Road Test: The Volkswagen Golf Mk7.5 Experience - Trying Out the Facelifted and Upgraded Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line, Golf GTI & Golf R

July 19, 2018 0

The Volkswagen Golf is the only type of golf that I like at this moment in time. I actually did not really like both prior to the introduction of the seventh generation Golf. I did not like the game because it actually took too much of my time trying to play it. In fact, if you played it the slightest bit properly it would still require about half a day to complete an 9-hole game with a group

Volkswagen Debuts 2018 Enthusiast Vehicle Fleet at SOWO: The European Experience in Savannah, Georgia

May 18, 2018 0

Herndon, VA (May 18, 2018) — With the summer enthusiast season just around the corner, Volkswagen of America, Inc. will unveil its enthusiast show concept fleet for 2018 at SOWO: The European Experience on Hutchinson Island, Savannah, Georgia, between May 17 and 20. Featuring five models from the brand lineup, these specially prepared show vehicles are inspired by the diverse design tastes of Volkswagen enthusiasts. Four of the concepts share a central fluorescent yellow theme to help them stand out.

2018 Golf R Abstract concept

Using a unique camouflage print wrap, the Abstract concept highlights the recently released 2018 Golf R with DCC and Navigation. The car rides on 20-inch FR design wheels in Mystic Black from ABT Sportsline and uses an H&R Springs Sport Spring system that lowers the vehicle by an inch. ABT Sportsline also outfitted the Golf R with side skirts and an uprated stainless steel performance quad-exhaust system with matte black chrome 4-inch exhaust tips, which gives the powerful Golf R concept an even more dynamic sound. The steering wheel has been upgraded to a BAK Performance Mk 7 custom carbon fiber wheel complete with Golf R blue stitching. The camo design takes cues from the robust urban street art of the Wynwood Art District in Miami, FL, where the North American office of ABT Sportsline is located.

2019 Jetta R-Line SoCal concept

In celebration of the launch of the seventh-generation Jetta, which lands in dealers this month, Volkswagen has been looking back on its predecessors for inspiration. The SoCal concept is a heritage-based design with modern accents. Taking inspiration from the Mk2 Jetta, the body graphics give a nod to the past while drawing attention to the strong vehicle design. Other visual highlights include fluorescent yellow mirror caps, a gloss black roof with geodesic fluorescent yellow design, and body-color wheels with yellow accents. SoCal-based wheel and automotive design company fifteen52 developed the overall concept, giving the car clean lines but with an aggressive stance.  KW automotive developed a prototype ST XTA Coil Over system with adjustable top mounts to lower the ride height 3 inches to properly showcase the fifteen52 Formula GT 19- x 8.5-inch wheels. Additional design elements will be added later in the season.

2018 Tiguan R-Line Aero concept

The Volkswagen R-Line brand badging was the inspiration for the camouflage that wraps the Aero concept.  Air Lift Performance installed its 3P Air Management System with Performance Series front and rear struts, lowering the vehicle ride height up to 4.8 inches, giving this Tiguan concept the most aggressive attitude of the show fleet lineup.  Powder-coated, matte black Rotiform 20-inch Monoblock CCV wheels help balance the busy nature of the livery.  A Thule Motion XT Alpine rooftop carrier, wrapped with the same design scheme, rides on a Thule AeroBlade Edge roof rack system.

2019 Arteon R-Line Highlight concept

The 2019 Arteon lands in the United States later this year. The European enthusiast community has already recognized the potential of the sleek, coupe-like design and wide, planted stance to make a statement on the show field.  Vossen Wheels has clad the Arteon R-Line Highlight concept with its latest release, the Hybrid Forged HF-2, measuring 20 x 9.5 inches front and rear, while a prototype set of Ultra Low Coil Overs from H&R Springs drops the ride height by almost three inches. The Arteon concept has an ultra-fluorescent yellow wrap that accentuates its gloss black and chrome R-Line accents.

2018 Atlas Tanner Foust SEMA concept

“Overlanding has risen in popularity in the past couple of years,” said Tanner Foust. “People are looking for ways to get outdoors and go on adventure trips with the whole family. The Atlas is perfect for off-pavement trips, and I wanted this concept to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities while still maintaining its utility and VW DNA.”

Large tires and off-road wheels compliment the extended fenders and lower body panel cladding to give the vehicle an extreme off-road look. The bumper design raises the approach angle to help provide underbody protection. Light bars inset into the bumper and mounted on the roof illuminate the night for backcountry camping trips, while the roof rack with access ladder make sure there’s even more room inside for the whole family. Minimal changes to the interior include plaid inserts in the seats that are reminiscent of Volkswagen GTI heritage and also reflect on Tanner’s childhood in Scotland.

The Volkswagen enthusiast concept fleet will be making stops at events around the country. To catch a glimpse of these cars in person, be sure to visit one of the following enthusiast shows:

Double premiere at GTI meeting – apprentices from Wolfsburg and Zwickau present the Golf show cars they have developed

May 08, 2018 0

  • Wolfsburg Team shows Golf GTI Next Level with 302 kW  (411 PS) and app control for video game monitor
  • Apprentices from Saxony make their debut with Golf Estate GMOTION with 96 kW (131 PS) CNG and all-wheel drive

Tomorrow, on May 9, the day they have been waiting for will finally arrive for two teams of Volkswagen apprentices. The double premiere of the special unique Golf show cars they have developed and built themselves as to take place at the 37th GTI meeting. Each year, tens of thousands of automobile fans come to Lake Wörthersee for the legendary event. Volkswagen’s budding specialists will be presenting their show cars to a large audience there: the Golf GTI Next Level (from Wolfsburg) and the Golf Estate TGI GMOTION (from Zwickau).

The two unique Golfs were created in about nine months on the basis of ideas from 29 apprentices in 12 vocations. For the design of the exterior and interior, the young women and men contributed considerable crafting skills and used digital development and production methods such as CAD and 3-D printing technology. They also programmed dedicated applications for the control of special vehicle functions from a smart phone or tablet PC.

“During the creation of their dream Golf, our apprentices learn about the complexity of automobile production and many future-oriented topics. They also gain practical experience in the application of digital technologies, control and systems technology and the networking of vehicles with the Internet,” says Andreas Strutz, Head of Vocational Education and Further Training Vehicle Construction of the Volkswagen brand. “For this unique vehicle project, we select especially committed young talents and give them the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues at an early stage.” This year, the project was supported by departments including design, technical development, the pilot hall, the seat center, plastic parts production, the paint shop and the multimedia center.

First premiere: Golf GTI Next Level from Wolfsburg
The Golf GTI Next Level* is powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an output of 302 kW (411 PS) and is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The unique GTI is painted in the standard colors of white silver metallic and deep black pearl effect (at the rear). Contrasting foils with forked arrows are applied to the paintwork. Like the body kit including the rear diffuser and the interior strips of the forged aluminum wheels, these foils are painted by hand.

Digital technologies were used for the creation of the Next Level. The apprentices developed the design of the exterior and the interior on graphic computers – for example for the complex sound and multimedia installation in the rear of the two-seater. They designed the side trims and the mounts for loudspeakers and subwoofer on CAD computers and fabricated them using 3-D printer technology. In addition, the apprentices programmed special apps to control the electric-powered opening cargo floor, the retractable LED monitor and the LED underfloor lighting using a Tablet PC or smart phone.

The Wolfsburg team of project manager Holger Schülke (by training vocations):
motor vehicle mechatronics technicians: team spokesperson Maximilian Klar (21), Florian Dimt (21), Maximilian Purrucker (21), Vincent Siermann (20), electronics technicians for automation: Patrick Schilling (19) and Maurice-Christian Ziesmann (21), vehicle paint technicians: Anna-Katharina Heumann (22) and Marie-Kristin Schildwächter (20), vehicle interior fitters: Henny Stegmann (19) and Lena Volk (20), specialists in office management: Lina Bosse (20) and Tina Geißler (20), technical model maker: Sandra Dombrowski (21), technical product designer: Nico Sennhenn (21), process technician specializing in plastic and rubber engineering: Marc Fitzlaff (23). Maurice-Christian Ziesmann is completing a dual course of studies and is combining his apprenticeship with a bachelor degree course in electrical engineering and information technology (Ostfalia, Wolfenbüttel). Henny Stegmann is completing her apprenticeship with Sitech in Wolfsburg, all the others work at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant. Sitech is the Volkswagen Group company specializing in the development and production of vehicle seats.

Second premiere: Golf Variant TGI GMOTION from Zwickau
14 apprentices from Volkswagen Sachsen are unveiling the Golf Estate TGI GMOTION* with a 96 kW (131 PS) 1.5-liter natural gas engine with seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and integrated all-wheel drive. Together with their mentors, the apprentices from the vehicle plant in Zwickau, the Chemnitz engine plant and the Transparent Factory in Dresden have created a Wörthersee show car that combines a sporting character, elegance and off-road capabilities. The GMOTION shows that alternative powertrains are not only suitable for families but also for business use.

The show car is painted in matt and gloss colors. The Bentley colors ice, hallmark and St James red harmonize with the standard Golf color deep black pearl effect. In the interior, all decorative trims feature chrome paint. The sports seats have red decorative stitching, sewn honeycombs and an embroidered GMOTION logo. The trainees installed a chassis with coil-over suspension, which can be lowered by up to 40 millimeters, and a 4-piston brake system. In addition, they adapted the underbody and the exhaust system to all-wheel drive.

The Zwickau Team of project manager Claudia Kittler (by training vocations):
electronics technicians for automation: Benjamin Liebold (20) and Tobias Siebert (18), vehicle paint technicians: Simon Boguslawski (19) and Denise Zeißler (22), industrial mechanic: Dennis Leuthäuser (21), construction mechanics: Jonathan Hammig (19), Marius Neumeister (21), motor vehicle mechatronics technicians: Tom Dubielczyk (20), Hannes Flade (18), Tobias Kalbas (19), Laura Saller (18) and Elisabeth Trompelt (18), mechatronics technician: Laura Hofmann (19), process technician for coating technology: Laura Wagner (20).

For A Few Dollars More: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf R

April 30, 2018 0
Front view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf R
The 2018 Volkswagen Golf R.
Two months ago, I wrote in glowing terms about the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Autobahn.  I stand by every word.  But what if you want more?   Say...72 more horsepower?

Side view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf R
2018 Volkswagen Golf R.
Then you, my friend, want...and possibly need...the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R.   It's basically a Golf GTI Autobahn with the boost turned up on the turbocharged 2.0-liter four, making 292 horsepower instead of 220, all-wheel drive and DCC Chassis Control.

Put 'em all together and you have the ultimate GTI. It goes faster, handles better than many cars that cost twice as much.  Punch the accelerator and hold on...but know that you have the handling and braking capabilities that match the oomph.

Interior view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf R
2018 Volkswagen Golf R interior.
VW keeps the Golf R very uncomplicated.  You can only get it with a leather interior, nav, and a seven-speed automatic with Tiptronic and Sport mode.  Base price is $39,785, destination charges are $850 and Mojo Mats floormats were the only option that was on our tester, bringing the bottom line to $40,740.

Sounds like a lot when a base Golf can be had for $20,910...and an entry-level GTI for $26,415.  But if you're serious about this sort of thing, you'd be looking at the top-of-the-line GTI Autobahn, and that's $35,070.  The one we reviewed in February carried a sticker of $37,020 with options and destination charges.  So the difference is $3,720...and if you step up to the R, that buys 72 horsepower, all-wheel drive and DCC Chassis Control.

In our book, that's a deal too good to pass up.

The Original Hot Hatch: The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Autobahn

February 26, 2018 0
Front 3/4 view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Thirty-five years ago, a co-worker of mine was dating a very rich man who also knew, liked and had good taste in cars.  Dude could have bought anything on four wheels.  He bought one of the first Volkswagen Rabbit GTIs.

At a time when BMW 3-series were managing 11-second 0-60 runs and the SAAB 900 Turbo was considered blistering fast at 10 seconds flat, the GTI did it in 10.6, for a fraction of the price (roughly $8,500 at the time).  And it handled like it was on rails.  The GTI was a revelation in 1983.

Rear 3/4 view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI
2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Three and a half decades is enough for most thrills to be gone, but not the GTI.  It is still about as much fun as one can have in what is supposed to be an econobox, at a reasonable price.

$26,415 will get you into a 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which these days, packs a 220-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four under the hood and gets to 60 from a standing start in a shade under six seconds, and still manages an EPA estimated 25 miles per gallon city/33 highway.  Steps up from the base GTI are about features and cost you an additional four or nine grand, depending on how loaded you want your GTI.

The SE model, at $30,470, adds LED headlamps, an eight-inch touchscreen audio system and blind spot monitoring.  The top-of-the-line Autobahn, which was our tester, is $35,070 and brings adaptive cruise control, a Fender premium audio system and navigation.

Interior view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Yes, that is an automatic transmission you see in the interior shot above, but it comes standard with a six-speed manual.  Our tester had the automatic, with Tiptronic and sport mode, for an extra $1,100. And, like most modern automatics, it is as good or better than I am at making the right decision for the right gear at the right time to maximize acceleration or economy.

The handling?  Still among the best of the cars we drive on a regular basis here at TireKicker.  With a bottom line of $37,020 (including $850 destination charge), the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI is the hatch to have.

How Do You Say "Subaru" in German? The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack SEL

February 12, 2018 0
Front 3/4 view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
The 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
Since The Great Unpleasantness, Volkswagen has been trying to identify its way forward.  Given that it's a rough road, why not a raised wagon with four-wheel drive?

Rear 3/4 view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.
The formula certainly has worked for Subaru, engendering tons of goodwill, and in the past few years, some very enviable sales figures.  So why not peel off a bit of that with a German alternative?

The Alltrack is basically a Golf Sportwagen with more road clearance and all-wheel drive.  What's not to like?   There are three trim levels, all powered by the same 1.8-liter turbo four and six-speed automatic transmission, all with EPA mileage estimates of 22 miles per gallon city/30 highway.  And there's about a $10,000 price spread between the three levels.

$25,955 is the starting price for the S model, with heated front seats, daytime running lights, and a 6.5-inch color touchscreen sound system.

Step up to $29.765 and you get the SE, which has all of the above, but upgrades to an eight-inch color touchscreen sound system, VW's Car-Net app connect, and a panoramic sunroof.

Interior view of 2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack interior.

Our tester was the top-of-the-line SEL.  Base price $35,660 and the 8-inch color touchscreen now includes navigation, the air conditioning is upgraded to a dual-zone climate control unit and it gets adaptive cruise control.

Quality materials, strong fit and finish and a firm yet supple ride.  Again, what's not to like?

Volkswagen managed to ship ours without a Monroney (the price sticker that goes on the window at the dealership), but taking a stab at the VW website "build one" feature, it looks like the only extra-cost options are dealer-installed stuff ours had none of, so add $850 destination charges and we get to a bottom line of $36,510.   And that's right in the ballpark of a loaded Subaru Forester.

Can the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack sway Subie loyalists?  We'll have to wait and see.
