Celebrate National Picture Book Month with These 9 Classics

GRANDVILLE, Mich.,––The weather has grown cold and the leaves are continuing to fall, which means it's the perfect time to snuggle up at home with a good book! November is National Picture Book Month and was started as a literacy initiative for young children. Visual literacy is based around the idea that pictures can be read, and can be used as an introduction to this very prevalent form of communication. If you have kids at home, you can celebrate National Picture Book Month together with these 9 classics:

1. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

"In this classic of children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day."

2. Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

"A timeless classic about the magic of boundless love that's been treasured for generations."

3. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

"Maurice Sendak's Caldecott Medal-winning picture book has become one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children's books of all time. A must for every child's bookshelf."

"A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck--all parade across the pages of this delightful book."

5. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

"Since it was first published fifty years ago, Shel Silverstein's poignant picture book for readers of all ages has offered a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return."

6. Corduroy by Don Freeman

"Don Freeman's classic character, Corduroy, is even more popular today then he was when he first came on the scene in 1968. This story of a small teddy bear waiting on a department store shelf for a child’s friendship has appealed to young readers generation after generation."

7. Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman

"Reading goes to the dogs in this timeless Beginner Book edited by Dr. Seuss. From big dogs and little dogs to red, green, and blue dogs, dogs going up and dogs going fast . . . who knew dogs were so busy? "

8. Blueberris for Sal by Robert McCloskey

"Sal and her mother a picking blueberries to can for the winter. But when Sal wanders to the other side of Blueberry Hill, she discovers a mama bear preparing for her own long winter. Meanwhile Sal's mother is being followed by a small bear with a big appetite for berries! Will each mother go home with the right little one?"

& especially for the upcoming holidays:

9. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

"Through dark forests, over tall mountains, and across a desert of ice, the Polar Express makes its way to the city atop the world, where the boy will make his Christmas wish."
