20 Years Since the Birth of Racing Puma

August 01, 2018 0

No turbocharger, no all-wheel drive and ‘only’ a 1.7-litre engine, yet the Ford Racing Puma has become something of a cult car amongst performance Ford enthusiasts.

Limited to just 500 cars, the wider arched, 153bhp Racing Puma received rave reviews upon launch, but it came at a price. Considerably more expensive than a standard Ford Puma, only diehard enthusiasts took the plunge. Rumour has it that many of the Ford chassis engineers were keen on buying one for themselves as they rated the chassis so highly.

Ford’s heritage collection model, V1 FRP, is number 1/500 and was used in San Francisco on the media drives to launch the vehicle… echoing the Bullitt-themed TV commercial for the Ford Puma that was aired a few years earlier.

How many of those other 499 still exist though?

Eagle Squadron Mustang GT

July 12, 2018 0

Ford Performance, along with drifting champ Vaughn Gittin Jr. have teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind Eagle Squadron Mustang GT to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force for this year’s Experimental Aircraft Association’s The Gathering fund-raiser and auction on July 26 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

This year’s build is inspired by the Eagle Squadron, a group of U.S. volunteer pilots who flew combat missions alongside the Royal Air Force over Europe from British airfields near Goodwood prior to the United States entering World War II. Gittin, accompanied by Royal Air Force veteran Paul Miller, whose father “Dusty” served in Eagle Squadron in 1941 and 1942, will pilot the supercharged beast up the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb today, then the car will be on display at the Ford booth for this weekend’s event.

Darrell Behmer, Ford Mustang design chief
Supporting young pilots through the Experimental Aircraft Association’s fund-raising auction reflects Ford’s aviation history, tracing back to the company’s early days and the arsenal of democracy during World War II. The Eagle Squadron Mustang GT build with Vaughn and the Ford design team is a great way to honor our heroes and keep the spirit of aviation alive for the next generation of American pilots.

2018 marks the 20th year Ford has supported the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture event and the 10th one-off Mustang it has provided for auction. Notable Ford models inspired by other aviation legends include the 2011 Blue Angels and 2013 Thunderbirds editions. All auction proceeds will be donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s youth education programs, which encourage and support the next generation of pilots. To date, Ford has worked with the organization to raise more than $3 million.

Visually stunning and unmistakably aggressive, the Eagle Squadron Mustang GT – painted in a camouflaged design to match the original Eagle Squadron Spitfire aircraft – features Gittin’s RTR Mustang carbon fiber wide-body kit, and includes front chin spoiler, upper grille with integrated lighting, and Gurney lip added to the Performance Pack rear spoiler. Front turning vanes, dive planes, rocker splitters and lower grille diffusers are also fitted.

Under the hood, a Ford Performance supercharger kit first introduced at the 2017 SEMA show helps the Ford 5.0-liter V8 churn out 700 horsepower and 610 lb.-ft. of torque at 12 psi of boost on 93-octane fuel. The engine is mated to a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission with Ford Performance short shifter, with power delivered to the road via an upgraded heavy-duty rear axle also supplied by Ford Performance.

An RTR Tactical Performance Suspension Package – with in-car adjustable MagneRide dampers, Ford Performance lowering springs and RTR adjustable sway bars – increases grip and lateral acceleration. Staggered RTR Aero 7 two-piece forged wheels with 285/30-ZR20 front and 305/30-ZR20 rear Nitto NT555 tires help keep the beast firmly planted on terra firma.

A custom leather interior features Recaro racing seats with embroidered Eagle Squadron logo. A hand-engraved shift knob made from metal melted down from an F-35 Lightning carries over the Eagle Squadron logo, and a one-of-one hand-engraved badge made from genuine Spitfire aluminum adorns the dashboard.

Vaughn Gittin Jr.
Beyond its menacing looks, this powerful and hungry beast mimics the brute force and maneuverability of an original Royal Air Force fighter jet. I really can’t wait to pilot it up the summit at Goodwood.

Aside from becoming the owner of this one-off Eagle Squadron Mustang GT, the high bidder will receive an all-expense-paid trip for two to Detroit in August to attend the 2018 Ford Woodward Dream Cruise and be presented with the car.

Jack Pelton, CEO and chairman, Experimental Aircraft Association, said Ford has once more come through to help the next generation of pilots find new pathways to flight.
With this Royal Air Force-inspired Mustang GT, Ford has again stepped up with a wonderful tribute to the legacy of flight that will also greatly support EAA’s efforts to encourage the next generation of aviators.

The Gathering is the annual fund-raising event hosted at the Experimental Aircraft Association Aviation Museum in support of the museum and youth aviation programs. To learn more about the Experimental Aircraft Association visit: EAA.org.

Fiesta ST - 'Undertrack'

Fiesta ST hits the road – 400 metres underground

July 10, 2018 0

The performance prowess of the new Fiesta ST is demonstrated by a new film that features an amazing driving location – 400 metres below ground in one of Europe’s largest salt mines.

Shot at a secret location with World Rally Championship driver Elfyn Evans at the wheel, the Fiesta ST is seen slipping, sliding and jumping in the dirt. The sound of the 200PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine is amplified by its surroundings as it tackles a high-speed drop through the narrow, entrance tunnel.

Elfyn Evans
The salt is actually like fine gravel to drive on, quite slippery to be honest, especially on road tyres. You expect it to be claustrophobic but actually it’s quite the opposite, a great place to really enjoy the new Fiesta ST.

Ford Europe's Greatest Driving Roads series has put a range of performance vehicles – including the Ford GT, the Focus RS and the Mustang Convertible – in some of the most stunning environments across the continent – from the Arctic Circle in Norway, to the sunny climes of Mallorca. So far, all the locations have been above ground.

We chose the secret salt mine location for new advert ‘Undertrack’ that sees the car put through its paces within the mine’s 60-kilometre network of tunnels, where temperatures are a constant 16 C and safety precautions required that a skeleton crew was used for the three-day shoot amid strict safety precautions.

Leo Roeks, Ford Performance director
The drama of the tunnels and the chance to show off Fiesta ST’s ability on a different type of surface were a big part of choosing this unique location. It wasn’t a typical race track, it was somewhere we could drive this great car to its full potential.

How would YOUR skills help the Ford Le Mans team?

June 15, 2018 0

Think Like a Racing Driver?

Race strategies, physical conditioning, instant decisions and having the hopes of a team on your shoulders are unique challenges for racing drivers in the sporting world, which require a special kind of character.

John Camilleri - Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team fitness trainer.
You’re dealing with high pressure situations, huge physical challenges and you’re reliant on a large crew to make sure you’re in the best car and best position to do your job as well as possible.
In that sense it’s unlike participating in any other sport. A fighter pilot is a closer comparison, and like a fighter pilot it takes a certain type of person to thrive as a racing driver.

During any race, especially an endurance race like the Le Mans 24 Hours, the whole team needs to perform at their optimum and use their unique skills and personalities in the quest for victory.

Ford at Le Mans 2018

Ford prepares for the toughest Le Mans yet

June 05, 2018 0

When the 2018 Le Mans 24 Hours gets underway next week (June 16-17) the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team will face its greatest challenge yet. The class in which the Ford GTs compete at Le Mans – ‘GTE Pro’ – now boasts 17 of the world’s best GT cars and 51 of the world’s fastest racing drivers, making it the fiercest contest the team has faced so far.

Now in the third year of its successful Ford GT race programme, which has seen Ford Chip Ganassi Racing win at Le Mans in 2016 and finish as runner-up in 2017, the team is ready to take on all challengers.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsport
“It’s rewarding to see all four cars come together as one team every year at Le Mans. It shows the scale of the global effort we launched in 2016 and have been building on since.
Le Mans is always the ultimate challenge but this year it has gone up a level through the sheer size of the opposition. We’re going up against the best that Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Corvette and BMW have to offer and we can’t wait. This is why we race.”

The #66 Ford GT crew of Stefan Mücke (GER), Olivier Pla (FRA) and Billy Johnson (USA) took their first victory in the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa in Belgium last month. Le Mans has been hard on them over the last two years so they hope the Spa win signals a change in their fortunes.

In the #67 Ford GT, Indycar star Tony Kanaan (BRA) joins last year’s runners-up, Andy Priaulx (GB) and Harry Tincknell (GB), and they all have their eye on the top step of the podium.

Already podium finishers in 2018, the drivers of the #68 Ford GT are the history-makers: the crew that took Ford’s first modern-day Le Mans win in 2016. Joey Hand (USA), Sébastien Bourdais (FRA) and Dirk Müller (GER) would love to do the double.

The drivers of the #69 Ford GT got their 2018 campaign off to the best possible start by winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Ryan Briscoe (AUS), Richard Westbrook (GB) and Scott Dixon (NZ) are more than ready for another 24-hour win.

All of the drivers of the Ford GTs have trained hard and know what they have to do at Le Mans. Here they reflect on the past two Le Mans and talk about their aspirations for the 2018 race.

#66 FORD GT: Olivier Pla

"The first year at Le Mans with Ford was tough for us in the #66 GT as we lost two laps in the pits, changing the light panel on the door. We were on the same pace as the other Fords so for sure we missed out on a podium there. Year two was looking really good until around 1 a.m. when we had a rear suspension failure that sent me off at Indianapolis. That cost us around seven laps and that was that!
Our goal for year three is the same as ever: we want to win! The GTE Pro field has never been so competitive so it would be incredible to win this year. We are a strong team with a strong car and good driving crews. Now we just need to make sure everything is perfect and that the luck goes our way. The more you do it, the better you get at it!”

#67 FORD GT: Andy Priaulx

“The first Le Mans with Ford in 2016 was tough for us as we had a gearbox problem on the grid so our race was almost done before it started. The second one was great for us though, as we had a really good run and a bit of good fortune on the last lap, taking second place.

This year’s race looks like it will be the toughest yet, but to win under circumstances like that is amazing. I’d love to stand on the top step at Le Mans; I’ve had a third and a second there and a few years ago I led the race for 23 of the 24 hours! There are another 16 GTE Pro cars, each with three drivers who are all saying the same thing, so it’s going to be a thriller! You learn something new every time you do Le Mans. It’s one of those events that you have to work out. This will be my fifth and every year it’s gets better as you have more experience, but it doesn't get any easier!”

#68 FORD GT: Joey Hand

“The first year stands out for me because we won. Ford has this incredible history at Le Mans and now we are part of it. We were able to write our own piece and lock ourselves down in the history books and, for me, that’s pretty cool. As I get older and I’m not driving any more, that’s something that’ll always be there. We weren’t able to race for the win last year so we want to do it this year. You never know how many times you’re going to race at Le Mans so you have to take advantage of every opportunity.
Every year we get better and better as a team and as you get comfortable, you do better. We know more about this race now, from where we stay, the routine we have, knowing where everything is, knowing how scrutineering works. The more comfortable you are, the less you’re wondering what’s happening next. I’ve always said I think comfort produces results. Everything comes together to produce a result.”

#69 FORD GT: Ryan Briscoe

“Year one was incredible for us. We had a really strong race with a rookie team performing like absolute champions. To finish with two of our cars on the podium was surreal. I remember the second year we just didn’t have the performance to win the race, so now we want to win! We set the standards pretty high in year one so anything less isn’t a goal anymore. I think we’re off to a great start, winning the Daytona 24 and finishing second with the #66 car.
It doesn’t really feel different to go to Le Mans in year three. I think on a personal level you never change your approach, no matter how many times you go. The prep work and everything that goes with it is the same. You can’t relax; you can’t feel like it’s year three and take it easy. I think Le Mans, like any big race, will always throw something at you that you’ve never seen before, and that’s what you have to be ready for. I do think year one was extra special. There was a lot about year one: the anticipation of it, the fact it was the 50-year anniversary since 1966, and Ford’s return for the first time since back in the 1960s, which made year one quite unique.”

Driving the road to nowhere

May 08, 2018 0

Rising to over 1,800 metres above sea level, the road from the town of Guarcino to the ski resort at Campocatino bustles with snow-lovers during winter months. However, for the rest of the year Via Campocatino is a barely used mountain road just 80 kilometres east of Rome that’s made for driving.

“Stock up with Amaretti biscuits in Guarcino – one of Italy’s oldest towns – and prepare for a very twisty, very challenging drive to the top,” said  journalist Steve Sutcliffe, who ventured there in Ford's new Fiesta ST for the latest film in Ford’s ‘Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads’ series.

Reach the top and views of the Monti Velino nature reserves in the north, and the mountain ranges of Lazio to the south east can be found. Rome itself can be seen to the north west.

Steve Sutcliffe:
If you’re there on a cloudless evening the sky will be awash with stars; you even pass an astrological observatory on the way to the top that collaborates with observatories from around the world tracking asteroids, that’s how little light pollution there is here.

This is the eighth film in the series which has seen Sutcliffe drive everything in the Ford Performance catalogue, from Ford GT supercar across the stunning Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway to a Focus RS across Blakey Ridge in North Yorkshire, UK. As the first Italian road to be featured, the stunning Via Campocatino scored a maximum ten out of ten for scenery and thrill factor, with an overall score of 53 out of 60, the joint fourth highest of the series.

The latest hot hatch Tech secrets - Ford's All-new Fiesta ST

March 12, 2018 0

Today +Ford Europe released more details about the tech that makes their new Fiesta ST hot hatch even more fun to drive.

Sharper changes in direction are aided by new springs developed from scratch, and the Fiesta ST sprints out of corners faster than ever, thanks to a clever limited-slip differential that sends the engine’s power to the wheel with most grip.

We told you before about the supercar-inspired Drive Modes that can change the Fiesta ST’s character from sensible school-run hatchback to racer at the press of a button. Now Ford is revealing their Launch Control tech, that helps track-driving fans get perfect starts off the line.

And Ford's new 200 PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine means you’ll hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 6.5 seconds.

World Rally Championship driver Louise Cook took the All-new Fiesta ST for a spin around Ford's Lommel Proving Ground.

Lost gravel road rediscovered with the Focus RS

February 13, 2018 0

How far would you travel in search of the perfect road?

After naming seven of Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads+Ford Europe expanded their search to bring you something from China to add to your bucket-list – a lost track in the mountains of Guizhou province.

Climbing 350 metres in just over four kilometres, and with a dizzying 24 blind hairpin bends, Stilwell Road was the perfect road to put the 350 PS Focus RS to the test.

During World War Two, this road was a vital Allied supply route, but it lay forgotten for half a century.

These days, its loose gravel hairpins are mostly empty, making it the perfect playground for the Focus RS and expert driver– once safely closed off to other traffic, of course.

The ultimate Ford Performance track showdown

January 29, 2018 0

It’s the ultimate track showdown: Eight models from the Ford Performance global line-up pushed to their limits on a circuit together for the very first time.

A post shared by Ford Europe (@fordeurope) on

The sequence was filmed in partnership with Castrol Edge during a tight four-hour window, during which all eight Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team drivers took time-out from a pre-season Ford GT race car tyre test to shoot.

Andy Priaulx, Harry Tincknell, Olivier Pla and Stefan Mücke from the World Endurance Championship, and Dirk Müller, Joey Hand, Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, each took the wheel of a Ford Performance model – setting off at intervals and culminating in an eight-way battle through the final bends and finish straight. The time trial was the first and probably only chance to find out if a Fiesta ST could beat a Le Mans-winning Ford GT race car.

At the Motorland race circuit near Barcelona, Spain, the Ford F-150 Raptor; Fiesta ST, all-new Fiesta ST, Focus RS, new Mustang GT, Mustang GT350R, Ford GT road car and Ford GT race car go head-to-head in a staggered time trial around one lap of the 5.345 km circuit.

Ford extends it's commitment to WRC

January 11, 2018 0

Ford has extended it’s commitment to WRC with Ford Performance Support for the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team in 2018.

Today +Ford Motor Company announced a new agreement to supply extended technical and financial support to long-term motorsport partner +M-Sport – winner of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in 2017 with the EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC.

Starting in 2018, the +M-Sport Ford World Rally Team led by Malcolm Wilson OBE – one of the most successful names in motorsport – and based at Dovenby Hall, Cockermouth, U.K., will benefit from additional technical support from the global Ford Performance organisation at Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, U.S., led by Mark Rushbrook, global director of Motorsport.

The increased backing from Ford is a key driver in MSport’s retention of Sébastien Ogier – 2017 FIA WRC Drivers’ champion – for the 2018 season. Ogier and upcoming talent Elfyn Evans will lead the team, alongside their respective co-drivers Julien Ingrassia and Daniel Barritt, in the Ford Fiesta WRC.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Motorsport
Ford’s 20-year relationship with M-Sport has delivered unparalleled success at all levels of rallying, something we’re very proud of, and has also established Fiesta as the standard for rally competitors around the globe. Last year we supported M-Sport with the development of the all-new Fiesta that went on to campaign to an FIA championship win. For 2018, we’re excited to be able to provide even greater support.

Ford has been a continuous partner with M-Sport since 1997. As the Ford-appointed specialist in rally-sport, M-Sport produces Ford vehicles for rally competition in several classes, from FIA R2 to the pinnacle in WRC. Almost 400 M-Sport developed Ford Fiestas are currently competing in rally-sport globally.

Malcolm Wilson OBE, M-Sport managing director.
We’ve enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Ford over the years and it’s great to see that support increase as we look to defend our FIA World Rally Championship titles in 2018. In Sébastien and Elfyn we have another strong line up and the added technical support will allow us to progress the development of the Ford Fiesta WRC. The competition will be closer than ever but I’m confident that, together with the support of our partners, we can produce the same high levels of performance and reliability that delivered so much success in 2017.

Powered by Ford’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, the Ford Fiesta WRC rally car is based on the all-new Fiesta, on sale across Europe in distinctive versions including the stylish Fiesta Titanium, the Ford Performance-inspired Fiesta ST-Line and the upscale Fiesta Vignale.

The all-new Fiesta ST – featuring a 200 PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine and Drive Modes – goes on sale in 2018.

Think like a racing driver – win at life

December 07, 2017 0

The secret to succeeding in high pressure situations might be found in the minds of racing drivers, according to Ford's latest investigation.

Using EEG (electroencephalography) headsets on a number of our professional drivers – including five-time FIA World Rally Championship winner Sébastien Ogier and three-time FIA World Touring Car Championship winner Andy Priaulx – we monitored the brain activity that deals with focus as they took on a racing simulator.

We then took some everyday drivers and did the same, which proved racing drivers minds were far more capable at dealing with the stresses involved.

However, with simple breathing and meditation exercises, plus a visualisation technique that uses keywords to describe the task ahead, the everyday drivers repeated the test… and improved their focus and performance by as much as 50 per cent, almost on a par with the pros.

Based on the research, we’re now developing an EEG-equipped racing helmet for our pro drivers, where brain activity data can be transmitted back to the team during a race alongside other in-car car telemetry. Understanding a driver’s mental state might just be the next frontier in performance.

So next time you’re faced with a tough interview or an important presentation, just get into the mindset of a racing driver and you’ll be winning at life.
