2019 NISSAN TITAN

February 25, 2019 0

What is it: The Nissan Titan XD is basically a beefed-up version of the Titan. It sits somewhere between full-size and heavy-duty territory, though capacity-wise it's closer to the former. Features like a very useful Utilitrack channel system and lockable in-bed boxes make tying down and tucking away precious cargo easy. This truck is also able to accept a gooseneck trailer hitch.

Key Competitors: Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tundra

Base Price: $55,775 As-Tested Price: $62,590

Full review: Nissan Titan XD Pro 4X

Highlights: This Titan XD is equipped with the Cummins 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 and the off-road-oriented Pro-4X trim. That means that, once you hoist yourself into the cabin, there's no step bar, so consider keeping a small step-stool in the back -- you'll be able to tow up to 12,430 pounds (or 12,550 with the gooseneck hitch).
Nissan Titan XD interiorOur Opinion: My 2019 New Year's resolution is to stop complaining about how big and heavy and expensive pickup trucks have become. I get it. You get it. Everybody gets it. Seeing as I drove this Nissan Titan XD in the last few days of 2018, though, and that it is big, heavy and expensive, I could probably get away with it one last time ...
But in the interest of self-improvement, I'll try to frame my chief criticism differently: The Titan XD -- especially when equipped with the 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel -- asks you do without much of the refinement of today's current crop of well-behaved, full-size pickups, yet it doesn't give you the full range of benefits and capabilities of a heavy-duty truck in return. That makes it a questionable value proposition, especially at $62,590 as equipped.
The Titan XD was never going to be a mass-market truck. By design, it's a sort of midway point between a full-size and a heavy-duty pickup. The XD gets an ostensibly heavier-duty Aisin six-speed versus the regular Titan's seven-speed, bigger brakes, the ability to accept a gooseneck trailer and so on. One of its marquee features is an available Cummins diesel engine and the corresponding Cummins badges on the side (a 5.6-liter gasoline V8 is standard).
You can theoretically tow 12,550 with this truck as equipped. That may well be overkill for most buyers, but even so, encroachment from the full-size side makes the ride and comfort sacrifices of the Titan XD that much harder to justify. A properly configured Ford F-150 with an EcoBoost V6 can supposedly tow up to 13,000 pounds, for one extreme example. With its bumpy ride over anything but smooth pavement and a 53.8-foot (!) turning diameter, the Titan XD feels more like a something in the full-on HD class. If I had to describe the sensation of nudging it through suburbia, I'd say it's a bit like waddling around wearing a vehicular fat suit. The around-view monitor, part of the $1,545 Premium Package, is absolutely mandatory if you drive (and park) anywhere more populous than Wyoming. Your average full-size Ford/Ram/Chevy, or even the non-XD Titan, isn't sports car-nimble, but it's generally easier to live with.
Ah, but what about the 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel V8? It has the right numbers on paper and sounds suitably diesely from behind the wheel. I don't doubt that it can tow what Nissan says it can tow. Trouble is, I found it very easy to bog the truck down while cruising around at lower speeds with no load (e.g., routine around-town driving). Whip around a corner at 15-20 mph, put your foot down and ... hey, where's the grunt? The specs say the engine kicks out 555 lb-ft of torque from just 1,600 rpm, so I have to assume it's all getting lost somewhere in the guts of that six-speed auto. Once you get it up to speed, it's all good.

It wouldn't be fair to call the Titan XD a bad truck. It just has a somewhat baffling mission profile. In building it, Nissan must be betting that some nontrivial number of buyers want almost, but not all of, the capability of an HD truck in a slightly, but not too much, smaller package. Given the size of the truck market, there is likely some number of buyers who need this exact combination of features and figures.

For everyone else, you're going to give up much of the ride refinement of today's full-size trucks for a little bit more towing capability and a lot of bigness. A full-sized pickup, including the non-XD Titan, can do more than majority of buyers will ever ask of it. Those that need more will find a range of HD trucks to suit their needs. What edge-case users are caught in the middle? I'm not exactly sure, but that's where the Titan XD is parked. Probably taking up two spaces.

More Than Just One Big Boat: The 2018 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve 4WD

July 23, 2018 0

The 2018 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve 4WD.
Webster's defines "armada" as "a fleet of warships".  Nissan's largest SUV kinda comes off that way.  Describing it as a "boat" somehow feels inadequate.

That's both bad and good.  Bad because it looks and feels like something from an earlier era of SUV, one before the double-whammy of the recession and high gas prices ten years ago prompted redesigns of full-size SUVs that emphasized (relative) lightness and efficiency.  Good, because, in this era of car-based crossovers, anyone who longs for the good old days of a truck-based full-sized rig will likely have the Armada on his or her short list.

Rear 3/4 view of 2018 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve 4WD
2018 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve 4WD.
Nissan's making the most of its 2018 Armada, offering four different trim levels in either two-or-four-wheel drive, all with a 5.6-liter V8 making 390 horsepower and a seven-speed automatic transmission.  EPA mileage estimates, as you might imagine, are on the low side...14 city/19 highway for two-wheel drive, 13/15 for four-wheel drive.  The last time we reviewed an Armada was the 2011 model, which the EPA said was good for 12 city/18 highway.  So, only a little progress in the city and a big step backward on the highway.

Those eight different models (SV, SL, Platinum and Platinum Reserve in two-or-four-wheel drive) have widely varying pricing.  The two-wheel drive SV's base price is $46,090.  Our tester, the top-of-the-line Platinum Reserve 4WD starts at $65,090.  Not only is that a chunk of change, but it puts the Armada right up against its upscale cousin, the Infiniti QX80, which starts, in four-wheel-drive form, at $67,850.

The good news for the Armada buyer is that's pretty much the starting and ending price, apart from $1,295 destination charges, while the Infiniti can be optioned up to the mid-and-upper 80-thousand dollar range.

Nissan Intelligent Rear View Mirror
Nissan Intelligent Rear View Mirror.
New for 2018, and a first for any Nissan vehicle, is the Intelligent Rear View Mirror (I-RVM).  It's a standard rear-view mirror, but push a switch at the bottom and it becomes a monitor connected to a high-resolution camera at the back of the vehicle.  The advantage is that when the rear window is dirty or subjected to glare or weather conditions, the camera gives a clearer view of what's behind you.

Cool mirror.  But what about the SUV around it?

Well, TireKicker was founded ten years ago on the principle that every vehicle is the right vehicle for someone.  We can think of a lot of full-size SUVs that handle better, and are more space and fuel-efficient.  But, the Armada had its best sales month in its 13-year history...and by a large margin...last month (June, 2018).  And the sales figures have been, with the exception of one or two months, the best in a decade since the current generation hit showroom floors in the fall of 2016.   It sells only about a third as many copies as the best-selling Chevy Tahoe, but there's clearly a market for Armadas.

Progress: The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 4WD

June 26, 2018 0
Front 3/4 view of 2018 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 4WD
The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 4WD.
Refreshed significantly for 2017, Nissan isn't letting any grass grow under the feet...um, tires...of the 2018 Pathfinder. This year brings a host of new features.

Rear 3/4 view of 2018 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 4WD

The 284-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and Continuously Variable Transmission are the same as last year, as is the EPA fuel economy estimate of 19 miles per gallon city/26 highway.   The new stuff?

Standard automatic emergency braking, standard Intelligent Cruise Control and NissanConnect with Navigation and services (now standard on SL in addition to Platinum), four more USB ports (for a total of six), two new colors (Scarlet Ember and Midnight Pine) and one potentially life-saving feature.

It's called Rear Door Alert.  If the system detects that the rear door was opened before driving, and you don't open it again at the end of the trip, the system will remind you that something (valuables, a pet or a child), might be in the back seat.  It's standard on the 2018 Pathfinder and will make its way to all Nissan models in the coming years.

Base price has gone up as a result of the additions, from $43,560 to $44,010, but there's a lot more than $450 worth of new stuff, so Nissan's arguably cutting the price from 2017.

Our tester had extra-cost options:

  • Splash guards ($175)
  • Premium paint ($395)
  • Nissan Mobile Entertainment (dual eight-inch DVD monitors and players, wireless headphones, wireless remote controls, one HDMI jack and an additional USB port, plus rear headphone jacks with volume control)
  • Carpeted floor mats ($235)
  • Illuminated kick plates ($365)
With $960 destination charges, the bottom line came to $47,840.

The Pathfinder is comfortable, roomy and a capable four-wheeler.   At this level of equipment, the price is a good value.
