Gotta hand it to Toyota.  In the decade or so where the Americans got out of the midsize truck business entirely and Nissan allowed the Frontier to roll on unchanged, Toyota kept improving and refining the Tacoma.  Now, with Ford and Chevy rushing back into the segment, and Ford promising a Raptor version of the Ranger, Toyota's reminding the world that the gold standard for off-roading midsize pickups is none other than the Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4X4 Double Cab.

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad 4X4 Double Cab's base price is $36,115...which buys an exceptionally well-equipped truck.  The 3.5-liter V6 makes 275 horsepower.  There's a six-speed automatic transmission (the EPA estimates 18 mpg city/22 highway), a part-time four-wheel drive system with two speed electronically controlled transfer case, off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, multi-terrain select crawl control, hill start assist control, 16-inch machined contrast alloy wheels and off-road tires, a towing receiver hitch, 4/7-pin connector, trailer sway control, sway warning system,  engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, and a 130-amp alternator.

We are, as of this writing, about three or four months away from an all-new generation of Toyota's popular small SUV, the RAV4.  So our last experience with the current-gen is likely to be the week we just completed in the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE AWD.

The Hybrid model is something of a newcomer to the lineup, having been introduced in 2016.  We drove it then,  and nothing has really changed about the vehicle itself or our opinion of it.  If we were going to buy a RAV4, we'd spring for the hybrid.  Not much additional cost takes you from 22 mpg in the city to 34...a significant jump.

The base price for the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE AWD is $32,185 and that covers a lot of standard equipment:  Selectable drive modes (EV, ECO and SPORT), Toyota Safety Sense (pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, steering assist, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control), the Star Safety System (Enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and smart stop technology), blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.  There are also 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a height-adjustable power liftgate, a power moonroof, roof rails, and privacy glass, as well as a dual-zone climate control with air filter, an Entune audio system with a six-point-one inch touchscreen, backup camera, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, SofTex trim, heated front seats, reclining and flat-folding second row seats, smart key with pushbutton start, three 12-volt power outlets and one USB port, and SE floormats, door sill protectors and a sport shiftknob.

In fact, the equipment in standard form is so complete that our tester had just one option...a tonneau cover to keep valuables in the rear compartment out of sight.  That was $90.  Fold in $995 delivery processing and handling fee and the bottom line comes to a reasonable $33,270.   There's strong temptation to wait for the all-new '19...but the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE would be a fine choice.

Twenty-three years ago, Toyota began the small crossover SUV revolution in earnest with the original RAV4. It was inexpensive, utilitarian and rugged.

Today?  Pretty much the same formula.  Except....if you're willing to go all the way and check all the boxes...you can also get one that could very nearly pass for a model from Toyota's luxury division, Lexus.

2018 Toyota RAV4 Platinum.

That would be the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Platinum...and we just spent a week in a front-wheel drive model (all-wheel drive is also available, for a bit more money).

The base price of $34,750 brings you the 2.5-liter, 178 horsepower four-cylinder found under the hood of all 2018 RAV4s, with a six-speed automatic transmission...a powertrain with an EPA estimate of 23 miles per gallon city, 29 highway. 

There's also Toyota's Safety Sense (pre-collision, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, steering assist, automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control),  the Star Safety System (enhanced stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and smart stop technology), a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, tail lamps and daytime running lights, a foot-activated power liftgate, a power moonroof, roof rails and privacy glass.

Inside, the Platinum-spec standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control with air filtration, a JBL/Entune audio system with navigation, a birds'-eye view camera, Platinum floor mats and doorsill protectors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, SofTex-trimmed power adjustable driver seat with memory settings, heated front seats and steering wheel, reclining and flat-folding second row seats, a five-door Smart Key system with pushbutton start, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink.

Mrs. TireKicker and I drove it from TireKicker World Headquarters in Folsom, California the 207 miles to Monterey for the Western Automotive Journalists Media Days and found it comfortable, quick and smooth.  Even after a day of driving high-end machines, getting back into the RAV4 was no letdown.

Optional equipment on our tester was very limited---$395 for the Blizzard Pearl paint, $90 for a tonneau cover and $95 for a cargo mat.  With $995 delivery processing and handling fee, the bottom line was $36,325.  Yes, that's a high-water mark for this class of vehicle....and perilously close to $40,000.  But if you're not buying your vehicles by the pound or the inch, the RAV4 Platinum makes a strong case for being worth the money.

The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

Let's give credit where credit's due.  Toyota has done a great job with its mid-cycle refresh of the Highlander.  What had been a heavy, unflattering nose has been smoothed out, the interior is a nicer place to do the business of driving, and...in the case of the Hybrid, fuel economy has improved and the base price has been lowered.

That last part is especially good news, because it makes the Highlander Hybrid Limited Platinum AWD a more attractive proposition when compared to its gasoline-powered equivalent.

A petrol-powered 2018 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum AWD has a base price of $46,660 and an EPA fuel economy estimate of 20 city/26 highway.  Choose the hybrid at $48,280  (a $1,620 difference) and the fuel economy leaps to 29 city/27 highway.

This, my friends, is a major step forward, since, in 2014, the difference between the then-top-of-the-line Highlander Limited and Highlander Limited Hybrid was $6,200...which made justifying the improvement in fuel economy considerably harder.

The refresh brought a more modern, comfortable interior, and in Limited Platinum trim, it's all top-drawer materials along with Toyota's legendary fit and finish. 

There are no options, so with $995 delivery processing and handling fee, the bottom line rang in at $49,275.

So...on the sweet side of $50K (a bargain for this size class of SUV these days), fully loaded and with a hybrid cost/benefit equation that makes some serious sense?  Sold.
