Volkswagen announces Beetle Final Edition for 2019

September 14, 2018 0

Special models celebrate Beetle’s rich heritage as third-generation is set to end production in 2019
Herndon, VA (September 13, 2018) — Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that it will end production of the iconic Beetle in 2019. To celebrate the Beetle’s rich heritage, two special models will join the lineup for its last model year—Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL.

“The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ—which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus—I would also say, ‘Never say never.’ We’re excited to kick off a year of celebrating one of the true icons of the automotive world, with a series of events that will culminate in the end of production in Puebla in July 2019.”
Available in coupe and convertible body styles, the Final Edition models include exclusive equipment and unique upscale décor elements designed to send the Beetle off in style. Models also draw inspiration from the first-generation Beetle’s final run in Mexico, where the vehicle is assembled.
The 2003 Última Edición (last edition) models were only available in two colors—beige and light blue. Today’s Final Edition models will feature two unique colors: Safari Uni—a reinvention of Harvest Moon Beige, a color from the New Beetle—and Stonewashed Blue, a nod to the 1970 Jeans Bug and most recently seen on the 2016 Beetle Denim. Final Edition models are also available in Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Platinum Grey. Convertible Final Edition SEL models in every exterior color except Safari Uni are available with a unique Brown soft top.
Final Edition coupe models feature standard chrome treatments like the Última Edición models, in addition to body-color side mirrors, heated washer nozzles (all standard features across the Beetle Convertible lineup), as well as a sunroof. Final Edition SEL models are equipped with Bi-Xenon® headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), LED taillights, and fog lights. All Final Edition models replace the typical “Turbo” badge on the tailgate with a “Beetle” badge.
Unique wheels complete the exterior transformation of Beetle Final Edition models. Final Edition SE models feature 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design. Final Edition SEL models are shod with 18-inch white aluminum-alloy wheels in a disc design that is reminiscent of the Última Edición’s body-colored steel wheels fitted with chrome hubcaps and whitewall tires.
Inside, all Final Edition models are equipped with standard KESSY® keyless access with push-button start, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with unique “Beetle” clip, stainless steel pedal caps, Climatronic® automatic climate control, gloss black center console, a unique Safari Uni color dashpad with the classic kaeferfach glovebox or “Beetle bin” that harkens to the color-matched interior treatments in the Última Edición, and three-color ambient lighting. Final Edition SE models feature cloth and leatherette rhombus-pattern seats, while SEL models offer standard diamond-stitched leather seating surfaces.
Final Edition SE models feature a Composition Media infotainment unit with a 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, Bluetooth® technology for compatible devices, USB multimedia port, SiriusXM® radio (three-month trial subscription), Voice Control, and Volkswagen Car-Net® App-Connect smartphone integration. Final Edition SEL models upgrade to Discover Media infotainment with navigation, Car-Net Security & Service, and Guide & Inform, as well as Fender® Premium Audio.
All 2019 Beetle models, both convertible and coupe, are powered a 2.0 liter TSI® engine that puts out 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. All models are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and the EPA-estimated fuel economy rating is 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined.
To meet the demands of American drivers, all Beetle Final Edition models offer driver-assistance technology. SE models include standard Blind Spot Monitor Rear Traffic Alert. Final Edition SEL models add standard front and rear Park Distance Control.
Pricing for the 2019 Beetle Final Edition coupe starts at $23,045 for SE models and $25,995 for SEL models. Beetle Convertible Final Edition pricing starts at $27,295 for SE models and $29,995 for SEL models. The destination charge for all Beetle models is an additional $895.

The Love Bug: Volkswagen Australia's Valentine's Day gift to staff and fans

February 15, 2018 0

  • Original 1951 split-screen Beetle unveiled at Volkswagen Australia headquarters in Chullora
  • Volkswagen MD, Michael Bartsch, unveils surprise museum piece in the presence of staff and former and original owners

Sydney: Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) Managing Director, Michael Bartsch, has today unveiled a rare and unique gift to the Volkswagen community – an original, German-produced and NSW-registered 1951 Beetle, believed to have been produced prior to the introduction of right-hand drive – in a packed, Volkswagen Love-themed event at Volkswagen Australia's headquarters in front of staff, dealership partners and international guests.

Best of all, also in attendance at the 'love-fest' was the previous owner of 'The Little Car', Volkswagen enthusiast and collector, Andy Roberts and his family, and Dieter Regel, son of the original owner of the Beetle, who had the car produced in Stuttgart in right-hand drive configuration and shipped to Australia when his family emigrated in the early 1950s.

Both Mr. Roberts and Mr. Regel spoke to guests about the Little Car's amazing local history in what became quite an emotional moment for both men.

Mr. Bartsch, who had personally secured the vehicle late in 2017 and had kept the Little Car's arrival a closely-guarded secret until today, spoke of the significance the little blue Beetle has not just for Volkswagen in Australia, but for himself personally.

"I was first brought home from the hospital as a baby in a Volkswagen, and for as long as I can remember, my family has always had a Volkswagen in it," Mr Bartsch said.
"Bringing this amazing vehicle home to VGA has brought me great joy; and to me, is a part of the legacy I'd like to leave for the company," he continued.

The pristine Beetle, the first piece in a planned museum collection of historic Volkswagens, is now on display in Volkswagen's headquarters in Chullora, where it will remain permanently for all to see. Fans and customers alike are invited to visit VGA and see the Beetle in the metal, and learn more of its amazing history in Australia.

Vintage Friday: Meet the millionaires OR from the gold Beetle to the blue Golf.

August 24, 2017 0

The 150 millionth car built by Volkswagen since production began some 72 years ago rolled off the assembly line on August 24, 2017. The anniversary vehicle – a Golf GTE* – marks the start of the movement towards e-mobility and service provider for mobility in general.

Flashback: the day is overcast, rainclouds scud across the land, but here and there the sun is peeping through the clouds. It is the morning of August 5th, 1955, and a buzz of excitement banishes the morning chill. This is a day of celebration at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. Almost ten years after production started, about 150,000 guests from home and abroad, celebrities and politicians, managers and employees, jostle through the streets of the city, heading for the factory – to celebrate the one millionth Volkswagen.

Dressed up in gold today
This is the decade of the economic miracle. The post-war era stands for a new beginning and economic momentum in the still young Federal Republic of Germany. This era is shaped so deeply by one particular car – the Volkswagen Beetle – that the paintwork of the anniversary model glitters in gold metallic. Hardly anyone around Managing Director Heinrich Nordhoff on that day could have looked so far into the future as to know that the Beetle would break several more records and celebrate several more anniversaries. All in all, 21 million of this much-loved small car were built before the production line was finally closed in Mexico in 2003.

More than 21.5 million Beetle were sold, making it the world's bestselling car until it was overtaken by the VW Golf in June 2002.

Joachim Lattke was one of those taking part in the celebrations. Now aged 81, the motor journalist worked on the Volkswagen assembly line in Production Hall 12. The money he earned went to financing his engineering studies later on. "The mood was euphoric and we were all incredibly proud of this achievement. After all, it was the first time in Germany that anyone had built so many cars. Delegations from dealer organizations all over the world had came to Wolfsburg: Brazil, South Africa, the UK, or even the Netherlands – it was a fabulous party. For us as employees, we never imagined the Beetle would turn into a multi-million bestseller, but we definitely knew that the future belonged to this car."

Contemporary witness Joachim Lattke (see circle) watching the one millionth Volkswagen leave the assembly line in 1955.

A class of its own
What followed was the unparalleled success story. This was one of many occasions when the car manufacturer celebrated its plants, its people, its models and its engines. While it took almost ten years to sell one million Volkswagen Beetle in the post-war period, the Beetle's successor – the Golf – topped the million mark in just two years from the start of production in 1974.

But the Golf did need until 2002 to beat the Beetle sales record of 21 million. More than 135,000 employees celebrated 25 million Volkswagen Golf at a mega-party at the Wolfsburg plant. Volkswagen is currently building the seventh generation of the bestseller, and has sold more than 37.6 million Golf worldwide. Right from the start, the Golf set the bar in its class high – so it is hardly surprising that over the years, the compact segment has gained a second name: the "Golf class".

From the factory in Wolfsburg to all four corners of the world: today, the Volkswagen Passengers Cars are being sold in more than 150 markets. More than 50 production facilities are being operated in 14 countries. While there was only one bestseller once, the Beetle, to start with, this number has since grown by leaps and bounds: Golf, Tiguan, Jetta or Passat have captured many markets. Quite frequently they are also at the top of the registration statistics. But what would all these records be worth without the people who helped make them? Today, Volkswagen has a headcount of 196,000, with a further 74,000 on the payroll at over 7,700 dealerships.

The 100 millionth Volkswagen has been built: A Touran with a 1.9 Liter TDI-engine. As a donation, Former Volkswagen CEO Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder hands the keys on the very same day in Berlin to Eva Luise Köhler (left). She is the wife of the head of state and patron to a charity organization for rare chronic illnesses. Anne Kreiling (right), also from this charity organization.

Success models
And it is each and every one of these employees, who contributed his share to this darkblue Golf GTE, with the nine digits on the liscence plate. And of course to all the other models which were built world wide so far: Polo, Tiguan, Passat, and co. If you would line them up all in a row, it would span the globe sixteen times!

In his words of welcome at the Volkswagen brand's celebrations to mark this special anniversary, Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand and member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, said a special thank you to employees for their service to the company and their long-standing loyalty. "You give your very best every day to build our Volkswagen. You show enormous commitment and dedication – I have great respect for your achievements."

A symbol for a new era
As has been in the past, each record and every anniversary offer an opportunity to adjust the course of this global player. After internationalization and mass production, the 1980s saw expansion to become a multi-brand network. The turn of the millennium brought globalization and evolution into a mobility group. Now, Volkswagen is once again taking a bold step towards a new future: e-mobility.

With the anniversary car, the blue Golf GTE, Volkswagen shows a symbol for clean and low-emission mobility. "We intend to take the lead in the new world of mobility, too," a confident Diess states. And he shows his pride: "We have strong products. We know our goal. And we have the best team anyone could imagine."

Perfect Weekend for Scott Speed wraps up Red Bull Global Rallycross Manufacturer’s Championship for Volkswagen

August 14, 2017 0

Two race wins across the Atlantic City weekend put Scott Speed back in control of the driver’s championship standings and clinched a second manufacturer’s championship for Volkswagen.

Herndon, VA  — Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross’s Scott Speed was unstoppable in Atlantic City this weekend, claiming victory in two races at the Bader Field circuit and reclaiming control of his championship destiny with a nearly perfect haul of points. The double triumph also secured Volkswagen’s second, consecutive manufacturer’s championship in the series, making it only the second automaker to win multiple championship titles.

Speed set sail from the outset of the weekend with the quickest time in qualifying for Race 1 on Saturday morning. His one bobble of the weekend came in the second round of Heats on Saturday, where the No. 41 Oberto Circle K Beetle GRC driver finished second.

“This was an incredibly important race weekend for us, and we walked out of Atlantic City with about the best result we could have hoped for,” said Speed. “The Beetle GRC is on rails, and it’s a testament to this crew and how hard we’ve all worked to build a super competitive race team.”
While Speed won the first Final of the weekend, his journey to the checkered flag was anything but easy. A pileup at the first corner shuffled the running order and Speed had to set out in chase of the race leaders. He made a thrilling pass for the lead with just two laps to go and earned his first winner’s trophy of the weekend in one of the season’s most exciting races so far.

Sunday was a more routine setting for the reigning series champion. Speed again was quickest in qualifying and controlled each of his races from the front of the pack, earning wins in every event and maximum trove of points.

While Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammate Tanner Foust was also at the quick end of the field, he fell victim to a number of unlucky incidents that prevented him from enjoying an equally successful weekend.

Foust started beside his teammate in Saturday’s Final, but the first lap contact between the field of ten drivers forced the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle GRC to stop on course.
Contact was the only constant variable throughout Sunday’s running and Foust found himself involved in much of it. The carnage would not allow Foust any clear running and he was stuck fighting with slower cars on the tough Bader Field circuit.

“With ten cars on such a tight track, there’s bound to be contact, but this was a particularly difficult weekend for some reason,” said Foust. “We’ll move on to the next round and look to bounce back.”
With his near-perfect weekend in Atlantic City, Speed reclaimed the lead in the championship standings. He also retook the title of winningest driver in Red Bull Global Rallycross history from Foust, an accolade they have traded all season. With three races remaining in 2017, Volkswagen clinched its second manufacturer’s championship title. With six wins from nine races so far this season, the Beetle GRC has once again proved to be the car to beat and Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross as the series’ strongest team this year.

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross will return to action next month for another doubleheader in Seattle on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10. Broadcasts of the event will air LIVE on NBC each day at 4:30PM (ET).
