HISTORY
No one is really sure when the hot dog is invented, but most people agree that they have roots in 13th century Germany, and most likely brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century. As early as the 1860s, there are accounts of street vendors selling hot dogs in buns in New York City. In 1893, the owner of the St. Louis Browns (present-day St. Louis Cardinals) Chris von de Ahe started selling them at baseball games and the amusement park he owned. After they were introduced at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago that same year, their popularity skyrocketed.
As for the name "hot dog," that is widely attributed to dachshunds who were also brought over by the Germans along with the food with which they share a resemblance. This is also reinforced by the fact that the Germans themselves referred to these dogs as "little sausages."
