You can see that the 4.4m up to 4.6m market is still wide open. SAIC Volkswagen Lavida and FAW Volkswagen Bora MQB based models, are believed to be around the 4.6m size once released in 2018 and will share class segments with the two Compact SUVs for China.

The prototype pictured below is believed to be from FAW Volkswagen of its Compact SUV according to Chinese press. The cover is strategically placed on the exterior of the vehicle covering body shape, headlights, taillights etc.
However the photographer was able to get very clear revealing shots of the interior.

The revealing interior images from Autohome.com.cn show Volkswagen's Electronic Park Brake, 4Motion Active Control, Start / Stop button (for fuel use), Start / Stop (for starting the vehicle and switching it off ), Modular Infotainment System with App Connect and DSG. The radio screen is also positioned above the centre dashboard air vents like the Polo (MQB).

Stay tuned as we wait for 2018 to reveal more.
