1500x700_Car-Brakes

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- The average vehicle requires about 30,000 parts to build, and of these parts, the braking system is perhaps the most crucial to both yours and your vehicle's safety. August is Brake Safety Awareness Month, and we at Serra Honda Grandville would like to share with you some facts about your brake system that you might not have known!

Additionally, in honor of this important month, we are giving away FREE brake inspections to help ensure that yours are functioning properly!

Friction brakes are the most common of their kind and consist of a rotating wheel, axle, disc or brake drum along with a non-moving part like a brake pad. The brake pad presses against the rotating part when the brakes are applied, slowing or stopping a moving vehicle.

  • During a typical braking operation, temperatures of braking components can average as much as 662 degrees Fahrenheit!
  • Generally, you should replace your brake pads every 50,000 miles, though depending on a variety of factors like driving habits, location, and climate, you may need to get them replaced sooner.
  • Brake pads have small metal hairs toward the bottom that let the driver know when they're worn down. If you hear a squealing or scraping noise upon braking, get them replaced immediately.
  • If your car begins to shake when braking, this could be a sign of warped rotors. The safest and most cost-effective option is just to have them replaced.

Standard on most new vehicles since 2012, the antilock braking system (ABS) uses sensors to automatically increase and decrease pressure many times per second, which prevents the wheels from locking up and reduces the amount of time and distance needed to stop the vehicle. ABS works in tandem with the hydraulic brake system, which transfers pressurized brake fluid to the brake lines and braking units to apply pressure to the brakes and slow or stop the vehicle.

  • ABS was invented in Britain in 1958, tested first on motorcycles then used on automobiles in 1966. At first, ABS was too expensive to be used by most automakers, though thanks to advances in computerized braking, has been standard on most new vehicles since 2012.
  • The hydraulic brake system was introduced on the 1920 Duesenberg, an American luxury car. In 1924, it began to be used on mass-produced cars from Chrysler. It is now used on nearly all vehicles today.

During Brake Safety Awareness Month, the service department at Serra Honda Grandville will be giving away FREE brake inspections! Be sure to take advantage of this offer to ensure that your braking system is running at its best, as your brakes are the most important to your safety when it comes to vehicle components!
