Tips for Traveling with a Crew

March 01, 2018 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Spring break is coming up quickly and many families might be considering taking a trip. If you have little ones and a road trip is on the docket, it's time to start getting ready. Kids can make any sort of travel complicated, but a long road trip downright hectic if you're not prepared. We've got some tips that'll help you have a fun and safe road trip with your little ones, no matter where you're going. Check out our tips for traveling with a crew below and use them on your spring break road trip.

Tips for Traveling with a Crew

1. Inspect Your Car

Before anything else, you'll want to make sure your vehicle is in good shape to hit the road, because the last thing you want to deal with is being stuck on the side of the road with car troubles and impatient children. Things that should be inspected before you go include your oil level, tires, wiper fluid, and of course, your gas tank level. If you bring your car into RiverTown Honda for an oil change before your trip, we'll be sure to give your vehicle a thorough inspection to help you avoid any potential mishaps! Make sure to fill up your tank before you leave as well, or as you head out of town so you don't have to deal with finding a station in a potentially unfamiliar area.

2. Stock the Car with Necessary Emergency Items

Every individual and family is different, but there are some basic items you should always have in your car should you have to deal with car troubles on the road. Extra change or money, jumper cables, a tire pump, a flashlight, a blanket, extra cell phone charger, and a first aid kit are what we consider necessary items. Other items you might want to consider bringing include extra medication, hats or sunscreen, a trash can or trash bags, extra water bottles, and whatever else you need to keep your kids comfy, healthy, and safe.

3. Bring Snacks!

What would a road trip be without some good snacks? If you've ever run into someone who gets "hangry" or hungry and angry, like a toddler for instance, you'll understand why snacks are so important! You can either stop at a gas station before heading out of town, or stock up with what you have at home. Most times, you can bring along smarter, more healthy snacks that'll keep you full by using what you have at home, as opposed to buying sugar-filled junk food items at the gas station or convenience store. See our 7 on-the-go kids snacks to get some homemade snack ideas and get inspired to create your own! Don't forget to also bring plenty of beverages to stay hydrated, but be careful to ration these items, otherwise your driver will be stopping often for bathroom breaks.

4. Prepare Entertainment

If you're taking a trip with just adults you might be able to skip this step, but with children, this step is absolutely necessary. In many newer vehicles, especially family based ones like the 2018 Honda Odyssey, entertainment is plenty with the back seat screen for movies and shows, wifi, and the group playlist feature. In older vehicles, you might have to supply the entertainment yourself. Find fun material-free road games you can play together, bring along handheld game consoles, or make road-trip ready activity bags or kits with the ideas on our Road Trip Tips Pinterest board!

5. Keep Things Organized

If you're taking a short road trip or a long road trip, do your best to keep things organized as you go. This can help you easily access emergency items when needed, not worry about cleaning up a mess when you arrive, and help you get home in a vehicle that doesn't resemble a garbage can. Keep everyone's luggage or items in the same areas, offer items like a bag for garbage or recyclables and storage solutions for small items, and carry along supplies for any spills or messes that need immediate cleaning. This will also help you avoid turning back in your seat a million times because your little ones can't find what they need!

6. Plan Fun Stops to Break Up a Long Trip

Taking a longer trip with little ones? Make sure to plan some fun stops to break up the long periods of sitting. If you're a parent, you know it's no fun to be dealing with a temper tantrum or fussiness in the confines of a car or minivan. Of course, you'll need to stop for the bathroom and meals here and there, but some extra stops along the way can help diffuse the growing crankiness. Stopping at a rest stop and taking a quick walk or playing a game of tag, as long as the weather permits, might help to get out some of that pent up energy. You could also plan for a longer trip and make some educational stops like for tourist sights, museums, etc.

We hope these tips for traveling with a crew give you all the necessary tools for a stress-free road trip and memorable spring break vacation! If you need assistance in inspecting your vehicle or with an oil change before you leave town, stop by our Express Service Lane for routine maintenance services in 90 minutes or less. You can save big just by coming to RiverTown Honda, and even more by utilizing our service coupons.

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

February 19, 2018 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Spring break is just around the corner for many of us in the West Michigan area, or at least it's a topic that's top of mind now. Grandville schools will be heading out for the week long break on April 5th, leaving you and your family plenty of time to plan a fun trip. We understand that it can be stressful to break out of the typical "spring break" mold and make it a fun vacation for the whole family. If you're looking to avoid the college party scene, we've got some ideas for you! Check out these 5 out of state spring break destinations that are simply perfect for families.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

Otherwise known as OBX, is part of a long string of islands off the North Carolina coast. We recommend renting a condo or vacation home for the week and grabbing your family and some friends to go along. There you can fish, swim, boat, and relax on the water in the beautiful warm weather. There's also plenty of museums to attend if you're interested, and aero tours you can take to view the coast. The relaxed vibe makes it a great destination for families. It'll take about 15 hours to make the trip by car from Grandville.

Washington D.C.

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

If you're searching for a beach spot where you can fully relax and pick up a nice tan, Washington D.C. isn't the spot. But if you're looking for an interesting and educational place with tons of activities to do within walking/local transport distance, this spring break spot is ideal. Many of the museums and sights are free and kid friendly, and the adults will enjoy the great selection of food available. You can definitely make this vacation into a road trip. It'll take about 10-12 hours, depending on your stops, coming from Grandville.

Maui, Hawaii

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

Have a little one in your family that's simply obsessed with Moana? Cure their craving with a trip to Hawaii! Maui isn't just a name of a character in the movie, but is an island that's perfect for a family vacation. This island isn't as big, as crowded, or as quiet as some of the other islands. Plus, it offers great views, wildlife, history/culture, and this time of year is ideal for travel! Of course, you'll have to fly for this one, but you might be able to save a little if you drive to the Detroit airport for departure.

Keystone, Colorado

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

If your family is full of energy, Keystone, Colorado is the place to go! It's the opposite of a warm vacation, but the views are gorgeous, the skiing is top-notch, and the Keystone resort was rated the #1 Best U.S. Ski Resort for Families by USA Today. The entire resort is designed to make hauling ski/snowboard gear to the mountains easy for the whole family, but you'll likely want to fly to get there in the first place. The ski season comes to an end April 22nd at Keystone, so you'll want to make sure your trip fits in before closing time.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida

5 Out of State Spring Break Destinations Perfect for Families

Located on the left side, or gulf side, of Florida, Sanibel and Captiva are islands that offer everything you want in a warm vacation without the college crowd! There are plenty of activities to do for the entire family, along with relaxing on the beach and swimming in the beautiful blue salt water. The little ones will enjoy snorkeling and sea shell hunting, while the adults will enjoy the small downtown areas available for shopping and food. You'll most likely want to fly into Fort Meyers and will need a vehicle to get to Sanibel Island.

We hope these 5 out of state spring break destinations are perfect for your family and offer you a few options for a fun vacation. If you're traveling by vehicle, make sure to come see us at RiverTown Honda for a pre-spring break inspection, oil change, tire rotation, etc. We'll make sure your vehicle, no matter what you drive, is ready to take you wherever you choose to go! We can also get you a great deal on a new Honda, built for safety, reliability, and high resale value. You can easily make an appointment online, or by giving us a call. Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

October 06, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––We're so lucky to live in a state where Fall is alive with color! No matter which part of the Mitten you choose to go this season, there's a peak time to view the fall colors. These peak times are estimates of when the most fall color will be present in any given region. We're here to help you get the most out of autumn and find the best views in the state! Without further ado, here are the best places to view the fall colors in Michigan and when you should go.

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Where: Glen Arbor, MI
When: October 10-14

It's recommended to hit some of these peak times towards the middle or end of the period so you get the best chance of full fall color coverage! Glen Arbor is located amongst the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan. Home to the Glen Lakes and the Sleeping Bear Heritage trail, you can be sure to find views all around you!

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Where: Tawas Bay, MI
When: October 10-14

Tawas is located on the opposite side of the state on Lake Huron. The stretch of US 23 that runs through (from Mackinaw to Standish) is appropriately named the Sunrise Coast. We recommend visting the historic Tawas Point Lighthouse, especially if you're a bird watcher. It's considered one of the best birding spots in the midwest.

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Where: Port Austin, MI
When: October 12-17

The little town known as Port Austin lies at the tip of the Mitten's thumb. This area is home to the infamous Turnip Rock, ideal for kayaking around in the fall when the weather is nice. We think you'll enjoy the beautiful fall colors on the rocky shores of beautiful Lake Huron whether you're on the water or just taking a hike around the lake.

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Where: Grand Haven, MI
When: October 13-18

The stretches of beautiful freshwater beaches and the piers are reason enough alone to visit Grand Haven throughout the year. During the fall, Grand Haven has some of the most gorgeous views around. You can walk along the beach, feel a nice breeze off the lake, and enjoy the colors from the shore.

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Where: Kalamazoo, MI
When: October 18-21

Kalamazoo is home to Western Michigan, countless great places to eat, and the Kalamazoo River! While you might not think of a city as a great place to see the fall colors, they're all around K-zoo. We think you'll enjoy the lovely scenery at the Nature Center, the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, or throughout the downtown area along the river.

If you can't make it to the locations mentioned above or are looking to head somewhere else, here's a handy guide of when your area will be the most colorful so you can go enjoy a local viewing spot.

Best Places to View the Fall Colors in Michigan & When You Should Go

Wherever you go this season, make sure to do it in a Honda! Fall Car Care and Routine Maintenance Tips from RiverTown Honda

September 28, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.––The fall season isvupon us, and that means it's time to prepare for the cold winter weather ahead. We care about your safety on the road year-round, so it's important to keep up with routine maintenance, especially when the weather starts to get dangerous. Caring for your car will not only help your car run its best, but will also keep you safe by reducing the chance for mechanical issues that would put you at risk when you're driving. Now let's get down to it! It's time for Fall Car Care and routine maintenance tips from RiverTown Honda that'll help you prepare for the road ahead.
Fall Car Care and Routine Maintenance Tips from RiverTown Honda

Belt and Hose Auto Maintenance

The many belts and hoses within and around your vehicle hold a very important job: transferring power or fluids. Because these components are responsible for making other components run or function correctly, they're important to have inspected. On this page we'll review each belt and hose, their purpose, when to service them, and signs to look for if they need repair.

Auto Windshield Damage Repair

On this page, we review just how important your windshield is to your safety! Fun fact: your windshield provides up to 45% structural integrity in a forward collision. We'll discuss the effect windshield damages can have on your safety when the weather starts to turn, and why you should have your windshield repaired.

Vehicle Heating and Ventilation System Inspections

Your vehicle's heating and ventilation system is there to not only keep you warm and comfortable, but also to keep your vision of the road clear! While this system doesn't need to be consistently on your routine maintenance list, it should be inspected once a year or so as it can affect other parts in your engine if broken. Check out this page to learn how it works, what parts it's made of, and signs to look for if your heating and ventilation system is in need of repair.

Weather Stripping Repair and Replacement

The weather strips around your vehicle are typically plastic or rubber. They're mostly responsible for keeping outside elements out of your car's interior, but also hold the job of securing parts like your doors, trunk, or windshield on your vehicle while you're on the road. Overtime they wear out, and can tear or detach. Before the weather gets cold, the rain starts pouring, or the wind starts blowing, have your weather strips replaced or repaired. See how to do so on this page!

Emergency Kit Lists

When you think emergency kits, don't just think winter weather. A vehicle emergency kit is something you should have in your vehicle year round. On this page we provide an essential items and cold weather items list that'll have you prepared for any situation. If you create your emergency kit now by using our tips and lists, you'll be ready for fall, winter, and beyond!

Before you head out to a fall-colors tour, a cider mill, or a pumpkin patch, make sure your car is ready to go with our Fall Car Care and routine maintenance tips from RiverTown Honda. We can help you take care of your car this season, no matter what kind of auto service you need, so you're ready for the weather that's ahead! You can conveniently schedule a service appointment online, or by giving our helpful team a call. You can also stop by our Express Service Lane without an appointment at your convenience. Make sure to check out our available coupons before coming in to see how you can save!

Best Honda Cars for College Kids

August 18, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Whether you're headed away to college at Michigan State or UofM, or are headed to college at Grand Valley or Davenport, you'll need some way to get there and some way to get around during the school year. We've got a few suggestions on how to do so in style! Honda makes many great fuel-efficient and affordable cars; some that we think are simply perfect for someone heading to college. Check out the best Honda cars for college kids below to learn more about what a Honda could provide your school experience!

1. The Honda Civic

MSRP: $19,615
MPG: 28 City / 40 Hwy

A classic college car! The Honda Civic has been around for decades, and has always been a reliable, affordable, efficient, small sedan - making it a very practical vehicle for a student. We bet you could walk around the parking lots of any college campus in the USA and find a handful of used Civics, but could you find as many new? The Honda Civic remains one of the most awarded and affordable cars Honda has to offer, but now includes sporty, modern, almost luxury style, plus the advanced technology features a college kid needs.

2. The Honda HR-V

MSRP: $19,465
MPG: 25 City / 33 Hwy

The category the HR-V falls into is named subcompact crossovers. This vehicle was released in 2015, a little ahead of its time, but has become one of the top players in the category! These types of cars are particularly favored for their crossover interior space and AWD capability along with their sedan driving style. The Honda HR-V is the option Goldilocks picks because it's "just right". The HR-V is great for getting around in the snow, toting college gear around, and for your wallet, too.

3. The Honda Fit

MSRP: $16,090
MPG: 29 City / 36 Hwy

Looking for more ways to simplify your life? The Honda Fit is a great way to do so. This subcompact sedan can carry much more than you would ever imagine, gets amazing gas mileage, and can fit (pun intended) in almost any parking spot around Grand Rapids. Subcompacts make great vehicles for college kids because of their accessibility and fuel efficiency, but that doesn't mean they're not fun! KBB has ranked the Honda Fit a Coolest Car Under $18k for at least two years in a row - not to mention it seats up to 5 so your friends can enjoy it, too.

Headed back to college this year or going for the first time? Let RiverTown help you get there with the best Honda cars for college kids! We have plenty of great offers happening during our Summerbration Sales Event through September 5th, like a 2017 Honda Fit for as low as $139/mo. If you're not in the market for a new car, we can help you keep your current car running well for the upcoming school year! Check out our service coupons and schedule a service appointment online. We look forward to helping you get ready to go back to school.

Routine Maintenance You Can Have Done in 90 Minutes or Less at RiverTown Honda

June 23, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––If you're a current customer of RiverTown Honda, you might understand how different our dealership is from the rest. If you're not, it's important you know that we truly care about your safety on the road and care about your personal time. We offer not only a recently expanded and comprehensive Service Center, but an Express Service Lane, too! At our Express Service Lane, you can arrive with or without an appointment, have services done quickly, and leave in a completely safe and well maintained vehicle. Take a look below to learn what auto services and routine maintenance you can have done in 90 minutes or less at RiverTown Honda, plus get info on why they're important, and when you should have them done!

Routine Maintenance You Can Have Done in 90 Minutes or Less at RiverTown Honda

Oil Changes

If you're a proud car owner, of any make and model, you know that oil changes are something that needs to be done to keep your car running. Why? Oil helps to lubricate your engines components, contains any contaminants that might enter your engine, and takes heat away from the engine. Your oil unfortunately expires, or becomes too thin or too dirty to do its job well. If you let it get too dirty, or don't follow the recommended oil change service schedule, you put your engine and its components at risk for unnecessary wear or damage, which can be costly. To take care of your engine properly, it's important to have your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles if you're using conventional or a synthetic blend oil.

Tire Rotations, Replacements, Repairs

Your tires are one of the most important components to inspect and maintain. Why? Because they're the main contact between your car and the road! They provide friction and grip that's needed to move down the road. Tire rotations should happen about every other oil change to protect your tires from uneven and premature wear and can be done quickly at our Service Center. Replacements and repairs need to happen less frequently, but can also be done in 90 minutes or less at Rivertowm Honda! Our team would be happy to inspect your tires for leaks and wear, fill your tires with the optimal amount of air, repair any punctures or leaks, OR help you choose and purchase a new set of tires when your old tires have become unsafe.

Wiper Blade Replacements & Wiper Fluid Fill-Ups

As simple as they may be to purchase and replace, your wiper blades are a component on your vehicle that have a significant impact on your safety! Your wiper blades, along with your wiper fluid should be able to clear your windshield of any dirt, gunk, or rain, clearly without streaks. So, why is this important to your safety? Your view of the road should be clear and visible all the way around, and having something in the way of that is simply a distraction that can cause you to drift lanes, not see other drivers or pedestrians, etc. At RiverTown Honda, our team would be happy to replace your front and rear wiper blades with quality parts, and fill up your wiper fluid tank so you're equipped to get rid of windshield gunk.

Wheel Alignments

Your wheels can become misaligned overtime from regular road and driving conditions. Things like potholes, curbs, and bumps in the road have the potential to knock your wheels out of alignment. Even if your wheels are minimally out of place, it can cause your car to work harder to move. A misalignment can cause your car to pull to one side when traveling straight, cause uneven tire wear, and can cause your vehicle to run less efficiently. This is a service that should be done about once a year or when you notice symptoms of a misalignment, takes a special machine to do, and can be done fairly quickly at RiverTown Honda!

Air Filter Replacements

During your oil change, we'll be sure to check and replace your air filter as needed! This can help to keep contaminants from the road out of your engine and keep your car running efficiently. Our experienced team can also inspect and replace your cabin air filter at your request. This isn't a service that needs to happen regularly, but is recommended for every 15,000-20,000 miles or about every year. This will help you breathe better in your car, by blocking airborne contaminants like pollen. This is especially important to have done if you live in a highly-populated area, or an area with poor air quality. You can have this service done at our Express Service lane in under 90 minutes at RiverTown Honda.

How RiverTown Honda Can Help You Save on Auto Service and Parts

January 20, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.––At RiverTown Honda, we know that finding a great deal is important when it comes to auto service, auto parts, and cay buying. We work hard to bring our customers in West Michigan an affordable and competitively priced service menu, along with many great offers for new Hondas. While you might find a deal in itself by having your car serviced at RiverTown Honda, we've got some more tips on ways to save money. Here's a few pointers on how RiverTown Honda can help you save on auto service and parts throughout the year!

How RiverTown Honda Can Help You Save on Auto Service and Parts

1. Consult Our Team of Service Experts

The auto experts in our Service Center are certified and able to work on any make and model, including your beloved Honda! If you think you need a specific auto service, or are having an issue with your vehicle, let us know. Unfortunately there are auto shops, even in West Michigan, that can perform service on your vehicle that you don't need. At RiverTown Honda, we'll take a look at your vehicle's health as a whole and recommend only the service you really need! Not to mention we'll also provide you various parts options so you can decide where you want to save. We'd also be happy to help you create a routine maintenance schedule.

2. Keep Up with Routine Maintenance

While it may seem counterintuitive, spending money on your car consistently throughout the year on things like oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections can help you SAVE in the long run. Keep up with routine maintenance will help you avoid larger repairs that can come from neglect and help you stay safe on the road. Just like many things, consistency is key with routine maintenance. You can map out a routine maintenance schedule and budget for it ahead of time. In fact, your HondaLink system can help keep you up to date on your car's performance and maintenance needs, too.

3. Utilize Our Service Coupons!

Did you know we offer a wide variety of service and parts coupons that can help you save? All you have to do to save on things like winterization services, Weather Tech floor mats, oil changes, tire rotations, battery installations, and more is head over to our website. On our coupons page, simply select the coupons you want to use, enter your information, and check your email shortly after where you'll receive the valid coupons to use at the time of your service.
