Show Your Honda Some Love this Valentine's Day

February 06, 2018 0
Show Your Honda Some Love this Valentine's Day

GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Valentine's Day is all about LOVE. It's just another day to some, a special holiday to others, or for some, just an excuse to do something special with your loved one. But, what about your car? It deserves some love, too! It gets you and your passengers from point A to point B in comfort. It's an important part of your best memories. It's there when you need it most. And most of the time, hopefully, it doesn't complain or give you trouble. Have we convinced you to give your Honda to the special treatment this February? Show your Honda some love this Valentine's Day with our tips:

1. Treat your Honda to a nice wash & wax
With all the nasty snow, ice, and salt, your Honda could use a nice trip through the wash. A wash will help it looks good, but make sure go all out for your Honda and protect your paint with a higher wash package that includes wax or some sort of weather-protect ingredient.

2. Give your Honda's interior a good clean-up
Whether you're a tidy driver or a messy one, the interior of your Honda could use a good wipe down and clean-up. Get rid of all the trash, wipe down the surfaces with anti-bacterial cleaner, and give it a good vacuum. Don't feel like doing all that? Check out our detailing packages & services menu.

3. Freshen up the cabin air
There's nothing better than getting into a good smelling car! You AND your passengers can appreciate an interior that smells fresh and clean, rather than dirty shoes or fast food. If your interior is really smelly, try sticking an absorbing freshener in your cup holder or under your seats.

4. Consider buying your Honda some new shoes
By new shoes, we mean new tires. Whether you get new all-seasons or winter tires, it's an expensive purchase (especially since it's better to purchase all 4 at the same time), but it's well worth your safety and your car's functionality. Take some time to consider your tire options & create a budget that works for you. We can help!

5. Put in some fitting floor mats to protect the carpet
All seasons come with some sort of mess, like mud, road salt, or fallen leaves, that can be hard to keep out of your car's interior. Make it easier to clean up and protect your Honda's carpet with some custom-fitted, or well-fitting rubber floor mats. Give us a call to see what we have in stock or check out Weather Tech, a fan favorite!

6. Make it easier on your Honda to clear your view
Your Honda works hard to make it easy to see in the dark, in the bad weather, etc, because it wants to keep you safe! You can make it easier for your Honda to clear your view by investing in some quality wiper blades. We also recommend having your headlights revitalized or replaced if they look cloudy or aren't seeming as bright.

7. Freshen up the interior
Freshen up the interior by adding some personal touches that'll make your ride more comfortable. Add a pretty air freshener (like those from Bath and Body Works), put a cushy steering wheel cover on, invest in a some nice looking storage items to help you keep things tidy, etc. Make your Honda truly yours!

We hope you have an awesome Valentine's Day this year, and take the time to show your Honda some love! As we mentioned above, we can help you clean up or freshen up the interior and exterior, as well as help you invest in some new tires or floor mats. We love helping our neighbors get the perfect Honda, and keep it looking great, too. Let us know how we can help with your auto needs this Valentine's Day! It's our goal to provide you the best dealership experience of your life at our location, just 12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids and around the corner from RiverTown Crossings Mall. We look forward to seeing you!

The new A-Class: TecDay Interior Design - Modern Luxury

December 10, 2017 0
Next year, Mercedes-Benz will start rolling out its second generation of compact vehicles, signaled by the introduction of the all new A-Class, the fourth generation since the birth of the model in 1997 and the second iteration in the hatchback form. As a preview, Mercedes-Benz has recently organized a TecDay event in Stuttgart, where select journalists and clients were able to discover the revolutionary interior concept of the forthcoming W 177 model series. Futuristic materials, trims and colour combinations are all new and designed to appeal to a below-30 target group of clients.

The next Mercedes-Benz A-Class will go all digital with its newly designed interior. The dashboard will be a complete departure from today's model and a true revolution in the premium compact class. For the first time in history, the A-Class will be offered with an all-digital instrument cluster and a wide display for the COMAND Online infotainment system, which is to be upgraded to the NTG 6.0 version. Both LED screens benefit from a diagonal of 10.25 inches. The minimalist and clean cues of the organic dashboard are also translated into the absence of a cowl above the widescreen cockpit.

Further exclusive elements are the options that are transferred from the high-end S-Class model: the new generation of steering wheels with improved operation and Touch Control buttons, the massage function for the seats and the ambient lighting in up to 64 colours and tones. The turbine-looking, illuminated air vents are also another feature that comes from another range-topping model - the new CLS (C 257). Last, but not least, the control and operation concept is rounded with the introduction of the large, controller-less touchpad, which promises an intuitive and sharp experience through natural swipe movements.

To find out more technical details about the interior of the new A-Class, set for official premiere at the Geneva Motor Show 2018, you can read the following press release from Mercedes-Benz. Enjoy!

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

The interior design of the new A-Class

The interior of the A-Class is a completely new departure, and revolutionises the compact class from the inside with a new feeling of spaciousness. The unique architecture is particularly marked by the avantgarde design of the dashboard. There is much a more generous amount of interior space.

In the coming year, the new A-Class as a harbinger of the new compact car generation will replace a bestseller that has decisively contributed to a more youthful brand image for Mercedes-Benz: the average age of European drivers of this most progressive compact class model is now 13 years lower than for the preceding series. And now the revolution is set to continue: the coming A‑Class completely redefines Modern Luxury in the interior. At the same time it has considerably more utility value, making it as youthful as ever but as grown-up as never before.

"The new A-Class embodies the next stage in our design philosophy of sensual purity, and has the potential to usher in a new design era," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. "The interior presents modern luxury at a level previously unattainable in this class, and transports the user interface into the digital age."

The interior architecture and the control & display systems of the new A-Class are a USP in this segment. The dashboard is divided into two three-dimensional, horizontal sections: the lower section is visually separated from the main body of the dashboard by a "trench", and it appears to float in front of the dashboard. The optional ambience lighting enhances this effect, accentuating the free-floating impression of the substructure.

The standard widescreen cockpit is completely free-standing, and for the first time there are absolutely no cowls above the instruments. The sporty air vents in a turbine-look are another highlight.

The A-Class also takes its lead from the luxury Mercedes-Benz models where many other details are concerned. The multifunctional steering wheel comes from the S-Class, for example. The front seats likewise have comfort features available from higher segments, including seat climate control, massage function and multicontour seat. The trim elements are in a "wrap-around" design, and the choice of materials (e.g. open-pore wood) underscores the progressive, high-quality positioning.

The interior has a greatly enhanced feeling of spaciousness, better all-round visibility and more space. Utility value is increased by more shoulder-room (front +9 mm, rear +22 mm), elbow-room (front +35 mm, rear +36 mm) and headroom (front +7 mm, rear +8 mm). Easier access to the rear seats is another plus point of the new A-Class. The luggage compartment behind the rear seats is more suitable for family and recreational use, and has a capacity of 370 litres – 29 litres more than the preceding model. Thanks to two-section rear lights, the loading aperture is 20 cm wider than before, and the luggage compartment floor is 11.5 cm longer. If required the rear seat backrest can be positioned more upright, e.g. to accommodate bulky boxes. All-round visibility has also been considerably improved: by around ten percent.

Interior and seats: Interior revolution

The interior of the A-Class is a completely new departure, and revolutionises the compact class from the inside with a new feeling of spaciousness. The unique architecture is particularly marked by the avantgarde design of the dashboard. For the first time a cowl above the cockpit has been completely dispensed with. As a result, the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one front door to the other with no visual discontinuity. The standard widescreen cockpit is completely free-standing. The sporty air vents in a turbine-look are another highlight. The front seats have comfort features available from higher segments, including seat climate control, massage function and multicontour seat.

The lower section of the dashboard provides the basis for the turbine-look air vents and the completely free-standing widescreen display. This is available in three versions: with two 7-inch (17.78 cm), one 7 and one 10.25-inch (26 cm) or with two 10.25-inch displays. For the latter two variants Mercedes-Benz uses bonded glass technology. Integration of the air conditioning display into the central screen also considerably helps to maintain the clear line of the cockpit. The air conditioning is controlled by the horizontal rocker switches of the A/C operating unit or via the corresponding on-screen menu.

Thanks to the omission of a cockpit cowl, the main body of the dashboard with its trim extends from one front door to the other behind the seemingly free-floating widescreen. The trim elements are in a "wrap-around" design, and the choice of materials (e.g. open-pore wood) underlines the progressive, modern positioning as the top interior in this class.

The five round air vents have a new turbine look inspired by the world of aviation. Finely designed air vanes in a concentric arrangement create the impression of a jet aircraft turbine. In one equipment line the vent surround is colour-accentuated at the depth of the vent geometry, giving the impression of an afterburner. The air vents in the middle are driver-oriented, accentuating the sportiness of the interior.

The door centre panel transitions seamlessly into the armrest, underlining the sensual, flowing design principle. The newly designed 3‑spoke steering wheel, door handles, centre console and seats follow a modern design idiom. The ring-shaped, completely closed grab/door-pull handle is of unusual design and particularly ergonomic.

Ambience lighting: avantgarde light pattern

From 12 to 64 – with the generation change, five times as many colours are available for the ambience lighting of the new A‑Class. And it is not just the variety that has increased, as the emotive presentation also sets standards in this segment: the different colours are composed into ten colour worlds allow an avantgarde lighting display with spectacular colour changes.

The colour worlds can be matched to the different styles of the widescreen display if required, creating a harmonious overall impression. There are also lighting effects that customers can activate individually.

The avantgarde ambience lighting was already taken into consideration in an early development phase, and systematically integrated into the interior design. This is apparent e.g. in the area where the upper and lower sections of the dashboard come together. Thanks to a combination of indirect and direct lighting, a very special ambience is created here which might be compared to the night-time illumination of a historic building. The interior of the turbine-like air vents with galvanised surfaces is likewise emotively presented by the ambience lighting.
The interior lighting uses only long-lasting, energy-saving LED technology.

Seats: comfort features from higher vehicle classes

When developing the seats for the A-Class, Mercedes-Benz used computer-based comfort simulation for the first time in the compact segment. Before the first real seat is actually available, this allows reliable prognoses to be made about the future comfort impression of the seating system solely on the basis of CAD data.

At the same time, comfort features from higher vehicle segments made an appearance: on request, and for the first time in this model series, not only seat heating but also seat climate control and a Multicontour Seat package are available for the front seats. With the seat climate control, there is a radial fan in each seat cushion. The air taken in through the perforated seat cover flows through the seat structure and is vented downwards and to the rear. This surrounds the occupants with a pleasant flow of air. Even when the interior has been strongly heated up in hot weather, the seat climate control rapidly cools the seat surfaces by taking in cooler ambient air. The ventilation level is adjustable in three stages.

With the Multicontour Seat package, the side bolsters and lumbar support can be individually adjusted by an electrically driven pneumatic pump. A massage effect in the lumbar area is provided by air chambers which are inflated and deflated in a pulsing or wave-like motion when the function is activated.

A total of three different front seats are available for the new A-Class: in addition to the basic model there is the comfort seat with up to 20 adjustments and the sporty integral seat available in combination with equipment lines.

The rear seats have a 60/40 split as standard, and the backrests can be folded down accordingly. A rear seat backrest with a 40/20/40 split is also available for even more variability in conjunction with the lines. In combination with the Load Compartment package (optional), the rear seat backrest can be positioned more upright, e.g. to accommodate bulky boxes.

Short interview: "Major step towards the avantgarde"

Three questions for Hartmut Sinkwitz, Head of Interior Design. The 51 year-old studied industrial design and joined Mercedes-Benz in 1995.

Mr Sinkwitz, with its very progressive exterior design, the previous generation of the A-Class decisively contributed to making the Mercedes-Benz brand more youthful. Is the radically new interior design of the new A-Class now intended to create a corresponding "wow" effect amongst the young target group?
Sinkwitz: Well, you haven't seen the exterior design yet (laughs), and here too, we are immediately conveying sportiness and modernity with a puristic, surface-accentuated design with reduced lines and joints. But you are right: The interior of the new A-Class is a major step towards the avantgarde, and unique especially with respect to the open space architecture and the ultra-modern display and control concept. It lends a new quality to the term "modern luxury" in the compact segment, and is an inner revolution.

The dashboard layout is a special feature of the cockpit…
Sinkwitz: …yes, that's correct. Thanks to the visual separation of the lower section from the main body of the dashboard, the former appears to float in front of the dashboard. At the same time, the A-Class is the first series-production model to dispense completely with a classic cockpit shroud. This literally places the large widescreen cockpit with its bonded glass technology in the forefront. Moreover, there is no longer a display in the A/C control panel, as the visual representation is exclusively via the central display. This helped us to realise our clean, puristic and reduced design approach.

What is your personal highlight in the interior?
Sinkwitz: In view of the wealth of inspired design solutions, that is not so easy to say. But I am proud of the ambience lighting, a unique feature in this segment, which creates a very special lighting mood with its variety of colours, colour worlds and a combination of direct and indirect lighting. This only became possible to this extent because we considered the interior lighting before even putting pen to paper.

Luggage compartment and all-round visibility: Fully grown-up

Even though Mercedes-Benz has retained a sporty look for the new A-Class, the utility value has increased: more shoulder, elbow and headroom plus easier access to the rear are clear benefits, as is the larger and more family and recreation-friendly luggage compartment. All-round visibility has also been considerably improved. This enhances both safety and the impression of spaciousness.

The capacity of the luggage compartment behind the rear seats is 370 litres – 29 litres more than in the preceding model. Thanks to two-section rear lights, the loading aperture is 20 cm wider than before, and the luggage compartment floor is 11.5 cm longer. But the progress is not only obvious on paper: the developers of the new A-Class attached particular importance to utility and loading convenience, and virtually tested the luggage compartment with an extensive shopping basket during an early conceptual phase.

The list of shopping basket contents covered over 70 different items. Loading was simulated using the CAD data of the vehicle and items, and where necessary the design of the luggage compartment was fine-tuned. The result is that not only can a pushchair be accommodated in the boot of the A-Class, but also a bicycle if its wheels are separately stowed. Two additional crates of drinks can be stowed compared with the preceding model. A golf bag can also be carried, or two if the luggage cover is removed. If required, the rear seat backrest can be positioned more upright, e.g. to accommodate bulky boxes.

The stowage concept is equally practical: the oddments tray in the centre console ahead of the shift or DCT lever has been significantly enlarged to accommodate items such as a smartphone, wallet, keys or a garage door opener. A cup holder on the centre tunnel for mugs, cans and bottles up to 0.5 litres is a new standard feature. The cup holder insert is removable, making a further stowage space available. The owner's manual is smaller in size, and is accommodated in a separate flap in the glove compartment.

The stowage facilities in the door panels have significantly increased in size, however. 1.5-litre PET bottles or A4-sized magazines can now be stowed in the front door pockets. The rear door panels have bottle holders for 1-litre PET bottles. A new feature in all four door panels is the integrated accommodation of safety vests, which are therefore quickly to hand when needed.

Better all-round visibility for added safety and comfort

Much detailed effort has also gone into the improved all-round visibility. The risk of overlooking vehicles or pedestrians when turning off, changing lane or parking has been significantly reduced. All in all, the obscured area has been reduced by 10 percent compared to the preceding model. This was principally achieved by specifically slimming down the A, B and C-pillars and their claddings. Improved visibility is also assured by positioning the exterior mirrors on the door outer panel rather than in the mirror triangle.

A good view to the rear is ensured by the new rear window wiper. For a larger wiped area, the housing of the roof spoiler has an inner recess to create space for the longer wiper blade.

More space: increased comfort-related dimensions

Not only has the sense of spaciousness been improved, but the occupants also have significantly more width available, as the table shows:

Interesting aspects of the A-Class: Did you know that...

…the success story of the compact cars from Mercedes-Benz already began 20 years ago, with the launch of the first A-Class? More than 5,555,555 Mercedes-Benz compact cars have been delivered worldwide since March 1997 - of which three million alone were A-Class models.

…the introduction of the new A-Class in 2012 significantly contributed to a more youthful Mercedes-Benz brand image? In Europe the average age of drivers owning a new A-Class is more than 13 years less than for drivers of the preceding model series. In China one in three customers were under the age of 30 in 2016.

…the A-Class has a particularly high capture rate? In western Europe in 2016, 70 percent of A-Class drivers did not previously drive a Mercedes‑Benz.

…the compact car segment around the A-Class is being expanded further? At present the compact car family consists of 5 models: A-Class, B-Class, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA. There will be 8 models in the future. The Concept A Sedan show car provides an outlook on the next compact car generation, and the Concept EQA shows how the EQ family can be extended to the compact segment.

…in early 2012, disguised prototypes of the A-Class drove through Germany with a full covering of QR code decals rather than with the usual camouflage? During this "QR Trophy", car enthusiasts were able to scan the codes and win a trip to the world premiere of the A-Class at the Geneva Motor Show.

…the last A-Class generation has won numerous design awards? These include the "red dot Design Award 2013", the "Design Trophy 2013" (Auto Zeitung) and the "AUTO BILD Design Award 2012".

…since summer 2016, car2go customers can also drive the Mercedes-Benz A-Class as well as smart models? car2go first expanded its fleet in Berlin with the compact model, followed by the Rhineland, Munich and Hamburg.

…the A-Class was voted the vehicle with the highest value retention in its class by "Focus Online" and "Bähr & Fess Forecast" in 2012? With the highest percentage value retention (55.5 percent) in its segment as a four-year old used car, the A-Class was a "2016 value retention champion".

...the last A-Class generation was the first Mercedes-Benz model to be available with comprehensive smartphone integration? From the beginning of 2016 the infotainment systems Apple® CarPlay® (for iPhone® owners) and MirrorLink® became available.

Honda CR-V Named 2018 Motor Trend SUV of the Year

November 29, 2017 0
GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––From the initial announcement to the arrival last year, the redesigned Honda CR-V, a long-standing favorite choice in the Crossover/SUV market, received absolutely positive reviews throughout the auto industry for it's new look, new engine, and overall smart engineering and design. Since then, the talk has quieted but the CR-V has continued to dominate the market. This year, the Honda CR-V was named 2018 Motor Trend SUV of the Year, a high-level honor and great reason to brag.

Motor Trend has called the CR-V a "quiet achiever" for its "outright excellence in the industry's most competitive segment". At RiverTown Honda, we agree completely. The CR-V has always been a best-seller at our dealership because it simply delivers well across the board. From the new, sporty exterior design, to the new turbocharged engine - one of the first in its class in the U.S. market, to the almost luxury interior, the 2017 Honda CR-V offers the most bang for the consumer's buck. This crossover is downright thoughtful. Because of this, it stands tall against some of the class's toughest competitors, even European luxury, like the Volvo XC60. In fact, it beat out 23 contenders for the title including Alfa Romeo's Stelvio.

Why Motor Trend Named the Honda CR-V the 2018 SUV of the Year:

  • The advancement in design
  • The engineering excellence
  • Efficiency
  • Safety
  • Value
  • Performance of intended function
"Honda made sure it kept its crown jewel ahead of the field by paying attention to a wide range of details," Detroit editor Alisa Priddle said. "Others might excel in certain fields, but others don't put the whole package together the way the CR-V does."

While the exterior was notably not a favorite of the judges, we believe the new design was a bold step in the right direction, and one that helped establish its new identity and introduce a new design direction for Honda's full line. The interior, however, was a favorite. For a mass market crossover in the non-luxury category, the interior was noted as "swanky", "loaded", and "intuitive". The function of the cabin was somewhat of a unicorn in the category offering intelligently designed, versatile, and ultimately accessible space, with a low load floor, 60/40 split rear seats with levers in the load area, and a class-leading 39.2 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seats upright.

Honda CR-V Named 2018 Motor Trend SUV of the Year

All of this cargo space and versatility comes with a longer and taller body, but a lower weight, which helps the CR-V achieve higher fuel efficiency than ever before. The entry level 2017 model CR-V gets 26 city/32 hwy, but the Touring model gets 28 city/34 hwy and for an SUV, that's impressive. The CR-V still isn't a performance vehicle, but that doesn't mean it's boring. Motor Trend touched on the positive throttle response with the 1.5L Turbo with CVT and the responsive handling that feels confident, tight, and controlled.

The passive and active safety features in the 2017 CR-V are another large factor that helped it take the Motor Trend SUV of the Year title. Passive features include the ACE Body Structure and other features built into the car that would assist in the event of a crash, while the active features are items included in the Honda Sensing Suite like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information System, etc. The judge's favorite feature was the Lane Keeping Assist, mainly because it didn't require a painted lane line, like most other systems do, to determine the edge of the road. One Motor Trend Editor called it the best lane keeping system, aside from Tesla's.

Evans was equally impressed. “It’s seriously impressive, especially for the price,” he said of Honda Sensing. “This is one of the most advanced driver-assistance systems on the market, and you can get it in an everyday family crossover.”

Motor Trend hit the nail on the head with its in-depth analysis on the 2017 Honda CR-V and we couldn't be more thrilled to hear it's been named the 2018 Motor Trend SUV of the year! At RiverTown Honda, we agree the value of the CR-V is the biggest reason to consider this vehicle. The MSRP for a Touring AWD model is $33,795, while a base model will only run consumers $24,045. One must also consider the high resale value and the reliability Honda offers on top of everything else.

If you're interested in checking out a 2017 Honda CR-V for yourself, don't hesitate to stop by our dealership in Grandville, only 12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. It's our goal to provide you the best dealership experience of your life and we truly mean it! The new Mercedes-AMG GT: The sporting sensation

May 21, 2014 0

A new AMG high-performance automobile is all set for its world premiere in the autumn of 2014. The Mercedes-AMG GT will thrill sports car fans throughout the world with breath-taking design and supreme agility. Fascinating, dynamic - and versatile into the bargain: the GT is destined for a new segment - turning the dream of the authentic Mercedes-AMG sports car into reality.

"The new Mercedes-AMG GT shows that we will be positioning AMG more vehemently and aggressively than to date as a dynamic sports car brand," notes Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "The technological substance of the Mercedes-AMG GT underscores our high aspirations with regard to driving dynamics, agility and sportiness. Following the global success of the SLS AMG, the new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG. An initial exclusive look at the design of the interior shows what is in store for our customers: a GT sports car in its purest form."

The sensual purity of a superlative driving machine

A sneak preview of the interior provides an alluring foretaste of the new Mercedes-AMG GT: the interior design embodies emotion and sensuality like no other sports car. The uncompromising lines of the interior components and their authentic materials exude a clarity that uses contrasting effects to help define the concept of "modern luxury".

A dominant aspect in the cockpit of the GT is the further stylistic development of the central "aviation design" theme which is typical of Mercedes-Benz sports cars. The dashboard places an extreme emphasis on width, creating an impression of a powerful wing. This effect is supported by the four central spotlight-style vents and the individual vents at the left and right ends of the dashboard. The dominant centre console presents a correspondingly dynamic character: its shaping reminiscent of a NACA air intake and the employed materials suggest that it has been adopted directly from motor racing. Another clever design feature comes in the form of the controls on the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which are arranged like eight cylinders in a V layout, further bolstering the powerful and high-tech impression made by the centre console.

Enough to set pulses racing even when stationary

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG GT also boasts a fascinatingly exclusive look and feel, with the finest materials and outstanding workmanship combining to conjure up a setting that simply exudes class. As such, the exclusive interior of the Mercedes-AMG GT is enough to get one truly hooked on this vehicle even while it is still at a standstill. Designed to set the driver's and front passenger's pulses racing even before the car moves off, it provides an enticing intimation of the superlative dynamic performance that can be expected of the new GT when its AMG V8 is brought to life.

Mercedes-Benz TecDay – The new C-Class: Upgrade inside – More Class

October 27, 2013 0
Mercedes-Benz is writing the next chapter of success with the all-new C‑Class. An interior with an exciting, high-class ambience, touchpad and head-up display, the lightest bodyshell in the segment, extensive safety features, a new agile and comfortable suspension as well as GPS-sensitive air conditioning underscore the inner values of the new C-Class. Overall, its innovations and refined equipment and appointments feel like an upgrade to a higher class.

The interior design of the future C-Class comes across as clear, sensual and with a host of new unusual styling features. At the same time it exudes sportiness – but with sensual shapes and high-grade materials, thus epitomising contemporary luxury. It also meets the kind of high design expectations that now tend to be synonymous with technology such as high-end smartphones.

The most prominent new styling features include a completely reinterpreted centre console, whose progressive lines create an inviting, open sense of space, as well as a free-standing central display. High-grade materials, as well as an enthralling interplay of organic surfaces and precisely sculpted lines underscore these new aesthetics and its stylish character.

The innovative touchpad developed by Mercedes-Benz in the new C-Class also marks an important evolutionary step. As on a smartphone, all the head-unit functions can easily be operated using finger gestures. The user also receives clear, haptic feedback when operating the touchpad control surface.

Additional to the information in the central display a head-up display is also new in the C-Class. Like in a jet fighter it projects important information as a virtual image directly into the driver's field of vision. It appears to float over the bonnet, around two metres in front of the driver, thus ensuring the driver is distracted less from the road ahead. The system provides information on speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and messages from DISTRONIC PLUS. It features a high-resolution virtual image which the driver can adjust to their preferred settings.

Intelligent lightweight construction

Less weight, excellent rigidity for superb driving handling coupled with optimum noise and vibration characteristics as well as high crash safety – those are the outstanding characteristics of the new C-Class with its aluminium hybrid body, which makes it the "lightweight construction trailblazer" in its segment. Thanks to intelligent and innovative lightweight construction, the body and bodyshell are around 70 kg lighter than conventional production using steel. The entire vehicle is around 100 kilograms lighter compared with the predecessor. This weight saving significantly reduces fuel consumption to set the new standard in this segment.

Mercedes-Benz has pulled off this technological leap primarily through an entirely new design and the extensive usage of aluminium, hot-formed steel parts and ultra-high-strength steels – an unusual combination in volume-production vehicles. The engineers have redesigned every detail and not simply replaced steel with aluminium, but implemented a concept that is ready for series production by using the right material in the right place – the essence of intelligent lightweight construction.

At the same time the body and bodyshell have been designed to deliver exemplary crash safety. The Saloon not only meets all current national safety ratings, but also the more stringent Mercedes-Benz requirements according to “Best Real Life Safety”. A high-strength safety passenger compartment made predominantly out of high- and ultra-high-strength sheet steel and specifically developed deformation zones with optimised force dissipation paths in the front end and rear made out of an aluminium hybrid structure and an exterior skin that is made virtually entirely of aluminium allow these requirements to be met.

Suspension – agile and yet comfortable

The new C-Class comes across as light-footed and agile, delivering a high level of driving pleasure on winding roads coupled with superb ride comfort in its segment. A newly designed 4-link front axle, which provides excellent axle kinematics, makes a major contribution in this respect.

The new C-Class Saloon is fitted as standard with a steel suspension. Alternatively, it is the first vehicle in this segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping, it offers outstanding road roar and tyre vibration characteristics and the choice of different damper characteristics.

New safety features and assistance systems

The sensor for the new front passenger airbag in the future C-Class can detect every child seat installed. Then the airbag is automatically deactivated. After removing the child seat the airbag is activated again.

The new C-Class also incorporates many of the new assistance systems or existing assistance systems with a range of enhanced functions, which celebrated their world premiere in the S-Class only a few months ago: Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive.

Feel-good atmosphere

The new C-Class is the only vehicle in the segment to offer an air condition system including automatic air recirculation with tunnel detection using satellite navigation. The AIR‑BALANCE package with active fragrancing and ionisation, which celebrated its world premiere in the S-Class, also adds to the feel-good atmosphere.

II. Interior design: Increase in perceived value comes from inside

The cockpit and passenger compartment come across as clear, sensual and with a host of new unusual styling details. Clarity stands for visible high-tech attributes and straight-line sportiness – purism in the best sense of the word. Sensuality stands for design ideas with exciting flowing shapes and high-grade materials – a reinterpretation of contemporary luxury.

The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which one rarely finds even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the painstaking choice of select, high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as the precision of the finely crafted details. But it also applies to a new design idiom which combines elegance and harmony congenially with sensuality and dynamic sportiness, thus adding to the interior's extraordinarily high perceived value.

Courage to embrace the new

The designers pick up key traits of the exterior inside the vehicle in order to achieve this overall aim. This applies above all to the scintillating play of contrasts between the clearly sculpted lines and surfaces which grow organically out of these contrasts. The hallmark contemporary Mercedes-Benz design idiom of the dropping line sloping to the rear is, for instance, picked up in the doors. At the same time, the style-defining new interior of the new C‑Class meets the most discerning design expectations which are today characterised by devices such as high-end smartphones and tablets. Thus the driver and passengers in the new C-Class enjoy a generous sense of space and understated luxury, whose clear-cut style fits in with contemporary tastes. The upshot is a new feel-good character in this category – take a seat in the new C-Class and the sensation is something akin to an upgrade from economy to business class on an airline.

Mercedes-Benz not only raises the character and perceived value of the interior to a new level for this category with the new C-Class. At the same time, the premium brand also consciously demonstrates through the interior styling the courage to embrace the new in many respects, to adopt a forward-looking vision, thus making an almost radical break with the previous norms in the hitherto somewhat rational class.

The most striking new styling feature is an entirely reinterpreted centre console: on vehicles with automatic transmissions, its large, one-piece dashboard console sweeps elegantly from the centre air outlets to the equally new touchpad in the handrest over the controller on the central tunnel. These continuous clear-cut lines with their perfect harmony create an open sense of space, conveying an unrivalled sense of simple and puristic modernity. The large unique component is available in numerous material finishes – such as fine wood, precisely bordered by a chrome surround, or in an exclusive piano-lacquer look – and underscores the interior's high-quality ambience and its avant-garde yet stylish character in a pleasant, clear way.

The progressively styled centre console provides an extremely fluid transition to the dashboard and beyond into the doors. The sportily designed, horizontal dashboard separates a wing-like trim element in the upper and lower section. This visual structure enables various combinations of materials and colours to be selected to create an individual feel-good atmosphere.

High quality all-round

A centrally positioned free-standing central display is the main eye-catching feature across the centre console – with a screen diagonal of 17.78 centimetres (7 inches) or 21.33 centimetres (8.4 inches) if COMAND Online is specified. The larger version is made of bonded glass and galvanised with a frame in silver shadow. Thanks to its ergonomic positioning, the eye easily adapts to the central display.

Five air outlets with a central adjusting knob and horizontal louvre insert give the dashboard a sporty touch. The five ventilation outlets in silver shadow with their metallic cool-touch effect contrast with the warm look of the other materials – such as the wood in the centre console or the leather on the dashboard.

Three-dimensional, fine, contemporary trim elements emphasise the high perceived value – as does the hand-finished, intricate stitching, such as on the upper section of the dashboard, in the centre panel and on the beltlines. The door panelling has also been redesigned and is characterised by high-grade materials as well as striking surface grain and eye-catching curves.

While various steering wheel variants are specified depending on the selected equipment line, each one comes in a 3-spoke leather steering wheel design with twelve buttons. The differences relate to the colours and material. This provides the interior with wide-ranging differentiation options, running the whole gamut from "tangible luxurious sensuality" to "progressive sportiness".

The discerning aspirations are also continued systematically in the controls. Surfaces with uniform styling and a minimal number of switches provide a serene, reassured sense of space. Some of the switches such as for the power windows or the rotary switch for the lights were taken from the S-Class, thus setting the highest standards. Black high-sheen, genuine metal and galvanised surfaces, as well as effect paintwork matching the interior appointments colours form a key element of the high-quality feel.

III. Touchpad: Command with finger-tip control

The touchpad in the new C-Class developed by Mercedes-Benz marks an evolutionary step. As on a smartphone, all the head-unit functions can be operated using finger gestures.

The 65 x 45 millimetre control surface of the new touchpad made out of scratch-resistant material is built into the handrest on the central control panel and bordered by a high-quality metal support – a design feature with high-tech aspirations which exudes luxury at the same time.

While other solutions with a touch-sensitive surface only support selected operating steps, the driver and front passenger can use the touchpad in the new C-Class to control all the functions in the central infotainment control panel using the kind of single and multitouch gestures familiar from smartphones and tablet PCs. Slow and fast gestures are possible. The touchpad, which will be premiered in the future C-Class, also allows letters, numbers and special characters to be entered using the handwriting recognition function, in the respective language supported by the head unit. The user receives clear haptic feedback when operating the touchpad control surface. Characters entered using the handwriting function can also be read aloud by the system, thus supporting blind operation. The acoustic output also ensures that the driver does not need to take their eyes off the road, keeping distraction to an absolute minimum.

The user can input commands reliably with their hand sitting firmly on the ergonomic handrest without any need for free-floating fingers. A new handrest detection feature also increases operating safety and helps prevent incorrect inputs. As part of this process, the system analyses a sensor signal in three dimensions, thus detecting whether the hand is simply being placed on the handrest or is actually inputting data. The icons on the control surface are illuminated in the dark to help the user locate the various functions.

Three touch-sensitive buttons are arranged behind the touchpad which can be used to operate key functions quickly and directly (back function, switch to favourites menu, audio quick menu).

The touchpad in the C-Class thus offers an additional, fully fledged and innovative input option to complement the existing Controller and LINGUATRONIC voice control system. The user can choose at any time which input method they prefer.

IV. Head-up Display: Infos in Focus

Additional to the information in the central display a head-up display is a new feature in the C-Class. Like in a jet fighter, it displays important information directly in the driver's field of view on the front windscreen, thus ensuring the driver is distracted less from the road ahead. The system provides information on speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and messages from driver assistance systems.

The technology is based on mirror optics and a full-colour display module with a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels which is driven by high-power LEDs. They project the virtual image, which measures around 21 x 7 centimetres, into the driver's field of vision where it appears to float around two metres away above the bonnet. The resolution of more than 60 pixels per degree of viewing angle ensures a pin-sharp image.

A light sensor located near the top edge of the roof automatically adjusts the brightness of the head-up display to the exterior lighting conditions. Brightness levels of 10,000 cd/m² plus can be achieved on sunny days. Since the contrast figure is better than 1000:1, the system produces a high-quality display even in the dark.

The driver can adjust the height of the virtual image so it can be easily viewed. On vehicles with a seat memory function this feature stores the individual setting. A range of display content can also be enabled or disabled and the brightness of the display adjusted individually.

The special head-up windscreen with its wedge-shaped laminated foil eliminates double images produced by reflections on the outer and inner boundary surfaces of the windscreen. It superimposes the secondary image, which is produced on the outer surface, onto the primary image. This offset depends on the particular angle and has been optimised for a driver in a normal seated position.

V. Bodyshell: Sturdy bodyshell – made easy

Less weight, excellent rigidity for superb driving handling coupled with optimum noise and vibration characteristics as well as high crash safety – the bodyshell of the new C-Class provides an innovative base which also facilitates new fuel consumption benchmark figures.

Lighter cars are more efficient. That is why Mercedes-Benz has substantially reduced the weight of the future C-Class. Thanks to intelligent and innovative lightweight construction, the aluminium hybrid body is around 70 kg lighter than conventional production using steel. The gross vehicle weight has been cut by around 100 kilograms compared with the predecessor, which translates into up to 20 percent lower fuel consumption without any loss in power. This has turned the new C-Class into the "lightweight construction leader" in its segment.

Mercedes-Benz has pulled off this technological leap primarily through an entirely new design and the extensive usage of aluminium, hot-formed steel parts and ultra-high-strength steels - an unusual combination in volume-production vehicles. The proportion of these materials has therefore increased noticeably compared with the successful predecessor.

Material Comparison: Previous model series / New C-Class

Aluminium (sheet metal and cast) - 9% / 48%
Hot-formed steel parts - 3% / 8%
Ultra-high-strength sheet steel - 3% / 4%

Simply by using these materials, the weight of the bodyshell structure has been reduced by some 40 kilograms compared with the outgoing saloon. Virtually the entire outer skin, consisting of front wings, bonnet, boot lid, doors and the roof panelling, has been made from sheet aluminium, thus helping reduce weight further.

The bodyshell engineers delivered further benefits – both in terms of weight and as regards other important body characteristics – by means of intelligent conceptual lightweight construction. As part of this process, they have redesigned each detail optimally and not simply replaced steel with aluminium. After all, the specification not only required a reduction in weight, but also called for a bodyshell which in many respects sets new, challenging standards, with hitherto unprecedented performance in this segment – for instance the high rigidity at the force transition points from the suspension to the body or in relation to the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) characteristics. This essentially helps optimise the tyre noise.

New bodyshell concepts proved the most direct way of meeting these requirements. The designers exploited the greater design leeway offered by die-cast aluminium, for instance, compared with steel. The body thus consists of nine large cast components. The same designers also managed to integrate and merge various components in a single die-cast component, which would otherwise have to be made up of several steel components with conventional steel designs. In this way a host of functions can be mapped in a single component and installation space put to optimum use. All shock absorbers are mounted in the front and rear of the vehicle on rigid aluminium die-cast components.

Other design details include larger cross-sections as well as precisely calculated stabilising beading in the floor and bulkhead. High-strength adhesives are used extensively to firmly bond the parts, which in turn helps increase the rigidity of the body.

Body and bodyshell clearly exceed the values for overall vehicle rigidity, which are traditionally outstanding for Mercedes-Benz, and set a new benchmark in this segment. As a result, the ambitious goals regarding driving dynamics and noise level have even been exceeded.

Safety takes precedence

The body has been designed for exemplary crash safety. The Saloon not only meets all current national laws, but also all rating requirements as well as the more stringent internal Mercedes-Benz safety requirements which are based on what actually happens during accidents.

A high-strength safety passenger compartment lies at the heart of this concept. It consists essentially of high and ultra-high-strength sheet steel and panels with graduated wall thicknesses designed to withstand specific local stresses.

It is surrounded by specifically calculated deformation zones which have been extensively field-tested. Thanks to optimised dissipation paths and a combination of aluminium cast parts and ultra-high-strength materials, this set-up achieves outstanding crash test results (e.g. Euro NCAP and U.S. NCAP) and guarantees maximum safety for occupants.

The crash structure of the front end is essentially made up of three components:

- The front side members are bolted to the axle and engine mounts made of high-strength steel and extended towards the front and rear to direct forces specifically into the floor structure. In the case of a serious frontal collision, the subframe deforms in a defined manner in order to prevent intrusions into the passenger compartment.

- As a medium impact level, the geometry of the front-end main side members has been fine-tuned to improve crash kinematics. The innovative "laser welding" joining technique enabled, among other things, reinforcement parts to be incorporated. They also reduce the weight and contribute substantially to improving rigidity. Impact-absorbing elements in the side member extensions projecting forwards towards the front wheels help cushion the frontal impact early on.

- Additional wheel arch reinforcements form a third structure located above the front side members to further increase resistance to shape deformation in the event of a frontal collision.

A curved high-pressure hydroformed tube and aluminium cast consoles with additional struts, which have hitherto only been used in cabriolets, enclose the front module. An additional strut made out of high-strength steel between the damper dome and windscreen cross-member on the driver's side distributes the load from forces in the upper side member level and reduces steering and pedal intrusion in the footwell.

The rear area uses an aluminium hybrid design with longitudinal and cross-member components made out of die-cast aluminium and high-strength steels. Graduated sheet metal thicknesses of the rear floor side members provide specific deformation characteristics in the event of a rear impact.

Reinforcement sections in the beltline area and at bumper level increase the rigidity and strength of the aluminium doors. The handle areas are also protected by ring-shaped reinforcement measures. The sidewall structure is primarily reinforced with hot-formed ultra-high-strength materials. This provides optimum occupant protection in the case of a side impact; the B-pillar design in particular makes an outstanding contribution in this respect. The front and rear end can be completely removed, making the vehicle easy to repair.

VI. Chassis and suspension: Comfort meets dynamism

The suspension is all-new and offers exemplary suspension and ride comfort combined with outstanding driving dynamics. The new C-Class comes across as light-footed and agile, delivering a high level of driving pleasure on winding roads coupled with superb ride comfort in its segment.

A newly designed 4-link front axle plays a major part in the agile handling characteristics. Thanks to the 4-link principle, the front independent suspension is fully decoupled from the spring strut - resulting in favourable axle kinematics: for instance the camber increases as the suspension is compressed. This gives rise to more grip and greater cornering forces, making the suspension respond more sensitively to steering movements and allowing a sporty, agile driving style. Since the kingpin inclination is also close to the wheel centre, this provides for large longitudinal force leverage and keeps the scrub radius small, thus minimising sensitivity to vibrations caused by tyre imbalances and fluctuations in braking force.

The components in the new front axle are also made of aluminium. This saves weight (two kilograms less than steel) and thus provides a precise response. This reduction in weight also contributes to the high efficiency of the new C‑Class.

An optimised multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept ensures unsurpassed wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability. A large rear axle bearing augments the outstanding NVH characteristics.

The new C-Class Saloon is fitted as standard with a steel suspension. As an option, three DIRECT CONTROL suspensions are available in conjunction with this suspension:

- A comfort suspension with selective damping system which adjusts automatically to the state of the road surface,
- A DIRECT CONTROL suspension with selective damping system which combines high levels of comfort with sporty looks and
- A sports suspension which is lowered by 15 millimetres, also with selective damping system and sports tuning.

First air suspension in this category

Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tyre vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use a switch to select between the various damper characteristics: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport Plus". The additional "Individual" setting allows the driver to configure the vehicle to suit their personal preferences.

AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for optimum ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. It automatically regulates the ride height as a function of speed and can, for instance, reduce fuel consumption and improve active safety by lowering the vehicle at motorway speeds. The ground clearance can also be increased at the push of a button using the ride height adjustment switch on rough roads or poor access roads.

Since neither the air struts at the front nor the free-standing air springs at the rear are responsible for wheel location and need to absorb transverse forces, AIRMATIC offers outstandingly comfortable driving characteristics which are otherwise the reserve of the luxury segment. It smooths out for passengers expansion joints, patches of asphalt and undulating asphalt caused by trucks braking at traffic lights.

Without impairing comfort, the adjustable damping can deliver a high level of driving dynamics. During evasive manoeuvres, the system adjusts, for instance, the damping forces to the vehicle's driving dynamics in fractions of a second.

VII. Front passenger airbag: Intelligent passenger in the front seat

Safety ranks among the core values of the Mercedes-Benz brand, which once again takes the lead by pioneering a host of innovative developments. One such development is the adaptive front-passenger airbag in the new C-Class.

The front passenger seat can be fitted with automatic child seat recognition, which dispenses with the existing transponder and instead works with a weight mat. This enables any child seat to be used. The airbag is automatically deactivated in this case and reactivated once the child seat has been removed. Mercedes-Benz is setting new standards with this system. Unlike systems offered by competitors, which often use a key switch to deactivate the airbag, this system prevents the user from operating the airbag incorrectly. Users often forget to manually activate the front passenger airbag when removing the child seat. In the event of an accident this can place adult occupants in considerable danger since the front passenger airbag and the seat belts work in tandem and can only achieve the necessary protective effect for adults by operating together. The system presented here prevents this by automatically activating the front passenger airbag when the child seat is removed.

VIII. Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: The intelligent car

Making top-class safety available to everyone is the declared aim of Mercedes-Benz. That is why the new C-Class also incorporates many of the new assistance systems and assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions, which celebrated their world premiere in the S-Class and E-Class only a few months ago. These systems enhance comfort and safety at the same time. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive.

The basis for the numerous functions of the assistance systems is an extensive sensor system, which provides the vehicle with a 360-degree all-round view. This includes a new Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera (SMPC) behind the front windscreen in the area of the rear-view mirror and hence at the level of the driver's eyes. Two camera eyes provide it with a three-dimensional view of the area up to around 50 metres in front of the vehicle, and it is able to monitor the overall situation ahead for a range of up to 500 metres and thus detect the position and movement of objects, especially of vehicles and pedestrians.

Two short-range radar sensors in the front bumper and at the side of the rear bumper respectively (range up to 30 metres), a long-range radar (up to 200 metres) including mid-range scan (up to 60 metres) behind the radiator grille and a multi-mode radar (up to 80 metres) in the middle of the rear bumper complete the sensor system.

The data from the camera and radar is amalgamated in a control unit in order to provide the system-specific data for the various functions for a host of assistance systems – a process dubbed "sensor fusion" by the safety experts. Intelligent algorithms perform a visual evaluation of this three-dimensional information in order to detect and carry out spatial classification of vehicles that are driving ahead, crossing, approaching from the rear and even oncoming, as well as pedestrians, within a large field of vision. In addition, the camera also detects road markings and a variety of traffic signs. The aim is all-round protection not just for occupants of the vehicle itself, but for other road users too.

The new C-Class is fitted as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness. The COMAND system navigation function on motorways flags up nearby break options as stopovers, providing the system has been specified in the vehicle. The ATTENTION ASSIST function offers an adjustable level of sensitivity and can inform the driver in a separate view in the instrument cluster about their level of drowsiness and how long they have been driving since their last break.

As an option, new assistance systems and existing assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions from the new S-Class and E-Class are available, which fuse data from various sensor technologies as part of the Intelligent Drive concept, thus substantially enhancing comfort and safety. For instance the Stop&Go Pilot integrated in DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist is a semi-automatic traffic jam assistant, which at speeds below 60 km/h can follow the vehicle ahead even where there are no or unclear lane markings, thus enabling the driver to follow the flow of traffic. The BAS PLUS Brake Assist System can now also detect crossing traffic and boost the braking force if the driver fails to apply the brakes sufficiently; the PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect stationary vehicles as well as pedestrians, brake automatically if the driver fails to react and thus prevent accidents up to 50 km/h and mitigate the severity up to 72 km/h. In flowing traffic, the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides similar assistance throughout the entire speed range from 7 to 200 km/h. The enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of the lane by applying the brakes on one side in the case of broken lane markings and the risk of a collision, e.g. through fast overtaking vehicles, parallel traffic or even oncoming traffic.

The host of assistance systems also includes Active Parking Assist, which facilitates automatic parking with active steering and braking intervention in parallel and perpendicular spaces, a 360° camera which can show the vehicle and vehicle environment from various perspectives incl. virtual bird's-eye view, a Traffic Sign Assist with wrong-way warning function, which can also provide a warning of speed limits and no-overtaking and no-entry zones, as well as the Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, which provides an anti-dazzle permanent main beam within the main beam cone by specifically dipping the lights for other vehicles.

IX. Climate control: Signals from space

Mercedes-Benz has systematically further developed and substantially improved the air conditioning system in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the precise regulation, performance and the air quality.

The new C-Class is the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. On the basis of map information from the navigation system and the GPS location data, the system detects when the vehicle enters a tunnel. It then automatically closes the air recirculation flap in order to prevent the exterior fume-filled air from entering the vehicle via the air vents. Once the vehicle has left the tunnel, the flap opens and fresh air can once again flow into the interior.

Individual fragrance, ionised air

Another highlight for creating the feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, ionisation and even more efficient filtration compared with the standard model. It was adopted from the S-Class in which the AIR-BALANCE package only recently celebrated its world premiere.

The interior fragrances extend the sensual perception of the Mercedes-Benz interior and help individualise the smell of the interior. Four different fragrances are available: FREESIDE MOOD, NIGHTLIFE MOOD, DOWNTOWN MOOD, SPORTS MOOD. The fragrancing system comprises a glass flask with a dispenser and a fragrance generator in the glove compartment.

The fragrancing changes the interior smell neither permanently, nor are the fragrance molecules deposited on the vehicle's fabric surfaces nor on clothing. The impression left by the fragrance is subtle, comes across as unobtrusive and fades away quickly. The vehicle occupants can switch the active fragrancing on and off, and adjust its intensity to their own preferences.

Ionisation is another component of the AIR-BALANCE package, with which the air from the air conditioning is conducted into the interior via the ioniser. The ioniser uses a high voltage to generate oxygen ions (oxygen molecules where the high voltage has "snatched" an electron in its shell and which have become electrically charged as a result). The air ionised in this way can eliminate certain viruses, bacteria and spores. At the same time the air can be freshened by an increased concentration of negatively charged oxygen ions. Both help to increase the well-being of passengers.

Mercedes-Benz TecDay: The new V-Class - The Mercedes among Full Size MPVs

October 27, 2013 0
The Mercedes among full size MPVs will be arriving next year in the form of the new V-Class. The successor to the Viano, the newest and largest member of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car family, will be arriving in 2014 – and with it a clear ambition to redefine the benchmark in this segment. The new V-Class therefore combines outstanding spaciousness and exceptional functionality with the sense of quality, the aesthetic appeal, the comfort and the safety that typically characterise the cars that bear the three-pointed star. All this together makes the V-Class the ideal vehicle for large families, for those who take part in active recreational activities and for shuttle service operators, all of whom desire to enjoy and offer only the best.

The interior of the new V-Class features high-quality appointments and reflects the style of Mercedes-Benz passenger car models. It thus very clearly embodies the unmistakable Mercedes-Benz passenger car design philosophy of 'sensual clarity'. The typical contrasting interplay of organic surfaces and clear lines, along with warm and cool colour tones, conveys an exceptional sense of harmony and serves to underline the high-class feel of the vehicle. The car offers a perfect synthesis of function and emotion. This sophisticated finesse is rounded off by discreet ambient lighting in three colour shades. By adopting passenger car design elements, Mercedes-Benz raises the quality and aesthetic appeal of the V-Class to a new level in this segment.

"The interior of our new V-Class combines a generous amount of space and maximum variability with elegance and a high-quality appeal that is on a par with that of the best passenger cars around. In my view, the new V-Class is a true multitalent that is unrivalled in this segment", says Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Interior design: visual breadth and high value

One of the most eye-catching features is the cockpit. The dynamically shaped dashboard is based on a two-section design with the emphasis firmly on breadth. The upper and lower sections are separated by a large, three-dimensional trim element that creates an impression of breadth and conveys a high sense of value. The lower section is sculptural in design. This emphasises the car's spaciousness, whilst also giving a sense of lightness. For the first time in this class, there is the option of a leather-look cockpit upper section with lavishly finished topstitching. High-quality topstitching also features on the leather seats, on the armrests and in the centre section of the side panelling, emphasising the high-value appeal of the entire vehicle interior.

The high-quality and sophisticated impression is reinforced by the control and display components that are a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars: the free-standing central display, the circular ventilation outlets, the 12-button multifunction steering wheel, the DIRECT SELECT lever including shift paddles if an automatic transmission is fitted, the central control panel with Controller (rotary pushbutton), and an innovative touchpad that can be used to operate all telematics functions by means of gestures or letter and number input as on a smartphone. The leather steering wheel fitted as standard is another first in the V-Class segment.

Exceptional comfort and wellbeing thanks to intelligent climate control system

The enhanced and uprated THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control likewise ensures a unique and individual feeling of comfort and wellbeing. It sets new standards in terms of the automatic mode's ability to adapt to individual passenger requirements. The V-Class is the only vehicle in its segment to offer three different ventilation modes for personal climate control, automatic air recirculation when a tunnel is detected and cooling air distribution to both the driver's and the front-passenger side, the intensity of which is automatically adjusted according to the position of the sun.

Separately opening rear window and second loading level

For easy loading and unloading, the V-Class features another first in this segment in the shape of the separately opening rear window attached to the upper tailgate frame. It can be opened and closed independently of the tailgate. This makes loading and unloading easier in two respects: on the one hand, it allows a second loading level; on the other hand, particularly in tight parking spaces, there is no need to open the large tailgate.

Latest COMAND Online generation and Burmester® Sound system

The new V-Class comes with a choice of three infotainment systems, offering a bespoke state-of-the-art solution for all budgets and requirements: Audio 20 USB (standard), Audio 20 CD and, at the top of the range, COMAND Online, which is a fully integrated multimedia system with 80 GB hard-disc navigation, DVD player, internet access and numerous additional functions. The latest generation of COMAND Online features a photorealistic map display, a series of useful apps, an additional Bluetooth® profile that allows internet access, for example from an iPhone®, and the relaying of traffic data in real time.

A superb audio experience comes courtesy of the optional Burmester® Surround Sound system. Optimised for the vehicle, this sound system features 16 high-performance speakers including a bass reflex loudspeaker and a 10-channel DSP amplifier with a total output of 640 watts for first-class "feelgood sound". With COMAND Online and the Burmester® Surround Sound system, the V-Class raises the bar in its segment in terms of navigation, internet use and the enjoyment of music.

Extensive safety equipment

Another USP of the V-Class is its extensive package of safety equipment, including numerous innovative driver assistance systems based on sophisticated radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors, first introduced under the name "Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive" in the new E-Class and S-Class. They reduce the risk of hazards such as strong crosswind gusts, the blind spot or insufficient distance to other vehicles to an absolute minimum. The new full size MPV is even as easy to park as a compact car. The assistance systems enhance both comfort and safety.

Standard equipment for the V-Class includes ATTENTION ASSIST, which warns against drowsiness and inattention, and Crosswind Assist. The latter can compensate for the effects of wind by applying the brakes on the front and rear wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind. Further assistance systems include Blind Spot Assist, Active Parking Assist, which allows automatic parking in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces with active steering and brake actuation, a 360° camera, radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist and Traffic Sign Assist with wrong-way warning function.

II. Interior design: Sophisticated style and high-class appeal

A progressively dynamic design idiom full of lightness and elegance, coupled with exquisitely finished high-grade materials – unmistakable passenger car styling for the new Mercedes-Benz V-Class. With this the Stuttgart-based premium brand is raising quality and aesthetic appeal to a new level in this vehicle class. The V-Class is a confident statement of an independent lifestyle.

Like all current Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the V-Class interior provides an inviting feeling of wellbeing. It follows the new design idiom, which embodies sensual clarity.

Curved cockpit for a generous sense of space full of lightness

One of the most eye-catching features is the cockpit. For the front passengers, it is like sitting in a typical Mercedes passenger car. The dynamically shaped dashboard is based on a two-section design with the emphasis firmly on breadth, allowing different surface structures. The upper and lower sections are made of hard-wearing soft-touch materials. For the first time in this class, there is the option of a leather-look cockpit upper section with lavishly finished topstitching.

The upper and lower sections are separated by a large, three-dimensional trim element that creates an impression of breadth and conveys a sense of high value. It is available in a high-gloss piano-lacquer look, a matt anthracite wave-look, a high-gloss dark brown ash wood-look or a dark anthracite ebony wood-look. The lower section is sculptural in design. This emphasises the generous sense of space whilst also giving a strong sense of lightness.

Free-standing central display and central control panel with touchpad

This high-quality impression is reinforced by the free-standing central display. Standard equipment for the V-Class includes a 17.8-centimetre display with a frame in high-gloss black. A full-glass 21.3-centimetre display with bonded glass and a frame in galvanised silver shadow is available as an option. This new and particularly elegant looking display provides an even more detailed and high-contrast image.

There is another new feature located below the central display: the central control panel that features in Mercedes passenger cars with a Controller (rotary pushbutton) and, for the first time, a multifunctional touchpad (see "Control and display concept" section). The size, design and ergonomics of the central control panel were adapted specifically for the V-Class. It blends harmoniously into the dynamism of the dashboard, further emphasising the sporty shape and lightness of the cockpit.

Multifunction leather steering wheel as standard

Another sporty, elegant touch is provided by the circular nozzles that are a hallmark feature of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Their design is inspired by aviation. All four ventilation outlets are galvanised in silver shadow, creating a metallic surface impression with "cool touch" effect – and an exciting contrast with the warm wood or leather look.

Standard equipment for the V-Class also includes the 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel with 12 buttons and the DIRECT SELECT lever plus shift paddles if an automatic transmission is specified. The steering wheel is adjustable for height and angle, improving ergonomic posture and allowing the seat occupant to relax. The V-Class is the only vehicle in its segment to offer a leather steering wheel as standard.

Individualisation through light, materials and colours

The three-dimensional design of the dashboard trim is echoed on the sliding door and the side wall. This creates a feeling of security and further emphasises the generous sense of space. From front to rear, the interior appears to be cast from a single mould. In the rear, discreet ambient lighting below the trim on the side walls and the sliding door ensures a pleasant, homely light. As soon as the doors are opened, the LED fibre-optic cables are activated and offer a "welcome home" effect. In addition to this, the ambient lighting is activated and deactivated with the exterior lighting, is dimmable in five stages and has three colour shades for creating an individual lighting mood: neutral (white), solar (amber) and polar (ice blue). The convenient overhead control panel likewise features only LED lights as standard: an interior light with fibre-optic cable and reading lamps for the driver and front passenger.

An exclusive choice of materials and colours for the seat covers also provides great scope for individualisation. As is the case for all Mercedes-Benz passenger car models, optional interior design packages are available. The newly developed comfort seats in the V-Class are upholstered in fabric as standard. As an alternative, leather is now joined for the first time by nappa leather upholstery as an option in this class.

Likewise new is the sporty seat upholstery layout, allowing an expressive two-tone concept for the fabric seats and, consequently, further emphasising the feeling of lightness throughout the entire interior. With the leather upholstery, topstitching in a contrasting colour lends the seats a degree of aesthetic appeal that is unparalleled in this segment. High-quality topstitching can also be found on the upper section of the dashboard, on the armrests and in the centre section of the side panelling, emphasising the high-value appeal of the entire vehicle interior.

The perfectly coordinated concept, comprising contrasting shapes, materials and colours, produces an exclusive interior with high-class appeal and underlines Mercedes-Benz's premium claim. The overall impression is a unique combination of hallmark Mercedes elegance with a high-quality feel and sophisticated, sporty lightness.

III. Under the microscope: look and feel - "The most spacious Mercedes-Benz passenger car"

Compared to its predecessor, the new V-Class offers a vastly enhanced interior in every respect. Kai Sieber, Head of Design Mercedes-Benz Vans and Trucks, and Hartmut Sinkwitz, Head of Interior Design Mercedes-Benz Cars, explain the design philosophy and the requirements that need to be met by the Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

Mr Sieber, why revolution rather than evolution?

Kai Sieber: When designing and developing the new V-Class, it was a case of coming up with something completely new rather than upgrading a functional interior. We wanted to give our full size MPV real passenger-car character. And in every respect: high-class appeal, material and colour concept, control and display concept, seating and climate comfort – in short, everything that makes the interior of a Mercedes passenger car stand out.

Hartmut Sinkwitz: Mercedes-Benz Design stands for "sensual clarity". This means that our design showcases high-tech, in other words the state of the art, and also arouses emotions. We want to give our customers an emotional home. The interior of a Mercedes must take into account the striving for a sense of wellbeing, security and enjoyment. We have therefore greatly enhanced the quality of the interior in all our model series in recent years.

Kai Sieber: With the V-Class we are now also bringing state-of-the-art design and high-class appeal to the Mercedes model series for large families – and therefore setting a new standard in this segment. We create a feeling of wellbeing and a level of comfort on a par with Mercedes passenger cars – without forsaking the traditional functionality and variability of a full size MPV.

What makes the V-Class a true Mercedes?

Hartmut Sinkwitz: The cockpit alone has absolute passenger-car character. One particular Mercedes hallmark is the overall concept consisting of sculptural forms, the emotional contrast of sensuality and clarity, and the intelligent use of space. Rounded forms flow into clean lines like organic waves. High-grade materials and colours with warm and cool looks blend harmoniously together. This design idiom allows the V-Class to convey a refined and pleasantly generous sense of space – without appearing oversized or large. On the contrary: it conveys a feeling of freedom and independence. The V-Class is a stylish saloon for discerning families and individualists. Or, in other words: The most spacious Mercedes-Benz passenger car.

Was the V-Class developed by passenger car designers?

Kai Sieber: We assembled a team of designers from the passenger car and van sectors and worked together to develop perceptions of the ideal vehicle, explore extremes and then find a way of getting these ideas into series production. The V-Class therefore has much in common, but also much that sets it apart from current and new Mercedes passenger cars. By way of example, the new touchpad is designed differently for the V-Class. Likewise the shape and design of the dashboard, as well as the material and colour concept, is adapted to suit the character of the V-Class.

Hartmut Sinkwitz: On the other hand, the design of the circular instruments, the ventilation outlets and the free-standing central display are already familiar features seen in many Mercedes passenger car model series. And the inclusion of control logic and switch elements from the S-Class meets the highest of requirements. The aim was to develop an interior design that makes the V-Class recognisable as a member of the Mercedes passenger car family yet has its own unique character. I am confident that it will be very well received by our customers.

IV. Interior: A new dimension of comfort and variability

Featuring numerous innovations such as active seat ventilation with reversing fans, the separately opening rear window and a second loading level, the V-Class sets new standards in its segment in terms of comfort and variability. The interior concept meets the individual requirements of the different target groups. Be it for family, business or leisure – the V-Class offers a uniquely wide range of options and independence when using a full size MPV.

The seats were developed with the focus on cosy comfort and intuitive control. High-grade materials and a new seat structure with optimised lateral support ensure an exceptionally comfortable sitting position in all seats – even on longer trips. The seat cover materials are exceptionally hard-wearing. Thanks to enhanced technology and control logic, the luxury individual rear seats can be folded forward intuitively to afford fast and easy access to the rear. Very little effort is required to push the individual seats forwards and backwards in the further optimised seat rails, allowing almost unlimited seating configurations for practically any requirement. In addition to this, the seats can be folded down to load compartment height or removed completely to create space for luggage or sports and leisure equipment.

Front seats with 4-way lumbar support and active seat ventilation

For the first time in this segment, the driver and front passenger get 4-way lumbar support, which provides additional back relief. It is easily controlled at the push of a button. There is also the option of power-adjustable front seats.

Another USP in terms of comfort is the active seat ventilation with reversing fans for the driver and front passenger, introduced as a world first in the S-Class.

Climate control – individual and intelligent

The enhanced and uprated THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, available as an option to the standard-fit TEMPMATIC system, likewise ensures individual comfort and wellbeing. It sets new standards in terms of the automatic mode's ability to adapt to individual passenger requirements.

For the first time in this vehicle segment, three different ventilation modes with different airflow and air distribution characteristics are available for personal climate control: "FOCUS", "MEDIUM" and "DIFFUSE". "DIFFUSE" is configured to minimise airflow and ensure that air is not aimed directly at the occupants. By preference the air flows out of the defroster vents and footwell openings. "FOCUS", on the other hand, works with higher airflow, with the air mainly coming out of the ventilation nozzles. "MEDIUM" ensures balanced, uniform climate control with medium airflow.

A further new feature is the 2-quadrant solar sensor for automatic adjustment of the interior temperature. It monitors the sun's rays and, if the rays intensify, the blower speed and temperature are adjusted automatically in the affected quadrant. If the sun is more intense on the driver's side, for example, the air conditioning increases the airflow on this side only. The set climate style is retained on the front-passenger side. This improves thermal comfort as and when required, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

Further outstanding features of the new THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control include automatic pre-entry climate control with the vehicle key if the V-Class has been parked in the sun for a while, the integrated demisting sensor and automatic air recirculation. The demisting sensor checks the humidity and, as soon as there is a risk of the windscreen or side windows misting up, fresh air is fed in automatically and the air distribution is adjusted accordingly. Consequently, there is no longer any danger of the windows misting up, which helps to enhance safety. When the V-Class drives through a tunnel or the windscreen is cleaned, THERMOTRONIC switches to recirculated air automatically to minimise the odours and pollutants entering the passenger compartment.

THERMOTRONIC is configured as front and rear automatic climate control for three zones. The automatic climate control is operated using the air conditioning control panel or the central control panel with touchpad if Audio 20 CD or COMAND Online is fitted.

Easy loading thanks to separately opening rear window

For easy loading and unloading, the V-Class features a first in this segment in the shape of the separately opening rear window attached to the upper tailgate frame. It can be opened and closed independently of the tailgate. This makes loading and unloading easier in two respects: on the one hand, it allows a second loading level, for the weekly supermarket shop, for example; on the other hand, particularly in tight parking spaces, there is no need to open the large tailgate.

The convenient load compartment divider is easy to install and remove. It is covered in hard-wearing dilour carpet and has two recesses, each of which contains a removable, folding shopping basket. The load compartment divider weighs around 18 kilograms and can be loaded with up to 50 kilograms. The loading height beneath it is 445 millimetres.

V. New control and display concept: Multifunctional touchpad with gesture control

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class sees the arrival of the very latest control and display concept in this segment. The major innovation is the multifunctional touchpad on the dashboard. Like a smartphone, it can be controlled using gestures or by inputting letters and numbers. In addition to this, control and display elements that have already been used successfully in numerous Mercedes-Benz passenger car model series are celebrating their premiere in this segment, including COMAND Online with COMAND Controller (rotary pushbutton), the DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering wheel, the central display and the colour display in the instrument cluster.

The newly designed control and display concept is easy and intuitive to use. The control logic and various switch elements have been taken from the new S-Class and are therefore based on the highest levels of user-friendliness and ergonomics. These include the elegant rocker switches on the air conditioning control panel, the pull/push switch modules for the power windows in the door panels and the rotary light switch.

Innovative touchpad with new recognition technology

The touchpad newly developed by Mercedes-Benz is available for vehicles equipped with Audio 20 CD or COMAND Online. It is located together with the central control panel and the COMAND Controller below the central display on the dashboard. The touch-sensitive area, made of scratch-resistant plastic in high-gloss black with a silver shadow real metal surround, blends stylishly into the interior design concept and has the look of a high-quality tablet PC. All telematics functions can be controlled intuitively using gestures or by handwriting. The touchpad therefore offers an additional input option over and above the COMAND Controller and the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control.

The multitouch sensor system recognises one and two-finger gestures such as scrolling, swiping or zooming by spreading or bringing together the fingers. To prevent incorrect entries and increase operating safety, the Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed a new recognition technology that evaluates the sensor signal three-dimensionally. Particular importance was attached to correct identification of the speed when developing the gesture recognition. The V-Class driver can therefore use slow or fast gestures, which lead to different but also reliable movements of the cursor.
Furthermore, users can input letters, symbols and numbers in their natural handwriting thanks to the character detection feature. The touchpad recognises the characters and uses them automatically - for navigation destinations, for example. This speeds up input and generates high added value. There is another advantage: the new telematics control concept with touchpad allows a reduction in the number of buttons in the head unit, making for a tidier appearance.

Ease of operation is also enhanced by three touch-sensitive buttons behind the 65 x 45 mm touch surface, which can be used to call up key functions quickly and directly: the "Back" function, the "Favourites" menu and the short audio menu. The user receives clear haptic feedback when using the operating area or the buttons. To make the system easier to use at night, both the symbols and the borders of the operating area are illuminated indirectly.

Neat and tidy command centre: instrument cluster with multifunction colour display

The instrument cluster consists of two large, analogue circular instruments, each with one small bar graph. The multifunction colour display for the on-board computer information is located between the two circular instruments and displays control and warning messages, especially those from the numerous driver assistance systems such as DISTRONIC PLUS, Traffic Sign Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. There are also comfort indications, the trip computer and messages about operating states.

Central display: high resolution and colour

The information from the telematics system is shown on a high-resolution central display. As in numerous new Mercedes-Benz passenger car models, it is free-standing and located above the central ventilation outlets and the air conditioning control panel.

Two display variants are available, depending on equipment: In combination with the Audio 20 USB or Audio 20 CD system, the monitor diagonal measures 17.8 centimetres. The frame is finished in high-gloss black. A display with a 21.3-centimetre diagonal and high-brilliance resolution is installed in combination with the COMAND Online system. In this case, the frame is galvanised in silver shadow. This display is equipped with special, bonded cover glass. The anti-glare mineral glass is directly joined to the surface of the TFT display using an optical adhesive and a lamination process, so ensuring that no air or dust can get between the display and the glass. This added complexity reduces optical distortion and reflections to almost nothing. The resulting image is particularly detailed and high in contrast.

In addition to manual brightness setting via the COMAND Online menu, both displays have a light sensor for automatic brightness control. As well as displaying telematics functions, the screen available in combination with COMAND Online can display photos and allows manual scrolling similar to a slideshow. New display forms also allow easy control when listening to music. The Coverflow function, for instance, sorts the cover images of the stored music albums in carousel-like form so that the V-Class driver can easily scroll through their music collection. This collection can be very large as there are 10.8 gigabytes of memory available for compressed audio files (mp3, wma, aac).

VI. Infotainment programme: Unique selection that caters to every need

The new V-Class comes with a choice of three infotainment systems, offering a bespoke state-of-the-art solution for all budgets and requirements. At the top of the range are the optional COMAND Online fully integrated multimedia system and the Burmester® Surround Sound system. With these, the V-Class raises the bar in its segment in terms of navigation, internet use and the enjoyment of music.

The latest generation of COMAND Online has fast 80 GB hard-disc navigation, a DVD player, internet access and numerous additional functions. It features an improved photorealistic map display, relaying of traffic data in real time, useful apps and an additional Bluetooth® profile allowing internet access using an iPhone®, for example. It is controlled using the innovative touchpad, the COMAND Controller or the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control.

Real-time traffic reports and easy internet use

In conjunction with COMAND Online the latest traffic information is transmitted to the vehicle in real time by Mercedes-Benz Live Traffic. Thanks to a special communication module, which ensures permanent connectivity to the cloud, the driver of the V-Class receives early information about problems such as traffic jams, traffic volume or other possible delays along the route, allowing them to adjust their route planning in good time.

Internet access via COMAND Online provides substantial added benefit: customers can either browse freely when the vehicle is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz app with pages that load extremely quickly and are also easy to use whilst driving. The integrated apps include Google™ Streetview, Google™ Panoramio, Google™ Local Search and Weather as well as the option of downloading a route previously configured on the PC using Google Maps and sent to the vehicle. Further apps can be enabled via the Mercedes Online Shop (www.shop.mercedes-benz.com).

Audio 20 USB and Audio 20 CD

There are two further audio systems to choose from in the shape of Audio 20 USB (standard) and Audio 20 CD (optional). Standard features on the entry-level Audio 20 USB radio include the twin tuner for interference-free reception and a universal interface for Bluetooth, USB, AUX-in and SD cards. It allows mobile audio devices such as MP3 players or iPods® to be connected to the vehicle's telematics architecture.

The Audio 20 CD system also has an MP3-compatible CD player and, as an option, can be combined with the Burmester® Surround Sound system, Convenience Telephony in the centre console and digital radio (DAB). For the navigation system there is also an optional pre-installation package with GPS receiver, interlinked satellite navigation and aerials.

Burmester® Surround Sound system for an exceptional music experience

The optional Burmester® Surround Sound system offers music lovers an acoustic experience that is unparalleled in this segment. Optimised for the vehicle, this sound system features 16 high-performance speakers including a bass reflex loudspeaker and a 10-channel DSP amplifier with a total output of 640 watts for first-class "Feelgood Sound".

VII. Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: Safety assistance systems on board

Like all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the new V-Class features an extensive range of safety equipment, including numerous innovative driver assistance systems based on sophisticated radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors, first introduced under the name "Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive" in the new E-Class and S-Class. They reduce the risk of hazards such as strong crosswind gusts, the blind spot or insufficient distance to other vehicles to an absolute minimum. The new full size MPV is even as easy to park as a compact car. The intelligently inter-networked assistance systems enhance both comfort and safety – and make the V-Class the safest vehicle in its class.

The new full size MPV is equipped as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn against inattention and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist. With a relatively large and long side area compared with other passenger car models, full size MPVs are more susceptible to the effects of strong crosswinds. Crosswind Assist counters these effects to protect those inside the new eight-seater V-Class. It assists the driver and can compensate for the effects of wind by applying the brakes on the front and rear wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind.

Further assistance systems are available as optional extras. Like Crosswind Assist, most of these are available in this segment for the first time.

Parking made easy: Active Parking Assist

The V-Class makes parking a full size MPV an easy and stress-free affair. Active Parking Assist enables automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. It is an enhanced version of the PARKTRONIC system with Parking Guidance. What's more, the system is also able to manoeuvre the vehicle out of parallel parking spaces all by itself with automatic steering and brake control, assuming the vehicle was parked there automatically previously. This system makes the V-Class unique in its segment.

Everything in view, everything under control: the 360° camera The 360° camera is another USP for the V-Class within its segment. It can be set to switch on automatically when reverse gear is engaged. Four networked short-range cameras are used to provide a bird's-eye view of the V-Class on the central display, allowing a realistic all-round view when parking and manoeuvring. Consequently, even obstacles located below the window line of the V-Class and outside the driver's range of vision can be detected. This helps when approaching kerbs, for example. One camera is mounted centrally at the front end in the radiator grille, plus there is one camera in each of the exterior mirrors and a further camera in the tailgate handle. The virtual viewpoint calculated based on the camera images covers an area of around 3 metres ahead of and behind the vehicle and 2.5 metres on either side of the vehicle.

The display can show various views in addition to the bird's-eye view, including PARKTRONIC information, additional guide lines and steering lines to make manoeuvring easier, and the vehicle's range of movement when the driver turns the steering wheel. If a trailer coupling is fitted, there is also a special view available when reverse gear is engaged to make it easier to manoeuvre the ball head up to the drawbar.

For an even better all-round view: Blind Spot Assist

Thanks to two short-range sensors in the rear bumper, the radar-based Blind Spot Assist can detect vehicles in the driver's blind spot – when changing lanes or overtaking, for example. In such situations, the system gives the driver an audible and visual warning. The warning zone (blind spot) starts near the B-pillar and extends around 3.5 metres to either side of the V-Class and 3 metres beyond the back of the vehicle. The system is activated when the speed reaches 30 km/h.

Prevention of rear-end collisions: COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST

The V-Class offers a further new feature in this segment in the shape of a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which reduces the risk of rear-end collisions. At speeds above 7 km/h, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST sensor system monitors the traffic area ahead of the vehicle - the distance to a stationary obstacle in the direction of travel up to a speed of 70 km/h, and the distance and speed of approach to vehicles in front up to a speed of 200 km/h. If there is a risk of a collision with moving or stopping vehicles, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST gives the driver a visual and audible warning, and calculates the braking power required to avert the collision in the best-case scenario. Braking is initiated at the moment the driver of the V-Class clearly presses the brake pedal.

The safest by a distance: thanks to DISTRONIC PLUS

The DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control system in the V-Class is the first radar-based assistance system to be offered in this segment. It makes the driver's job easier in heavy traffic and also helps to prevent rear-end collisions. To this end, the system controls the speed at the level preselected by the driver between 0 and 200 km/h when the lane is clear. If the radar sensor system detects a slower-moving vehicle within a range of around 200 metres, DISTRONIC PLUS reduces the speed and follows the vehicle in front, maintaining the pre-programmed desired distance. The adaptive cruise control accelerates the V-Class back up to the desired speed when the driver moves into a clear lane or when the vehicle in front increases its speed and the driver follows it whilst maintaining the desired distance.

DISTRONIC PLUS makes life easier for the driver of the V-Class, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. If the system detects the risk of a rear-end collision, it gives the driver a visual and audible warning, and it calculates the braking pressure required for the adaptive Brake Assist to stop the V-Class in time. This braking assistance is available as soon as the driver presses the brake pedal.

The DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control can brake the V-Class with a deceleration of up to 4 m/s² and – if required – to a standstill. The system is then reactivated when the driver either actuates the cruise control lever or briefly presses the accelerator. As DISTRONIC PLUS is a convenience system that only brakes the vehicle with moderate deceleration and also only accelerates the vehicle to a limited extent, the driver receives a visual and audible warning and is prompted to intervene if greater deceleration is required. If the driver applies the brakes following this prompt, adaptive Brake Assist (BAS) intervenes to assist the driver.

Helps to prevent unnoticed lane changes: Lane Keeping Assist

The camera-based Lane Keeping Assist can detect the risk of a vehicle leaving its lane unintentionally and warn the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate. To this end, the system evaluates the images provided by a camera positioned behind the windscreen, which monitors the lane markings. Based on these data and on the activity on the part of the driver that it registers, Lane Keeping Assist determines whether the vehicle is leaving its lane intentionally or unintentionally. The system is active at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h.

Wrong-way warning function to assist the driver: Traffic Sign Assist

Another system Mercedes-Benz uses to help prevent accidents is Traffic Sign Assist, available in conjunction with COMAND Online. The system detects speed-limit signs and no-overtaking signs and can warn the driver if it detects no-entry signs. To do this, the camera inside the windscreen monitors the road signs, including those on overhead gantries or at road works. The image data are compared with the navigation system information and can be displayed both in the instrument cluster and on the COMAND display map view.

If the camera does not detect any speed-limit signs or if a speed limit no longer applies, the legally allowed maximum speed based on the navigation data is displayed. If a no-entry sign is detected, the system's wrong-way warning function gives the driver a visual and audible warning – an effective way of helping to reduce serious accidents caused by "wrong-way drivers".
