Brake Safety Awareness Month: Facts About Brakes

August 13, 2018 0
Brake Safety Awareness Month: Facts About Brakes

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- The average vehicle requires about 30,000 parts to build, and of these parts, the braking system is perhaps the most crucial to both yours and your vehicle's safety. August is Brake Safety Awareness Month, and we at Serra Honda Grandville would like to share with you some facts about your brake system that you might not have known!

Additionally, in honor of this important month, we are giving away FREE brake inspections to help ensure that yours are functioning properly!

Brake Safety Awareness Month: Facts About Brakes

Friction brakes are the most common of their kind and consist of a rotating wheel, axle, disc or brake drum along with a non-moving part like a brake pad. The brake pad presses against the rotating part when the brakes are applied, slowing or stopping a moving vehicle.

  • During a typical braking operation, temperatures of braking components can average as much as 662 degrees Fahrenheit!
  • Generally, you should replace your brake pads every 50,000 miles, though depending on a variety of factors like driving habits, location, and climate, you may need to get them replaced sooner.
  • Brake pads have small metal hairs toward the bottom that let the driver know when they're worn down. If you hear a squealing or scraping noise upon braking, get them replaced immediately.
  • If your car begins to shake when braking, this could be a sign of warped rotors. The safest and most cost-effective option is just to have them replaced.

Brake Safety Awareness Month: Facts About Brakes

Standard on most new vehicles since 2012, the antilock braking system (ABS) uses sensors to automatically increase and decrease pressure many times per second, which prevents the wheels from locking up and reduces the amount of time and distance needed to stop the vehicle. ABS works in tandem with the hydraulic brake system, which transfers pressurized brake fluid to the brake lines and braking units to apply pressure to the brakes and slow or stop the vehicle.

  • ABS was invented in Britain in 1958, tested first on motorcycles then used on automobiles in 1966. At first, ABS was too expensive to be used by most automakers, though thanks to advances in computerized braking, has been standard on most new vehicles since 2012.
  • The hydraulic brake system was introduced on the 1920 Duesenberg, an American luxury car. In 1924, it began to be used on mass-produced cars from Chrysler. It is now used on nearly all vehicles today.

During Brake Safety Awareness Month, the service department at Serra Honda Grandville will be giving away FREE brake inspections! Be sure to take advantage of this offer to ensure that your braking system is running at its best, as your brakes are the most important to your safety when it comes to vehicle components!

8 Raddest Bromances of All Time

July 31, 2018 0

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- Every guy has his group of buddies, but out of all of them, there's that one guy that's extra special. That guy who's been through everything with you. That guy who knows you better than you know yourself. That guy who makes your girlfriend or wife jealous. That guy who's really not just a guy, but your bro, sharing that awesome, unbreakable bond known as the "bromance."

Credited to Dave Carnie, editor of the skateboard magazine Big Brother in the 1990s who used the term to describe sort of relationship formed by skaters who spent a lot of time together, the term "bromance" is defined as a "very close but non-romantic relationship between two men." The term didn't enter the mainstream vocabulary until about 2005 when it began to be thrown around Hollywood.

In honor of the International Day of Friendship, here are Serra Honda Grandville's picks for the top 10 raddest bromances of all time!

1. JOHNNY DEPP AND TIM BURTON

With a bromance so strong that it's become an internet meme, the dynamic duo of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton is one that's as right as peanut butter and jelly. Beginning in the early 90s when Depp was cast as the titular character in Burton's dark fantasy-romance Edward Scissorhands, their almost thirty-year friendship and artistic collaboration has produced a total of eight films.

In his memoir, Burton writes of Depp, "What more can I say about him? He is a brother, a friend, my godson's father. He is a unique and brave soul, someone that I would go to the ends of the earth for, and I know, full and well, he would do the same for me."

2. HENRY FORD AND THOMAS EDISON

Meeting at the 1896 convention of the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, the friendship between Henry Ford and Thomas Edison is one for the history books - and in them as well! As a boy, Ford had idolized the already established inventor Edison, who would later encourage the ambitious engineer to "keep at it," three little words that cemented their lifelong bond.

When Edison died, Ford had requested that Edison's son capture his final exhale in a glass vial, which he did. Ford then kept this vial in his desk for the rest of his day, which he said was meant to "preserve [Edison's] life and breath."

3. BEN AFFLECK AND MATT DAMON

Meeting at the Cambridge Ringe and Latin School and later moving out to Los Angeles to pursue their mutual craft together, the bromance between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon is one of Hollywood's most well-known. They even appeared in their first film together, Good Will Hunting, which went on to be nominated for nine Academy Awards and launched both of their careers.

In 2009, it was revealed they're more than just best friends but also related, with both actors being descendants of a bricklayer who settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts around 1630, making them 10th cousins once removed.

4. FRANK SINATRA AND DEAN MARTIN

The legendary Rat Pack is one of history's most beloved entertainment groups, but the friendship between crooners Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin was really something to sing about. The bromance between these two honey-voiced Italian heartthrobs lasted over four decades, and their unmistakable chemistry on stage made them a powerhouse.

As with any longtime friendship, however, theirs was not without its rough spots. Martin began a downward spiral after the death of his son, which caused him to become withdrawn and borderline reclusive, unlike the party animal Sinatra had known for so many years. A scuffle during their 1988 reunion tour put a strain on their relationship, but they soon reconciled.

When Martin died on Christmas Day in 1995, his devastated best pal was quoted as saying, “Dean has been like the air I breathe, always there, always close by. He was my brother not by blood, but by choice.”

5. SIR IAN MCKELLEN AND SIR PATRICK STEWART

When it comes to friendship goals, few can hold a candle to that of Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart. Meeting on the set of X-Men in 1999, McKellen and Stewart quickly became friends, despite playing sworn enemies as Magneto and Dr. Charles Xavier, respectively. Since then, these two legends of the stage and screen have maintained an equally legendary bromance, with McKellen even officiating Stewart's wedding in 2013. Nineteen years and still going strong, you can find these two living it up together on social media, where their many adventures are documented.

6. JARED PADALECKI AND JENSEN ACKLES

The close bond that the demon-hunting Winchester Brothers share on the hit television series Supernatural extends beyond the realm of fiction, as actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are the best of friends behind the scenes. When the show brought them together in 2005, the connection was instant, and the guys even shared a house for a while and later were groomsmen at each other's weddings. As the stars of the longest-running show in CW/WB history (thirteen and hopefully still counting), Padalecki and Ackles largely credit the success of Supernatural to their off-screen bromance, with Ackles citing how "crucial" it is that lead-actors share personal chemistry in order them to work well together.

7. J.R.R. TOLKIEN AND C.S. LEWIS

In the 20th century, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis dominated the world's imagination with The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, respectively, translated into more than 39 languages with over 300 million copies printed and later movies that earned more than $6.4 billion combined in the global box office. Even more legendary than their impact on literature, however, was their amazing friendship.

The two met when they were both teachers at Oxford University in 1926, and were actually rivals at first. They soon accepted one another's differences and forged an excellent friendship and explored their mutual love of fantasy tales through their membership of a literary society called the Inklings. Although, they both agreed that while they lived for the genre itself, it lacked entries that they actually wanted to read, so they decided to write their own. And the rest is history.

About a decade after the publication of The Lord of the Rings, Lewis passed away leaving his best friend absolutely heartbroken. Tolkien is quoted saying, "So far I have felt the normal feelings of a man of my age—like an old tree that is losing all its leaves one by one. This feels like an axe-blow near the roots. Very sad that we should have been so separated in the last years, but our time of close communion endured in memory for both of us."

8. NIKOLA TESLA AND MARK TWAIN

Who knew that one of history's most brilliant scientists and an influential literary giant were best friends? Nikola Tesla and Samuel Clemens (known professionally as Mark Twain), first met at a New York social club of which they were both members in 1894. When Tesla was a kid, he suffered from a terrible illness that nearly claimed his life, and claimed that the only thing that got him through this time were the stories penned by Mark Twain. He would later be able to recall this to Twain himself, who was reportedly moved to tears, and the two remained friends ever since.

Amidst the all-out battle between Tesla's alternating current and rival Thomas Edison's direct current in 1895, Twain would help out his friend by volunteering to use his own body as a conductor, which brought more visibility to Tesla and helped to establish him as a force to be reckoned with in the scientific community.

July 18th is National Hot Dog Day, and you'd be surprised at all the interesting dishes you can create! Here are Serra Honda Grandville's picks for the best hot dog recipes!

HISTORY

No one is really sure when the hot dog is invented, but most people agree that they have roots in 13th century Germany, and most likely brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century. As early as the 1860s, there are accounts of street vendors selling hot dogs in buns in New York City. In 1893, the owner of the St. Louis Browns (present-day St. Louis Cardinals) Chris von de Ahe started selling them at baseball games and the amusement park he owned. After they were introduced at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago that same year, their popularity skyrocketed.

As for the name "hot dog," that is widely attributed to dachshunds who were also brought over by the Germans along with the food with which they share a resemblance. This is also reinforced by the fact that the Germans themselves referred to these dogs as "little sausages."

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

July 12, 2018 0
5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- Owning a car is a big responsibility. Like any intricate machine, they require a lot of TLC to keep running at their best, but they can't do it without you! The stellar service department at Serra Honda Grandville can help you with any problem, big or small, but sometimes your lifestyle and other factors may not allow you to pop in as soon as you'd like.

Whatever the reason, we're still here to help with some simple maintenance hacks for your car that you can do yourself until you can come in to see us, as well as some cleaning hacks to keep your ride looking sharp! The best part is: they all use things that you might already have around the house!

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

1. CLEAR NAIL POLISH FOR CRACKS AND SCRATCHES

If you get a crack in your windshield, it will spread over time if you don't take care of it. In order to prevent this until you can get into the shop, clear nail polish works in a pinch! Just apply a thin layer at either end of the crack, and the resin in the polish will act as a temporary seal to prevent it from spreading. This hack also works on scratches to ensure that the exposed metal doesn't rust until you can get a touch-up!

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

2. DRYER SHEETS FOR AIR FRESHENING

There are few things more heavenly than the smell of freshly cleaned clothes, and you can get that pleasant scent in your car! Dryer sheets are a great alternative to traditional air fresheners. Throw a couple under your seats or in your air vents for a constantly fresh smell.

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

3. PLUNGER FOR DENTS

Have a nice dent in the side of your car? Get a plunger! Just place it over the dented surface and pull until the dent pops out.

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

4. TOOTHPASTE FOR HEADLIGHTS

Hazy headlights not only look terrible, they're also dangerous as filmy build-up can block their light! If you notice a dull or foggy look on their plastic lenses, grab a bottle of toothpaste from your bathroom. Spread it all over the lens, buff it with a cloth, then rinse with water.

5 Maintenance and Cleaning Hacks for Your Car

5. OLIVE OIL FOR THE INTERIOR

If your interior is looking a little lackluster, buff it with a coffee filter dabbed in olive oil for a shiny finish! Olive oil can also be used on glass surfaces such as your windows and your entertainment display.

Do you have any maintenance and cleaning hacks for cars you'd like to share? We want to know! At Serra Honda Grandville, we're all about helping your car look and perform at its best. If you have any questions regarding service, feel free to contact us!

Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

July 03, 2018 0
Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- On the 4th of July, we celebrate our country's independence from tyranny as well as our American values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A traditional celebratory event during this holiday are fireworks and, while beautiful, they can also be dangerous if handled improperly.

Serra Honda Grandville is here with some firework safety tips to ensure you spend your 4th having fun, and not in the hospital! Just like we care about your safety on the road, we care about it in life as well and want your 4th of July to be the best (and safest) it can be!

THE FACTS

Before we get into our tips for firework safety, let's talk about why it's so important. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks are responsible for 18,500 fires, including 1,300 structural fires, 300 vehicle fires, 16,900 outside and other fires every year. On top of that, these fires cause an average of three deaths, 40 injuries, and an average of $43 million in property damage.

The NFPA also reported that in 2015, U.S. emergency rooms treated an estimated 11,900 people for fireworks-related injuries, and children younger than 15 accounted for one-third of those treated.

Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

1. SPARKLERS

Sparklers are popular amongst young children, but they're a lot more dangerous than you think if not handled properly. They can burn as hot as 2,000 degrees - which is enough to melt some metals - and parents should be present at all times to help their child hold their sparkler safely, never let them hold one by themselves. And be careful once they're extinguished too, as the burnt part is still very hot!

Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

2. NEVER RELIGHT A DUD

If your firework reaches the end of its fuse and fails to take off, DO NOT attempt to relight it! The explosion could simply be delayed, and if you're crouched on the ground or holding it in your hand trying to relight it, your holiday will turn horrible in a split second. Instead, wait 20 minutes then soak the dud firework in a bucket of water to ensure that it's completely disabled.

Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

3. ALCOHOL + FIREWORKS = BAD TIME

Alcohol impairs your judgment as well as your motor skills, which are two things you need when handling fireworks! Even if you've only had a couple, you should never be using fireworks when you've been drinking.

Firework Safety Tips to Keep Your Fourth of July Fun

4. PROTECT YOUR PETS

Firework safety doesn't just apply to humans, your pets need to be safe too! If you go to a fireworks show, it's recommended that you don't bring a pet. If you do, make sure that they're wearing proper identification just in case they run off due to all the loud noises. If fireworks are being used near your home, put your pet in a safe interior room to shield them from the sound. NEVER use fireworks near your pets!

5. REPORT ILLEGAL FIREWORKS

Illegal fireworks, like M-80s and quarter sticks, should be reported to the fire or police department. No matter what anyone tells you, they are listed as illegal by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. In Michigan, any damage or injury caused by illegal fireworks can stick you with a felony or misdemeanor punishable by up to 5 years in prison or $10,000 in fines.

On top of that, their production does not include quality control and they're often coated in explosive dust, which can cause them to detonate if exposed to any friction like that which results from pocket storage. No matter how much of an expert you think you are, these guys are bad news. We know that you may not like the idea of reporting someone, but trust us, you could save lives and property by doing so!

This 4th of July, we all love to go to an awesome fireworks display to celebrate. They're pretty fun to use at home, but they should always be used responsibly. From all of us at Serra Honda Grandville, we hope you have a happy and safe holiday!

American Honda is Most Represented Manufacturer on Cars.com 2018 American-Made List

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- Honda boasts one of the most diverse United States manufacturing footprints of any other international company operating in America. This is reflected in the 2018 American-Made Index released by Cars.com, in which Honda is the most represented automaker occupying four of the top ten spots with the 2018 Honda Odyssey minivan, 2018 Honda Ridgeline mid-size pickup truck, 2018 Honda Pilot SUV and 2018 Acura MDX luxury SUV.

Each Honda model that made the list was designed and developed in the U.S. at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. facilities in Ohio and California. The Honda Odyssey, Ridgeline and Pilot are produced exclusively by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama, with the Acura MDX now produced exclusively at Honda of America Mfg.’s East Liberty, Ohio plant.

For the American-Made Index, Cars.com assesses several factors including assembly location, domestic parts content, U.S. factory employment adjusted by sales, engine and transmission origin; and for tires, heavier curb weight is considered. For more information about the "Cars.com 2018 American-Made Index," visit their website.

In 2017 alone, Honda produced 1.2 million vehicles in the United States, and nearly two-thirds of all Honda and Acura products sold were made locally using domestic and globally-sourced parts. Specifically for the Acura brand, five out of six models sold in the U.S. were manufactured here.

Additionally, Honda operates 14 major research and development centers in North America with the capacity to fully design, develop and engineer many of the products sold across the country. Cumulatively, Honda has invested over $20 billion dollars in its U.S. sales, manufacturing, and R&D operations; including more than $5.9 billion in new manufacturing investment within the past five years.

How to Overcome Road Rage

How to Overcome Road Rage

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- At Serra Honda Grandville, we've talked about a great many things here on our blog, but now it's time for the hard-hitting content. Something Psychology Today reports that over 78% of Americans admit to doing, and chances are you or someone you know is part of that chunk of the population. Something that feels so natural at the moment, but can actually be detrimental to your health, not to mention incredibly dangerous to other drivers!

You've guessed it, we're talking about road rage. While even the most zen among us is nearly powerless to resist the instinct to just lose it when someone cuts you off on the way into work, we're here with some tips to help you relax when your trip gets stressful.

How to Overcome Road Rage

1. CHANGE YOUR THINKING

People who are prone to anger are almost three times more likely to suffer a heart attack, according to the American Psychological Association. Other health risks in people who are quick to anger are obesity (and consequently difficulty losing weight), depression, and stroke. On top of that, you're out there piloting two-tons of motorized metal, which you don't need an expert to tell you is a recipe for disaster.

If you're the type that goes from 0-60 as fast as your car does, you may want to consider cognitive reprogramming. The next time someone cuts you off, think to yourself, "is making my point worth risking my life?" or do a mental 180 and laugh it off. You'd be surprised how soothing laughter can be, and how it can completely redirect your thought process and mood!

2. PLAN AHEAD

Do you find yourself weaving in and out of traffic in the morning? Do you always allow yourself just enough time to get to where you need to be? If so, then you're headed right down the road to rage. If you've got an important meeting or an obscenely punctual boss, try to wake up earlier and catch the morning traffic report to plan around any delays! On top of that, allowing yourself some chill time with a nice cup of coffee rather than flying out the door in the morning does wonders for your stress levels throughout the day. If you over-snooze your alarm (let's be honest we all have), just call ahead to the office and accept the fact that you're running a bit behind. It's not worth endangering yourself and others on the road!

3. YOUR CAR IS FOR DRIVING

The cheap thrill of flooring it when your emotions are running high is exactly that, a cheap thrill. Before you put the pedal to the metal, take a deep breath and ask yourself: "What does this accomplish? Do I want to let someone I don't even know disrupt MY serenity?" Chances are the person you just sped past to teach a lesson wasn't even paying attention to you in the first place, and now you've just rear-ended the person in front of you, who is REALLY paying attention to you!

If you had a nerve-wracking day at work, your significant other is pushing all of your buttons, or just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, give yourself some time to defuse before you get behind the wheel.

4. GET ENOUGH SLEEP

You may be an adult, but if there's one thing that hasn't changed since you've been a toddler, it's that you're cranky when you don't get enough sleep! And it's even worse when you get behind the wheel. According to pretty much every doctor that's ever doctored, the average adult should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Having a nice cup of chamomile tea or performing relaxation breathing exercises to let go of the day before bed can help you drift peacefully off to dreamland, and stay there. If you're still having difficulty, pay the doc a visit. There's no shame in getting help when your health and safety are concerned!

5. BE MINDFUL OF OTHERS

Whether we're aware of it or not, EVERYONE views the world through their own lens. You're you 100% of the time, so its only natural that you compare the actions and perceptions of others to your own. Doesn't mean you're a bad person, it's just how we're programmed! Although, it might surprise you how much your stress level (especially behind the wheel) can drop when you allow yourself a good dose of empathy.

When you feel that another person is an "idiot" on the road, you're actually making a judgment about how they're acting in relation to you. Instead, consider what they might be going through. Perhaps they have a small child or an animal in the car, got a call that a loved one is in the hospital, or just had a bad day at work like you. Mindfulness has been shown to help reduce stress because it cultivates a sense of community. When you put yourself in someone else's shoes, you can better relate to them.

We all experience road rage at one point or another, but it's ultimately up to you whether or not you allow it to consume you! At Serra Honda Grandville, we want you and your family to be safe no matter where the road takes you, and part of that helping to ensure you have the tools necessary to check your feelings behind the wheel and overcome! Let's battle road rage together!
