How to Get Organized in the New Year

GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––Unless your reputation is "organization queen", there are probably a few areas of your life that could use a little work. Each and every New Year, someone out there will put "get organized" on their resolutions list. Although resolutions can be stuff to stick to, a few small steps and investments can help you reach and keep your goals beyond the month of January. Here are a few tips on how to get organized for the New Year!

How to Get Organized in the New Year

1. Realize that habits take a while to acquire. In fact, it takes on average 66 days for a behavior to become automatic. That's a little over two months of repeating this behavior you want to become a regular practice. It may seem daunting, but put your organizational mind into practice and make a check sheet (daily, weekly, monthly, or the full 66 days). Each time you complete a task you can mark it as done so that you know you're meeting the requirements of habit making. Completing and marking off even the smallest of habits like cleaning or picking up your house for 10 minutes a day counts!

2. Segment your organization goals. It's okay to say you want to organize your life in 2018, but your life consists of many areas and once you realize the work involved, this goal can be a little overwhelming. Start with the area you want to organize most. Is it your documents or personal files? Maybe it's your kitchen or your kids' play area? Figure out a starting point and don't touch anything else until you've completed that area. You can make your segments as small or as large as you deem doable. For instance, if you want to reorganize your kitchen you can segment it by utensil drawer, refrigerator, dishes, etc.

3. You can also dedicate yourself to, as mentioned in tip #1, a certain amount of time to work on something to make it easier to do! If you're trying to tackle a large project like cleaning and reorganizing a garage, basement, or child's bedroom, set aside small increments of time to work on it. It'll seem much less intimidating to work on the project for 20 minutes a day than to spend an entire day exhausting yourself over it. This way you'll be less likely to procrastinate, too.

4. If your goals involve physical reorganizing, begin by sorting, categorizing, and tossing before you invest in any new materials. You might have forgotten about a mail organizer you bought online last year, or you might realize that you can repurpose that old coffee mug as a utensil holder. There's a Goodwill drop-off location in Grandville, and other organizations in the Grand Rapids area that will take gently used household items, clothing, books and media, etc.

5. Simplify your possessions! Even if you're not trying to downsize, getting rid of some things can help you lead a more organized life in general. While you're sorting through your things, ask yourself "does this item make me happy?" and "does this item have a use?"- if your answer is "no" or "someday", put the item in a throwaway or donation pile. Keeping items that you might have a use for someday is a dangerous practice and will lead to accumulating things you'll never actually use or need because life changes.

6. Once you've cleaned out the old, invest in methods that'll help you keep organized. Whether it's a budgeting app that costs $2, a special planner that costs $30, or new storage containers and tools for that costs $100+, invest in quality, well-reviewed, easy-to-use, and attractive items you'll actually want to use. Carefully assess your space as well so you know the items that you invest in properly fit and work in the space. Keep all your receipts available for any returns needed.

7. Use the advice in tip #1 to put new habits into practice! Give yourself small tasks, be mindful and motivated, and take responsibility for their completion. If you want something to happen bad enough you'll make it a reality.
