10 Crockpot Soups to Make This Winter

January 25, 2018 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich., –– It hasn't been looking like winter outside this week with the unusually warm temps, but it sure still feels like it. The flu has been taking an unfortunately big toll on families and individuals across West Michigan this season. When you start to feel down, be sure to rest up, get more sleep, drink more water, and feed your soul with some comforting food to make you feel better. We've come up with a list of 10 crockpot soups to make this winter, that'll have you getting off your comfy couch for a second helping, even when you're feeling as sick as a dog! Even better, these recipes are done by crockpot, meaning they're perfect for when you're coming home from a busy day at work or school.

Lovely Little Kitchen whipped this one up and thankfully blogged her recipe for us. This recipe involves cooking the chicken in the Crockpot, then preparing the sauce or base separately so it's super fresh when it's ready to serve.

2. Tomato Basil and Parmesan Soup

This one only takes 6.5 hours and is complete with mozzarella stuffed crescent rolls to dip with, all thanks to the Chunky Chef. This does require a blend or food processor for that smooth tomato soup consistency you know and love.

3. Slow Cooker Broccoli Cheese Soup

Thanks to Cooking Classy, this broccoli soup hits that classic comfort note. This is a true "cozy blanket and comfy couch" type soup after a long day. Not to mention this one is easy and cheesy!

4. Slow Cooker Skinny Loaded Potato Soup

The Cookie Rookie brings us this ultimate comfort soup. Everything you love in a loaded baked potato in a easy to make crockpot recipe with a little "bad" taken out. Even though it's labeled as skinny, no flavor is compromised here.

5. Crockpot Beef Stew

Alright, so this one is more a stew than a soup, but it'll warm you to your core. Thick, hearty, beefy and filled with yummy veggies make this an awesome recipe for winter thanks to Iowa Girl Eats.

6. Crockpot Chicken Gnocchi Soup

This back-to-basics, rustic, cozy soup is all thanks to Pinch of Yum. Featuring spinach, bacon, chicken, and gnocchi this soup will feel like anything but basic. It requires 4-5 hours in the crockpot and a slight amount of prep before serving.

7. Creamy Chicken Wild Rice Soup Slow Cooker

Little Spice Jar brings us this wonderful and creamy chicken and wild rice soup recipe. You might already have these ingredients on hand at home. This one features wild rice, carrots, celery, onions, and chicken. Yum!

8. Slow Cooker Chicken Pot Pie Soup

If any dish says down-home comfort, it's a chicken pot pie. This soup takes that dish and turns it into a soup, sure to cure any winter blues. Thanks to the Gunny Sack, this recipe is really easy and done completely in your slow cooker.

9. Crockpot French Onion Soup

Cheesy, steamy, and oniony this one is a winner. The Dashing Dish brings us this crockpot version of the famous soup in a wonderful and easy way. Caramelizing the onions before putting everything into the crockpot is what really makes the flavor standout.

10. Crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup

Of course we wouldn't finish this list without including the all-time favorite, classic chicken noodle by Pip and Debby. This one takes 7-8 hours on slow or 3-4 on high and covers all the bases of comfort.

Hopefully this list of 10 Crockpot soups to make this winter has you feeling warm and fuzzy already. If you or your family members are sick with the flu, we hope you take time to rest and give your body the TLC it needs! Winter Car Care and Routine Auto Maintenance Tips from RiverTown Honda

January 12, 2018 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.––The bitter cold temperatures, the heavy snow fall and lake effect snow, and ice along the backroads can all make Michigan winters a pain to deal with. Whether you like the winter or not, driving in inclement weather can be scary, and even scarier in a car that's not equipped for it. If you're a Michigander, chances are there are some small steps you took to make dealing with winter driving easier like putting an ice scraper in your car, creating an emergency kit, and maybe even having winter tires put on your vehicle. We're here to help keep you safe on the road, help you deal with winter on the road, and keep your car running well through the cold weather with Winter Car Care and routine auto maintenance tips from RiverTown Honda.

Winter Car Care and Routine Auto Maintenance Tips from RiverTown Honda

We've got some informative pages on our website that highlight the components on your car necessary to take care of during the winter season because of their safety factor, complete with tips on how to do so and advice that'll help you extend the life of your vehicle! Explore these Winter Car Care pages by clicking the links below and let our team of auto experts at RiverTown Honda know if you have any questions.

Tire Inspection and Installation

Maintaining the health and longevity of your tires consists of inspection, inflation, and rotation. During the winter, these tasks are especially important. If your tires aren't inflated enough, or are lacking in tread wear, they may not be able to provide the traction you need. Check this page out for how to take care of your tires, check out our "should you invest in winter tires?" page for more information that might help with your next tire purchase.

Battery Tests and Replacements

Although this is a simple part of routine maintenance, this is a critical part to dealing with winter driving. Have you ever gone outside in the morning only to find that your car won't start immediately? It could be because of your battery! Check this page to learn about when to replace your battery and how cold weather affects it.

Brake Inspections

Your brakes are what allow your car to stop - simple as that. Without properly working brakes in snowy and icy conditions, you're putting your safety at risk. There are ways you can ensure they have enough stopping power throughout the year by having inspections done and service as needed. See this page for more information and signs you need brake service.

Oil Changes

Oil changes are an integral part of routine maintenance year-round, but are especially important in the winter. As the weather gets colder, your car works harder to run. To ensure your engine is running well an oil inspection and regular oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles is necessary. See this page for more oil change tips and schedule your next $24.95 oil change online!

Wiper Blade Replacements

These two rubber blades are responsible for keeping your view of the road clear. This is especially important to your safety this winter because of the snow, ice, and dirty slush that can cloud your windshield. It's also a good idea to have your washer fluid topped off. Learn more about wiper blade replacements and fluid top offs at RiverTown Honda on this page and our routine maintenance pages.

With these Winter Car Care and routine auto maintenance tips, you've got the tools to safely drive through the cold weather season. See our website for more seasonal maintenance tips and schedule your auto service online. Our team at RiverTown Honda is more than happy to help you find the perfect vehicle and take care of it throughout your time of ownership. It's our goal to provide you the best dealership experience of your life!

How to Host a Holiday Movie Night

December 01, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Now that it's finally December, it's time to get in the Holiday spirit! With all the stress of gift buying, decorating, baking, etc., sometimes you just want to sit back and relax. A movie binge is the perfect way to do so. Plus, what's better than snuggling up with your friends, family, and loved ones to watch a good flick when it's cold outside?! Here are a few tips on How to Host a Holiday Movie Night:

1. Set Your Movie Lineup

How to Host a Holiday Movie Night

Pick 2-3 movies that you and your guests will watch together. If you're doing a movie night with adults or friends, feel free to mix it up a little bit. For instance, many people out there consider Die Hard a Christmas movie. If you're doing a movie night with the kids, we recommend you stick to ones that center around the Holidays. Here are some family-friendly recommendations:

-Elf
-The Polar Express
-A Charlie Brown Christmas
-How the Grinch Stole Christmas
-Home Alone
-The Muppet Christmas Carol
-A Christmas Story
-Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
-Miracle on 34th Street

2. Get Your Snuggling Supplies Together

How to Host a Holiday Movie Night

Gather lots of warm throw blankets from around the house (wash/dry if need be) and make a pile your guests can pick and choose from. If you have extra pillows you feel comfortable letting your guests use, gather those up, too! If you're willing, purchase a large pack of fuzzy socks to hand out to your movie watchers to keep their feet toasty warm - this can act as a party favor they can take home and use for the rest of the season.

3. Set the Mood

How to Host a Holiday Movie Night

It's important to make your space feel cozy and movie-watching-ready. Dim the lights, or turn them all off. If you have a fireplace and it's safe to do so, light it! You could also light a few candles, or even fake candles, and place them around the room. We recommend using Holiday scented candles like Frosted Sugar Cookie, Pine Tree Forest, etc. Make sure there are minimal distractions that can take away from the movie!

4. Create a Snack Bar!

How to Host a Holiday Movie Night

Your snack bar can be as complicated or as simple as you'd like depending on your crowd size and how long they'll be staying. If you're going simple, we recommend popcorn and hot chocolate! If you're going complicated, pick a few ideas from the list below. It's all up to you, but just be sure to remember paper plates, lots of napkins, and any cups or mugs for drinks. Also, be prepared for any spills if food is going to be taken to the couch. Try these tasty appetizer and drink ideas:

-S'mores Dessert Mix with Popcorn
-Pepperoni Cheese Stick Roll-Ups
-Peanut Butter M&M Blondies
-Turkey, Bacon, Ranch Pinwheels
-Circus Animal Popcorn
-Buffalo Chicken Dip
-Slowcooker Gingerbread Latte
-Nutella Hot Chocolate
-Sparkling Cran-Raspberry Punch
-Eggnog Milkshake

We hope you have the tools to host a fun Holiday movie night with your family and friends. If it goes well, you could even make it a tradition! If you're in need of more ways to have fun with your family this season in Grand Rapids, check out our Holiday Guide. There, you'll find more information on unique places to shop for gifts, the best Honda vehicles for driving in West Michigan Winter weather, fun events to attend, great organizations to donate to, and Winter driving tips.

How to Use Your Leftover Halloween Candy

November 08, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Halloween has quickly come and gone. Now many of us are stuck with extra candy. While this may be exciting for your kids, it's not always the best option to just let them eat it all. There are plenty of fun ways you can put your excess treats to use this holiday season! See a few ideas on how to use your leftover Halloween candy below and get creative.

How to Use Your Leftover Halloween Candy

1. Store it in your car for a quick sugar fix!

Put your favorites in a small Ziploc bag in your center console or glove box and treat yourself to a little sugar fix. This especially comes in handy for handling the chaos of Christmas shopping. You can also keep the baggy in your purse to reward your kids with good behavior while you're running errands.

2. Make candy cookies for your Holiday guests

Remember those oh-so-delightful peanut butter blossom cookies that dominate the Holiday season? Instead of the chocolate Kiss, use a bite size piece of candy. Try this recipe from Betty Crocker. If your kids of guests have peanut allergies, try this recipe from Cha Ching Queen.

3. Use it as a teaching tool with built-in rewards

Whether math is your child's or children's favorite subject or not, they'll enjoy solving problems with candy. You can also It's a different, more interactive way to do math and they can be rewarded with a sweet treat when they solve a problem correctly. Check out these fun activities you can do at home.

4. Host a Fall/Winter bonfire & make candy s'mores

Have you tried a s'more with a bite size piece of candy instead of plain chocolate? We highly recommend giving it a go the next time you have a bonfire with friends and family. Too cold to host a bonfire outside? Try toasting your marshmallows over a gas stove OR purchase an indoors s'more maker like this one for $20 from Target.

5. Save it for Gingerbread House decorating

Even though most kits come with candy to decorate with, you can use your own candy. Have it as a backup or just go crazy with decorating the gingerbread house and landscaping! Having some extra candy will allow the kids to enjoy a few bites as they decorate.

6. Donate it to Operation Gratitude

There are plenty of ways to donate in your community, and giving candy back to our troops is one of them! Through the 2017 Operation Gratitude Halloween Candy GIVE-back, you can drop your wrapped, unopened candy donations to the Academy of Music of Grand Rapids (the closest drop off location to Grandville). Search for other drop-off locations online or make a donation by mail!

7. Make an art piece or Christmas gift

Get creative and "style" your candy. Try gluing pieces on a poster board or canvas in a fun pattern. Make a scene with various candies on the kitchen table. Make a fun bouquet of candy to give as a gift. Use the wrappers to make jewelry or other types of art. The possibilities are truly endless.

8. Store it in the freezer

If you have a recipe you'd like to try that involves pieces of candy like a milkshake, cookies, etc. or you just want to have some candy around for when you really need a sweet pick-me-up, you can store it away in the freezer. You can safely store and consume candy in a Ziploc freezer bag, for up to a year!

You can always scrap these leftover Halloween candy ideas and keep it all for yourself - just make sure to hide it well enough from the kids! We hope you had a safe and happy Halloween this year, and wish you an even happier Holiday season. We want to help you enjoy this Fall and Winter to the fullest, so make sure to check out our Winter Car Care tips and have your vehicle inspected and serviced before the snow arrives.
