Get Ahead on Spring Cleaning with These Car Organization Tips

GRANDVILLE, Mich.–– We know winter is still technically here and spring is just around the corner. This weather doesn't quite call for a windows-open, full-out, detailed clean but it's the perfect time for some simple organization to help get you started! Some of us can neglect keeping our cars tidy throughout the winter because of the cold weather and desire to be inside, on the couch, and bundled up. Let's be honest, some of us can neglect keeping our cars tidy all year long, because that's just how we are! We know we want to keep things in order, but life simply gets in the way. There are ways, however, to combat the excuses. We're talking organization methods. Check out some of the ideas we've put together below and get ahead on spring cleaning with these car organization tips!

1. Baskets

These are the most simple, yet most helpful holder of items. You can pickup baskets at your local grocery/department store, hardware store, or for really cheap at a Dollar store. There are plenty of sizes and materials to choose from, sometimes there are baskets with dividers in them to organize further. Baskets are especially great for emergency kits so everything is in one place!

2. Pill Bottles

When those pill bottles run empty, don't throw them out - save them! They're the perfect size for coins and smaller items like q-tips, Ibuprofen or Advil pills, mints, etc. All those coins laying around in your cup holder could be put into one simple place with a pill bottle for easy access.

3. Cereal Container Trash Basket

You can easily clear out the trash from all the small compartments in your car to get started, but this cereal container trash basket will help keep it all in one place for easy clean up. You can find these containers at grocery/department stores or anywhere you can find kitchen supplies. They come in different sizes, but finding one with a large mouth makes it easy to use. An alternative solution? Hang a 3M Command hook to the side of the center console and hang a plastic or paper bag for garbage.

4. Shoe Organizers

These are great for organizing a variety of items including kids entertainment, maps, emergency items, etc. These shoe organizers can easily be hung by string to the back of a car seat. A bigger shoe organizer like the one shown above can encourage your kids to put things away when they're done with them, especially since it's easy to do!

5. Pencil Pouches

You can easily find these in the school supply section of your grocery/department store, or in an office supply store. These little pouches are perfect for small items. You can attach them all together with a keyring or carabiner to easily keep them together as shown above. A group like this could easily fit in a center console, depending on the size.

6. Empty Altoids, Gum, and Travel Q-Tip Containers

These small containers, similar to the pill bottle idea, work really well for small items that you need to store in your cup holder, center console, or glove box. The Altoids containers can be used to hold first aid items (see these 5 DIY mini emergency kit ideas), and the gum containers can be used to hold cash, house keys, etc. You can even disguise the gum container for security (see this secret car compartment DIY). Lastly, the plastic Q-Tip containers are also great for small items like headphones, hair tires, bobby pins, etc. that you can group together.

7. File Folders

You may not have a ton of documents in your car right at this moment, but a file folder can help keep everything organized. This is especially helpful when you're traveling and have to bring documents like passports, veterinary papers, etc. along with you. You can also store service records and other related items in an organized way. Bonus: if you're old school and still like to carry a paper map, a file folder is perfect for storage!
