The Royal Malaysia Police, or better known here as Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) recently acquired 15 units of Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4-litre SUV. The SUVs were actually contributed by PLUS Highway for the traffic enforcement on Malaysian highways.

Value for the dollar.  That's what the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is all about.  As we've noted in previous reviews, when judged against the competition for features and freshness, the Outlander is fighting a losing battle.  This is a vehicle introduced five years ago that, because of Mitsubishi's financial straits at the time, was far from cutting edge then. 

But there are people in 2018 for whom a brand-new 2013 vehicle with a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty at a significant discount would be exactly the right thing...and the Outlander fills that role like no other.

Previous reviews of the Outlander, including last year's trek over Donner Pass in a snowstorm, have been of the GT model with the 3.0-liter, 224-horsepower V6 and six-speed automatic with paddle shifters.  This time, we drove the SEL model with the 2.4-liter, 166-horsepower four mated to a CVT.

The absence of 58 horsepower in a vehicle this size is, of course, noticeable, but it performs well enough in everyday driving that we wouldn't rule out getting the four, especially when making that choice saves some significant money. 

Choosing the top-of-the-lne SEL S-AWC (all-wheel control) saves $4,100 over the base price of the 3.0 GT.  Fuel economy improves too, from 20 city/27 highway to 24 city/29 highway.

Our tester gave back most of that price advantage with the addition of the SEL Touring Package (forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, power glass sunroof with sunshade and tilt, a nine-speaker, 710-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system, a multi-view camera, LED headlights, LED foglights and a heated steering wheel) for $3,000.  The Diamond White Pearl paint was another $200 and carpeted floormats added another $125. 

The options essentially equipped our SEL like a GT, apart from the engine and the transmission.
With $940 destination and handling, the bottom line was $32,260...which is $1,830 less than the GT we drove last year.  At a time when you can spend more than this for RAV4s and CR-Vs,  smaller vehicles that carry fewer people and less of their things, the Outlander once again makes a strong value argument.

Sixteen months ago, I wrote about how the Mistubishi Outlander GT, despite winning on value arguments, was rapidly showing its age.  I stand by that review.  But I also have a renewed appreciation for the Outlander GT, what it can do, and how (comparatively) little it costs.

As usual, deeper appreciation comes with experience.  In this case, it was an overnight trip from Folsom (suburban Sacramento) to Reno, Nevada...to see Stevie Nicks and the Pretenders open the second leg of their tour (Mrs. TireKicker's Christmas present).

With two concert tickets purchased back in December, plus a non-refundable night in a hotel room in the Biggest Little City in the World, actually getting over the Sierra in February was a priority.  Those of you who live elsewhere may have seen in the news that California's long-running drought has come to an abrupt halt---with record rain and snow.

It's worth remembering that the route to Reno takes you over Donner Pass, named for the Donner Party, only half of whom made it to California in 1847 (allegedly by eating the other half to stay alive).  They were trapped in a snowstorm---and it was only late October.   Here's what noon on February 23 looked like at the town closest to Donner Pass...Truckee, California:

There were chain controls in effect for about 25 miles of our journey, but fortunately, the California Highway Patrol allowed four-wheel-drive vehicles with mud and snow tires...and that means our Outlander GT S-AWC (all-wheel control) was good to go.  With heated seats and steering wheel, automatic wipers and lights and a seemingly bottomless windshield washer reservior (filled with freeze-resistant washer fluid), we were able to just relax and enjoy the beauty.

The base price of the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S-AWC is $31,695.  That brings a lengthy list of standard equipment, including a great-sounding nine-speaker 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system, Apple Car Play, the aforementioned heated seats, micron-filtered climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels and a power glass sunroof.

The one option package our tester had was the same one in last year's car...the GT Touring Package (multi-view camera system, forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic highbeams and the heated steering wheel)...but the price on that package has been slashed from $3,350 to $1,500.   And that meant the bottom line for this year's car (with $895 destination and handling charges) was less than last year's....$34,090....which only strengthens the Mitsu's value argument.

Yes, a six-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission is old-think and only returns so-so mileage (EPA estimate 20 city/27 highway), and yes, most of the Outlander GT says "2011" instead of "2017".  But you'll be hard pressed to find a three-row, all-wheel drive SUV with this level of equipment for $34,000...heck, even $40,000...anywhere else.

I'm tempted to call this my third annual fond farewell to the Mitsubishi Lancer.  The car...and for a while, its maker...were on life support for the better part of a decade, and the smart money was that the 2014 Lancer would be the last.

And then came the 2015, and the 2016 and now the 2017.

The problem has been that this is essentially a decade-old car with some retrofitting that has allowed it to be to a greater or lesser extent somewhat competitive.  If that sounds like a lot of qualifiers, it is. The Lancer's highest and best use was as the platform for the pavement-ripping EVO, a street-legal rally car that was as much fun as one can have fully clothed.  And with the EVO dead a few years now, what we have here is an econobox two or three generations behind the competition.  Not bad by any means, generally reasonably priced, and blessed by a captive credit arm that is known for its lenient attitudes toward prospective buyers with less than stellar credit scores.  That last part is responsible for moving as many Lancers as have been moved the past few years.

At best, the word was that Mitsubishi didn't have the development money to replace the Lancer.  At worst, the word was that Mitsubishi didn't have the money, period (especially after its Asian fuel-economy scandal) to continue selling cars here in the United States.  The entire brand was on deathwatch in North America.

But now, Renault-Nissan has bought a 34% interest in Mitsubishi.  Meaning the brand stays and the Lancer could be replaced by a new car in its size class.  Most likely something sold elsewhere in the world as a Renault or Nissan.  There's even talk the EVO could return on that new platform.

Absent an official announcement, though, the Lancer remains in limbo...with the possibility that 2017 could actually be the end.   You can get a base Lancer for $17,795...but our tester was the top-of-the-line 2.4 SEL AWC, which stands for All Wheel Control. That gives the car decent handling.  The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine makes 168 horsepower, is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission and the EPA says it's good for 23 city/30 highway, which based on our experience, is within the realm of possibility.

Base price is $22,095, which gets you some niceties, including leather seating surfaces, auto on/off halogen headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

Ours also had the SEL Sun & Sound Package...a power glass sunroof and a nine-speaker, 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system.  That's an extra $1,500.  And that, with $835 for destination and handling, adds up to $24,430.  That's right in the sweet spot for subcompact sedans these days...and that's for cars that don't have all-wheel drive, a 710-watt audio system and a sunroof.

Our verdict remains the same as when we drove the 2016 Lancer SEL AWC back in February:  It's a strong value if you can overlook the basic car's advancing age.
