The Volvo wagon.  In the 1980s and early-mid 90s, nothing said you were smart about however much money you had quite the way a Volvo wagon did.  Somewhere along the way, Volvo wagons lost that cachet...along with much of the Volvo lineup.  But now, the V90 is back, based on the S90 sedan  that yours truly pretty much lost his mind over last fall.  And it could take a Volvo wagon right back to being that type of understated status symbol for the next couple of decades.

But, as things tend to be (cranky old guys and nostalgists notwithstanding), the new Volvo wagon is better than the old.  The 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6 AWD is more powerful, more comfortable and more capable on and off road than any of its predecessors.

$55,300 gets you a gorgeous vehicle (the S90's lines lend themselves spectacularly well to a wagon), powered by a 316-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.  Not only is there power, but there's remarkable fuel economy for a vehicle of this size (EPA estimate 22 city/30 highway).  Adjustable drive mode settings, 19-inch alloy wheels, Volvo's Sensus information, entertainment and navigation suite, a wi-fi hotspot, a 330-watt, ten speaker high performance audio system, low speed collision avoidance, pedestrian, cycle and large animal detection, Volvo's Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system, a laminated panoramic power moonroof with sunshade, leather upholstered seating surfaces, heated front seats and steering wheel, ten-way power front seats with driver memory, keyless entry, a hands-free tailgate, rear park assist and a rear-view camera, dual-zone electronic climate control and dark walnut wood inlays.

At $55,000, that is a remarkably well-equipped car.  But you can go beyond that with options, and the Volvo press office did.  Our tester came with Osmium Grey Metallic paint ($595), a convenience package including heated washer nozzles, a 360-degree surround view camera, a grocery bag holder, Homelink, a compass, Park Assist Pilot, and interior high level illumination ($1,950), an upgraded Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system ($3,200), a graphical head up display ($900), an outer childseat ($500) and premium air suspension in the rear ($1,200).

With $995 destination charge, the bottom line wound up at $64,640.  Quite a difference.  Frankly, I could make a case for taking it loaded like our tester, or leaving it stock (though I'd almost certainly pop for the upgraded audio system).   What matters is that the Volvo follows the XC90 and the S90's path in terms of making new Volvos desirable objects again.  I can think of worse garages than one that would have both an S90 and a V90 Cross Country parked side by side.

After several years of status quo, Volvo is getting a lot of attention thanks to its newest vehicles---especially the car that sits atop the TireKicker's Best Cars list on the right of this page, the new S90.

It and the XC90 SUV are leading the way to the next generation of Volvo products, but a week in the XC60 is a great reminder that, while they've been around a while, the current-generation Volvos are pretty wonderful vehicles.

The XC60 is a size class down from the XC90...fitting nicely into the midsize crossover segment populated by the Acura MDX, Lexus RX 350, Lincoln MKX, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

As for all that comes after the "XC60" in the name, T6 means it's equipped with a 2-liter supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 302 horsepower, AWD is all-wheel drive and Inscription is the top trim level.  There are T5s, with a 2-liter four that is simply turbocharged, with an output of 240 horsepower.  Those can be had in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.  All T6s are all-wheel drive.

As for the trim levels, there's Dynamic and Inscription, and in the XC60 T6 AWD, both have the same base price of $46,350.  The difference is in the equipment, with Inscription models getting linear walnut wood inlays inside, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, accent lighting, front comfort seats (among the best I've ever sat in) and 20-inch Titania diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Also standard: a 160-watt high performance audio system with 8-speakers, a CD player, HDRadio, SiriusXM Satellite radio and a navigation system, Volvo's City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system, a laminated panoramic roof with power sunshade, leather seating surfaces, eight-way power front seats with lumbar support, keyless entry and drive, a power-operated liftgate, a tilting and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronic parking brake, dual-zone electronic climate control, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, heated power outside rearview mirrors with memory, and 40/20/40 flat-folding rear seats.

The combination of the 2-liter super-and-turbocharged engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission results in decent fuel economy...an EPA-estimated 20 city/27 highway.  And the performance is far more than adequate. Ride and handling are excellent, and noise levels are very low.

Unlike the iPad-like center screen found in the S90 and XC90, the XC60 is still working with buttons and knobs, designed nearly ten years ago, but updated.  And working with them is a reminder that there's nothing wrong with the old way, especially if it was done right the first time, which Volvo's interior was.

Our tester had options, as well...a preferred option package of active dual Xenon headlights with headlight washers, HomeLink, electric folding rear headrests, front park assist and a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area.  Volvo values this at $1,975, but applies an instant option package credit of $625, knocking the price down to $1,350.

We also had the climate package and child booster seats, which brings heated front seats, power child locks for the rear doors, dual outboard two-stage child booster seats with adaptive seatbelts, an interior air quality system, heated windshield washer nozzles, a heated steering wheel and a heated windshield for $1,550.

And then there was the Advanced Package...adaptive cruise control with Queue Assist, collision warning with full auto brake, pedestrian/cyclist detection with auto brake, distance alert, lane departure warning, active high beams, road sign information and an upgraded Harmon/Kardon premium sound system (which sounded very, very good) for $2,500.

But wait, there's more!  The Osmium Grey metallic paint was extra-cost at $560 and there was an upgrade to 20-inch Avior wheels for $250.  With $995 destination charge, that brings the bottom line to $53,555.  And that is pretty much ballpark for this segment.

So why go with the XC60?  It's solid, proven and manages to load itself with luxury and tech without the feeling that you're drowning in any of it.  In a way, as Volvo moves into the new era, the 2017 XC60 is the remaining product that feels like the Volvo we've known for decades.  And that's a reassuring feeling.

By anyone's standards, I am a blessed man.  A beautiful, loving wife,  a gifted son and daughter, two beautiful, bright and charming stepdaughters. My re-marriage this summer has given me some wonderful new relatives, who, after only three years of acquaintance, feel like they've been with me forever.

My day job is at a leader in the field I've wanted to be in since age eight and they seem to find my contributions valuable.  I'm healthy (apart from needing to drop a few pounds).  Every "great lost song" that I spent decades trying to identify and find back in the days of out-of-print vinyl is now in my pocket, along with some brilliant new music (thanks, Spotify!).

I wake up every day in Northern California.  That, alone, would qualify.

And I'm past the point of wanting stuff.  There's a 23-year-old CRT television in our family room.  If it keeps working the rest of my life, I'm fine with it.  My cell provider offered me an iPad for some low figure this spring.  Don't want one.  I have my smart phone and the laptop upon which these words are being written (which I bought this spring on a dirt-cheap employee discount only because my previous laptop...a factory-refurbished nine-year-old model that I'd had for seven years....finally gave up the ghost.

In the words of Sinead O'Connor (whom I have never quoted), I do not want what I haven't got.

I mean, just look at it.  That is a car.  A beautiful car.  One that, by its design, on sight, telegraphs all its virtues...solidity, safety, performance and luxury. I drove it in the Bay Area (where all serious sedans are German or a Tesla and are either black or silver) and got compliments everytime I parked it. The Mussel Blue Metallic paint (a $560 option) is a shade you won't find on any other car...and makes the S90 just that much more distinctive.

And it only gets better when you get inside.

It's like a private jet...a really nice private jet...in here.  Colors, textures, surfaces, all not only top-notch, but a complete step away from what you'll find in Benzes, Bimmers, Audis, Lexii and the like.

And Volvo may be owned by a Chinese company now, but they haven't forgotten their Swedish roots, which have always included the most supportive and comfortable seats you can find inside an automobile.

And then, there's safety. Thirty-five years ago, the image of safety Volvo chose to project was the strength of the structure.  There were TV commercials showing a Volvo sedan being dropped off the side of a building nose-first and the doors still opening when the dust settled.

And, with a clean-sheet design, the Volvo S90 is able to incorporate advanced features that put it at or very near the front of the evolution to autonomy:


And the audio system....Dear Lord,the audio system!  It's an option, and a pricey one at that ($2,650), but the Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound system is among the best I've ever heard.  Pure, clean sound, with the ability to create remarkable acoustic experiences:


The 2.0-liter four, both supercharged and turbocharged, makes 315 horsepower and feels like a much bigger engine.  It returns an impressive EPA estimate of 22 miles per gallon city/31 highway.

So now comes the hard part....affording it.

In the "is it worth it"? spectrum, especially when measured against the competition, my answer is an unqualified "yes".  In fact, compared to other luxury cars, it's a bargain.  But that's relative.

The base price for a Volvo S90 T6 AWD is $52,950.  And that is very reasonable indeed.  It's in the options, which, uncharacteristically for me, I would not be prepared to live without, that the price becomes significantly higher.

$3,300 for the Inscription model.  That gives you active bending lights added to the standard LED headlights with Thor's Hammer (not joking) daytime running lights and automatic highbeams. You also get high-pressure headlight cleaning, illuminated Volvo aluminum sill plates, high-level interior illumination, linear walnut wood inlays, Apple CarPlay and a USB hub, ventilated front seats, leather on the dashboard and upper door panels, power side support and power cushion extension for the front seats, rear side door sun curtains, a four-zone electric climate control and cooled glovebox, laminated side windows, Nappa soft leather upholstery, 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels in silver diamond cut, a color-coordinated Nappa leather key fob and an "Inscription" badge on the trunklid.

$1,950 for the Vision Package.  That's a 360-degree surround-view camera, retractable rear-view mirrors, automatically-dimmed interior and exterior mirrors, blind spot information system and cross traffic alert.

$1,950 for the Climate Package with HUD.  You get heated washer nozzles, a graphical head-up display, heated rear seats (except for the center), and a heated steering wheel.

$1,000 for the Convenience Package. That'd be a power-operated trunklid, HomeLink, a 12-volt power outlet, a compass in the inner rear-view mirror and Park Assist Pilot and Park Assist Front (the rear Park Assist comes standard).

$2,650 for the Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound system.

$560 for the Mussel Blue Metallic paint.

$750 for an upgrade to 20-inch Inscription alloy wheels.

All that, with $995 destination charge, adds up to $66,105.   And another reason to get really, really motivated to improve my finances, because I'm still a firm believer in my dad's formula that you should never buy a car that costs more than half what you make in a year.  And that's assuming you're debt-free.  So, after clearing the decks, $132,210 would be the target.

For those of you hard-working and/or fortunate enough to already be in that bracket, this is the one to have.  It really is that good, that special.  And that's why it is now atop the TireKicker's Best Cars list on the right side of this page.
