Commercial Van Sales In Canada - March 2017

Commercial van sales rose 14% in Canada in the first-quarter of 2017, buoyed by a 46% year-over-year increase in sales of the class-leading Ford Transit.

 Through the end of March, the Transit generated three out of every ten full-size commercial van sales in Canada. Together, the Transit, E-Series, and Transit Connect own 42% of Canada's commercial van market.

But big headway has been made in early 2017 by Mercedes-Benz's full-size Sprinter and Ram's full-size ProMaster. Those two vans accounted for 17% of Canadian commercial van sales in 2016's first-quarter; 25% in the same period this eyar.

Large SUV Sales In Canada - March 2017

Canadian sales of full-size SUVs jumped 16% in March 2017, a record-setting March for the industry. After sales of these same seven large SUVs decreased marginally through the first one-sixth of 2017, first-quarter volume ended up rising 5% because of strength in March, led by the Ford Expedition and GM's short-wheelbase large SUVs.

 Combined, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon owned 39% of the market. Combined, the Tahoe, Yukon, and their long-wheelbase siblings owned 60% of the market. Ford's long-wheelbase Expedition's sales figures are included by Ford in the Expedition total.

Nissan also reported a major increase in sales of the Armada, which reported an all-time annual high in Canadian sales last year and is expected to smash that record in 2017.

Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In Canada - March 2017

Canada's 20 best-selling autos – not even the top 30, but just the top 20 – accounted for precisely half of all new vehicle sales in March 2017. 

 Record March sales for the Ford F-Series, Canada's best-selling line of vehicles, along with surges from GM's pickups, huge upticks from some of Canada's most popular cars, and high-flying SUV/crossover sales propelled the industry to the best March results ever.

 Not everyone got in on the fun. Year-over-year, Ram P/U sales slumped 6% in March 2017. The Hyundai Elantra, Canada's fourth-best-selling vehicle in March 2016 but only the 12th-ranked vehicle in March 2017, fell 35%. 

 But of the 30 most popular vehicles in Canada in March, 22 sold more often in 2017 than in the same period of 2016.

Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada - March 2017

Just as it claimed top honours in the United States in March 2017 and in the first-quarter of 2017, the Nissan Rogue was Canada's top-selling SUV in March 2017 and leads the second-ranked Honda CR-V by 16 units through the end of the third month.

 The CR-V, still in short supply at many Honda stores, remains a hot seller. Volume jumped 10% in March 2017 as the industry at large grew 7% to an all-time March high. In fact, all six of the six most popular SUVs and crossovers in Canada – and 15 of the top 20 – sold more often in March 2017 than in March 2016. 

 But it's the Rogue's growth – up 63% in March and 47% in Q1 – that has some wondering if Nissan will not stop at anything to grab Canadian market share. North America's Rogues now come from three factories, and a fourth will bring in a sub-Rogue in a couple of months: it's called the Qashqai. 

Nissan is targeting the heart of the growth market, soon replacing the Juke, adding the Qashqai, producing mega-volume with the Rogue, while also marketing the Murano, Pathfinder, and Armada. 53% of Nissan's Canadian March volume stemmed from utility vehicles.
