5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Your Kids

April 27, 2018 0
5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Your Kids

GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- Cinco de Mayo is an all-out celebration of Mexican culture in the United States and even some other countries like Japan who use the day to celebrate Latin-American culture as a whole. In Spanish, it is known as "El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla" (the Day of the Battle of Puebla),  and the holiday commemorates Mexico's unlikely victory over the French on May 5th, 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War. While it's a minor holiday in Mexico itself, Mexican-Americans use the day as day to celebrate their culture and heritage.

For parents, the holiday is a great opportunity to educate your kids about Mexican culture and have them experience all it has to offer for themselves, and we at RiverTown Honda have put together a list of 5 fun activities to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your kids.

5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Your Kids

1. LEARN SOME SPANISH

Starting your kids early learning a second language can be very beneficial to their mental and social development, as bilingual children have been shown to possess better critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as greater mental flexibility and mindfulness of those from different cultural backgrounds. Spanish is not only one of the easiest languages for a native English-speaker to learn, but it's also one of the most practical, as it is spoken by over 400 million people making it the world's second most spoken language, as well as an official national language of 21 countries including the United States.

Similarly to English, Spanish has roots in Latin. When you start to dive a little into the language, you'll find that there are actually a lot of familiar-sounding words, Americans sometimes even use Spanish words as part of our everyday slang without even thinking about it! Additionally, Spanish is a phonetic language, meaning that the words are often pronounced how they're spelled making it easy to sound them out.

There are tons of resources out there to learn Spanish with your kids, like apps for your tablet or smartphone and educational websites on the Internet that often offer videos and practice exercises. You could also get a little artsy by giving your child a word like "gato" (cat) or "perro" (dog) and having them draw a picture of it with the Spanish word written underneath. This will help facilitate learning as having pictures in their head with which to associate their new vocabulary makes things easier.

2. SET UP A TACO BAR

While the exact origin of the taco is unknown, some historians theorize roots in the Mexican silver mines in the 18th century, when the word referred to small explosive charges used for excavation, consisting of gunpowder wrapped in paper. Another theory states that it comes from the Nauhatl (the language spoken by the indigenous Aztec people) "tlahco", meaning "half" or "in the middle", which makes sense given the food's preparation and presentation.

Regardless of how they came to be, tacos are a traditional Mexican cultural food enjoyed in many countries, and no Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without them! Add an educational aspect by labeling each ingredient, and facilitate discussion in Spanish by using these phrases:

  • ¿Qué pusiste en tu taco? (What did you put in your taco?)
  • ¿Cuál es el ingrediente más importante en un taco? (What do you think is the most important ingredient in a taco?)
  • ¿Cuál es tu ingrediente de taco menos favorito? (What is your least favorite taco ingredient?)

3. MEXICAN HAT DANCE

"El Jarabe Tapatio", aka the Mexican Hat Dance, is a traditional cultural dance originating in Mexico, but also popular in other countries such as Cuba, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. It's also a fun and interactive way to expose your kids to Latin-American culture! You could also incorporate an arts & crafts element to it by creating homemade maracas, a traditional Mexican instrument, to use in the dance.

4. PAPER BAG PINATAS

It isn't a true Mexican celebration without a pinata. Although making one the traditional way will more than likely end up with you running up to Party City to grab one that's already made. Instead, give these super easy DIY paper bag pinatas a try!

5. LEARN ABOUT MEXICAN HISTORY

Given the origins of Cinco de Mayo, there's no better way to celebrate than to educate your kids on the history of Mexico. There are tons of kid-friendly resources online to utilize, as well as historical picture books. Much like bilingual children, those who are exposed to a culture and history different from their own benefit greatly both socially and mentally with reinforced values of acceptance, open-mindedness, and compassion.

Cinco de Mayo is a fun holiday celebrating the vibrant culture of Mexico, and a great time to educate your kids with these 5 fun activities. We at RiverTown Honda wish you and your family a happy, safe, and most importantly fun May the 5th! Additionally, as you're beginning to enjoy the warmer weather this spring, make sure your vehicle is running in top condition so that you can take trips to the park, the lake, around town, or a weekend getaway up north. Tips for Traveling with a Crew

    March 01, 2018 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Spring break is coming up quickly and many families might be considering taking a trip. If you have little ones and a road trip is on the docket, it's time to start getting ready. Kids can make any sort of travel complicated, but a long road trip downright hectic if you're not prepared. We've got some tips that'll help you have a fun and safe road trip with your little ones, no matter where you're going. Check out our tips for traveling with a crew below and use them on your spring break road trip.

Tips for Traveling with a Crew

    1. Inspect Your Car

Before anything else, you'll want to make sure your vehicle is in good shape to hit the road, because the last thing you want to deal with is being stuck on the side of the road with car troubles and impatient children. Things that should be inspected before you go include your oil level, tires, wiper fluid, and of course, your gas tank level. If you bring your car into RiverTown Honda for an oil change before your trip, we'll be sure to give your vehicle a thorough inspection to help you avoid any potential mishaps! Make sure to fill up your tank before you leave as well, or as you head out of town so you don't have to deal with finding a station in a potentially unfamiliar area.

    2. Stock the Car with Necessary Emergency Items

Every individual and family is different, but there are some basic items you should always have in your car should you have to deal with car troubles on the road. Extra change or money, jumper cables, a tire pump, a flashlight, a blanket, extra cell phone charger, and a first aid kit are what we consider necessary items. Other items you might want to consider bringing include extra medication, hats or sunscreen, a trash can or trash bags, extra water bottles, and whatever else you need to keep your kids comfy, healthy, and safe.

    3. Bring Snacks!

What would a road trip be without some good snacks? If you've ever run into someone who gets "hangry" or hungry and angry, like a toddler for instance, you'll understand why snacks are so important! You can either stop at a gas station before heading out of town, or stock up with what you have at home. Most times, you can bring along smarter, more healthy snacks that'll keep you full by using what you have at home, as opposed to buying sugar-filled junk food items at the gas station or convenience store. See our 7 on-the-go kids snacks to get some homemade snack ideas and get inspired to create your own! Don't forget to also bring plenty of beverages to stay hydrated, but be careful to ration these items, otherwise your driver will be stopping often for bathroom breaks.

    4. Prepare Entertainment

If you're taking a trip with just adults you might be able to skip this step, but with children, this step is absolutely necessary. In many newer vehicles, especially family based ones like the 2018 Honda Odyssey, entertainment is plenty with the back seat screen for movies and shows, wifi, and the group playlist feature. In older vehicles, you might have to supply the entertainment yourself. Find fun material-free road games you can play together, bring along handheld game consoles, or make road-trip ready activity bags or kits with the ideas on our Road Trip Tips Pinterest board!

    5. Keep Things Organized

If you're taking a short road trip or a long road trip, do your best to keep things organized as you go. This can help you easily access emergency items when needed, not worry about cleaning up a mess when you arrive, and help you get home in a vehicle that doesn't resemble a garbage can. Keep everyone's luggage or items in the same areas, offer items like a bag for garbage or recyclables and storage solutions for small items, and carry along supplies for any spills or messes that need immediate cleaning. This will also help you avoid turning back in your seat a million times because your little ones can't find what they need!

    6. Plan Fun Stops to Break Up a Long Trip

Taking a longer trip with little ones? Make sure to plan some fun stops to break up the long periods of sitting. If you're a parent, you know it's no fun to be dealing with a temper tantrum or fussiness in the confines of a car or minivan. Of course, you'll need to stop for the bathroom and meals here and there, but some extra stops along the way can help diffuse the growing crankiness. Stopping at a rest stop and taking a quick walk or playing a game of tag, as long as the weather permits, might help to get out some of that pent up energy. You could also plan for a longer trip and make some educational stops like for tourist sights, museums, etc.

We hope these tips for traveling with a crew give you all the necessary tools for a stress-free road trip and memorable spring break vacation! If you need assistance in inspecting your vehicle or with an oil change before you leave town, stop by our Express Service Lane for routine maintenance services in 90 minutes or less. You can save big just by coming to RiverTown Honda, and even more by utilizing our service coupons.

Best Honda Cars for College Kids

    August 18, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Whether you're headed away to college at Michigan State or UofM, or are headed to college at Grand Valley or Davenport, you'll need some way to get there and some way to get around during the school year. We've got a few suggestions on how to do so in style! Honda makes many great fuel-efficient and affordable cars; some that we think are simply perfect for someone heading to college. Check out the best Honda cars for college kids below to learn more about what a Honda could provide your school experience!

    1. The Honda Civic

    MSRP: $19,615
    MPG: 28 City / 40 Hwy

A classic college car! The Honda Civic has been around for decades, and has always been a reliable, affordable, efficient, small sedan - making it a very practical vehicle for a student. We bet you could walk around the parking lots of any college campus in the USA and find a handful of used Civics, but could you find as many new? The Honda Civic remains one of the most awarded and affordable cars Honda has to offer, but now includes sporty, modern, almost luxury style, plus the advanced technology features a college kid needs.

    2. The Honda HR-V

    MSRP: $19,465
    MPG: 25 City / 33 Hwy

The category the HR-V falls into is named subcompact crossovers. This vehicle was released in 2015, a little ahead of its time, but has become one of the top players in the category! These types of cars are particularly favored for their crossover interior space and AWD capability along with their sedan driving style. The Honda HR-V is the option Goldilocks picks because it's "just right". The HR-V is great for getting around in the snow, toting college gear around, and for your wallet, too.

    3. The Honda Fit

    MSRP: $16,090

Looking for more ways to simplify your life? The Honda Fit is a great way to do so. This subcompact sedan can carry much more than you would ever imagine, gets amazing gas mileage, and can fit (pun intended) in almost any parking spot around Grand Rapids. Subcompacts make great vehicles for college kids because of their accessibility and fuel efficiency, but that doesn't mean they're not fun! KBB has ranked the Honda Fit a Coolest Car Under $18k for at least two years in a row - not to mention it seats up to 5 so your friends can enjoy it, too.

Firework Safety Tips for the Fourth of July Weekend

    June 27, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and now is the time to prepare! Because the Fourth falls on a Tuesday, that leaves many families with a long weekend for traveling, relaxing, and setting off fireworks to celebrate the holiday. It can be nerve wracking to do fireworks at home with little ones and pets around, because they can be loud and dangerous. There are some basic firework safety tips you and your family can follow for the Fourth of July weekend to keep everyone safe and happy.

Firework Safety Tips for the Fourth of July Weekend

    1. Light One Firework at a Time

While you may want to set them all off at one time for a grand spectacle, it's better to be safe and light one at a time. This will allow you the time you need to move away from the lit firework quickly, and your crowd the chance to enjoy each and every firework!

    2. Light Fireworks Away from Your Home

If possible, take your fireworks to the backyard or a nearby open field to reduce risk of fires or other accidents. The further you can light fireworks from your house or other buildings, the better! Make sure your audience is sitting far away from where the fireworks are being lit as well.

    3.  Only Allow Adults to Light Fireworks

It can be tempting to let your children help with lighting the fireworks because it's exciting and you want them to be involved. You can avoid the risk of injury by only allowing adults to light the fireworks. Even little fireworks like bang snaps and sparklers can be dangerous for little ones to handle.

    4. Never Re-Light Dud Fireworks

If you light a firework only to find out it's a dud, leave it be. You can either throw it in your water bucket or let it rest where it landed to make sure it's safe. Either way, there was something wrong with the dud in the first place and it could cause you more danger to try and make it work.

    5. Keep Your Pets in a Quiet Place Throughout the Weekend

Pets have sensitive hearing and can often become anxious with fireworks or other loud noises. Wherever you travel this weekend, be kind and provide your pet a safe, quiet place for them to be. You can also try using a Thunder Shirt or lavender paw balm to help calm nervous pets.

    6. Never Bring Your Pets to a Firework Show

You may want to share an awesome firework show with your furry friends, but again, it can be anxiety inducing and very scary for them. Do your best to make them feel comfortable, safe, and loved and never bring them to a firework show.

    7. Keep a Metal Bucket and Plenty of Water Handy

If you're lighting your own fireworks at home, even small ones, keep a metal bucket and plenty of water handy. Use the metal bucket to put firework remains or duds in, and use the water to douse hot fireworks or sparklers as needed.

    8. Go to a Local Fireworks Show!

You can let the professionals handle the fireworks, and enjoy a big show by attending a local fireworks show. There's one right in Grandville on the 4th of July at the Middle School at Dark! There will also be other fun activities in the City of Grandville for you and the family to enjoy this weekend.

We hope these firework safety tips for the Fourth of July weekend help keep you, your family, and your pets safe and happy this holiday! If you're traveling for the holiday, make sure to have your oil changed, tires inspected, and fluids topped off before you leave. We can help with all of this and more at RiverTown Honda. Check our available coupons, and stop by our Express Service Lane with or without an appointment for services in 90 minutes or less.
